Painkiller: Black Edition

Впервые прикоснулся к серии Painkiller, решил попробовать что это, в целом, очень напоминает Serious Sam, но как будто чуть-чуть не дотягивает до Крутого Сэма, если в Крутом Сэме более яркий, контрастный сеттинг, то здесь же более мрачный и на самом деле понятно почему, все-таки наш главный герой попал в Чистилище, где нам предлагают убить генералов Люцифера, после чего нас отправят в Рай. Кстати забавно, но если проходить на самом высоком уровне сложности, то будет всего 4 главы, после чего получите концовку. Если говорить по сеттингу игры, то крайне приятно удивило разнообразие врагов, почти что каждый уровень - новый враг, а уж при смене главы тем более. Очень понравились виды оружий, Коломёт forever. Если говорить по сюжету игры, то "Крещёный кровью" проходится на одном дыхании на сложности "Травма". В сюжетной линии "За пределами Ада" в каждой локации новые враги, что очень приятно удивило, локации интересные, враги также стилизованы под локацию, но я просто жесть как задушился на уровне "Ленинград", где просто хотелось дропнуть игру, разработчики просто перемудрили со сложностью на этом уровне, также блин, Т-34 и танки "Тигр"? Серьезно? + Солдаты СС и советские солдаты, где еще на уровне, при боях, играл гимн СССР. Блин, ну как будто совсем не вписывается в сеттинг + сложность ультра хард. В целом игру советую, но можете крайне задушится не некоторых уровнях, в сюжетной линии "За пределами Ада". Но для полной концовки все-таки стоит пройти эту сюжетную линию.

This game was pretty popular back in the mid 2000s, but a series of shoddy budget sequels (thinly disguised expansions, in reality) pretty much killed long-term good faith towards the series. However, Black Edition is still an amazing time, and is one of the best FPSes of its decade. Great graphics and performance, killer soundtrack, fun arcade/boomer shooter style gameplay all combine to make this a lost gem of the genre.

A quality classic.

This is a neutral review. Painkiller: Black Edition is a surprisingly genuine and entertaining retro FPS title. In my opinion, it's better then Quake and Doom because here you don't have to wonder around looking for the silver and golden keys and silver and golden doors. The maps are not labyrinths, but mostly linear (checkpoints system), which frees you to enjoy the combat more. It has a very thrilling supernatural (horror) atmosphere and interesting levels/locations, situated both in the afterlife (esoteric) world and in the material planet Earth (past and present). The story is minimalistic and oriented to religious fundamentalism but in FPS games the story is a secondary perk anyway, so I didn't mind. Combat is well done, I liked the selection of weapons and the difficulty which is (if you play on normal) not too easy and not too hard. Both the graphics and the sound are very modest but it's understandable since Painkiller is a 2004 game. There is a lot of ammo which for me it's very important to enjoy FPS games properly. The things I didn't like are: 1) you have to install some third-party programs in order to play (GameSpy Arcade), 2) it has some bugs and some times it crashes, 3) almost every boss have a certain mechanic you have to learn in order to beat it, that you cannot possibly know beforehand, 4) sometimes it is not very clear where you have to proceed (there is no mini-map). 5) there are "tarot cards" you can unlock and those cards are basically upgrades, you can collect them and then use 3 golden tarot cards and 2 black tarot cards. The problem is that it's very difficult to unlock them. You have to pass each level in a certain way to unlock the respective card. So the upgrade system is poorly done.

Классный эмбиент и куча прикольного оружия и врагов, но в конце это превращается в терпиловку против 80 дальников 😒
