Great game! Feels nicely polished! I had a blast and would love to see a multiplayer game mode added in the future!
First impressions : fun non stop action. A lot of level, mob ability and boss variety. Not easy either! Steam achievements addition would be good for the future.
pretty fun - but slightly generic - rogue-like. The music slider was bugged and would reset to 100% volume when the track changes. The base movement speed felt a little too slow and some weapons felt like they shouldn't be obtainable as early as they can be (mainly the double/triple rocket and grenade launchers) and cause some early bosses too die what i felt was a little too quickly. The characters are good (however the rabbit is a little too weak without much reward) and are enjoyable to play as. The variety of weapons is solid, from energy rifles to grenade launchers, I like the inclusion of 123 as options for weapon selection instead of only the mousewheel. Nonetheless, the game is enjoyable and a solid indie game. 7/10.
The core idea is very simple and very focused. Each run is built around intense one minute combat arenas where you pick a fighter, jump into action immediately, and try to survive waves of enemies while upgrading your firepower. There is no long setup, no walking around doing nothing, and no unnecessary downtime. You spawn, you move, you shoot, and everything wants you dead almost instantly. The roguelike structure means you die, a lot.You unlock relics, weapons get stronger, and you slowly learn how to read enemy behavior and level flow. What I really like is that the game does not pretend to be something it is not. It knows exactly what kind of experience it wants to deliver, short, intense, and chaotic bursts of action that respect your time.
fun, challenging, and engaging. i really liked special movements and melee attacks of turtle and rabbit.
If you like challenging indie games, Overkill Squad is what you are looking for! Despite being the first game from this studio, it is developed pretty well and professionally, I have not come across any bugs. The strongest aspect of the game is THE MUSIC!! It gets you hyped up in all levels. The character designs are also pretty cool.
I'd say it's a mix of Hotline Miami and Vampire Survivor, with very short levels and cool graphics. It has some issues like much harder boss fight than the previous levels, no time to collect loot from the last enemy you defeat on a level and slow post-level upkeep (when you choose a relic) - but it's worth it at sale.
Pure arcade feel, very fast game, I like it.
Overkill Squad is an indie roguelike action shooter developed and published by Chillfox Games that embraces the spirit of classic arcade chaos. Rather than focusing on narrative or world-building, the game centers almost entirely on high-intensity combat where reflexes, positioning, and quick decision-making determine survival. It presents players with a top-down twin-stick shooter format infused with bullet-hell mechanics, creating a gameplay style that demands constant movement and awareness. Every run places the player inside compact arenas packed with enemies, projectiles, and explosive effects, emphasizing pure action over complex storytelling. The result is a straightforward but energetic experience that feels heavily inspired by the fast-paced arcade games of earlier eras while incorporating modern roguelike progression systems. At the beginning of each run, players choose a character from a roster of fighters, each equipped with their own special abilities and unique combat style. These differences are not merely cosmetic; certain characters may emphasize melee combat, while others focus on ranged damage or mobility. This small layer of variety allows players to experiment with different approaches to combat depending on their preferred playstyle. Once a run begins, the player is immediately thrown into an arena where enemies begin appearing from all directions. There is very little downtime or buildup—Overkill Squad quickly establishes its relentless pace by forcing players into action within seconds. Combat is built around twin-stick controls that allow players to move and aim independently. This system gives players the flexibility to dodge incoming attacks while simultaneously firing at approaching enemies. The arenas quickly fill with projectiles, explosions, and waves of hostile creatures, transforming the battlefield into a chaotic dance of dodging and attacking. Surviving requires both quick reflexes and careful positioning, as even a momentary lapse in attention can result in taking heavy damage. As the action intensifies, the player must weave through increasingly dense patterns of enemy attacks while continuing to eliminate threats before they overwhelm the arena. One of the most important mechanics driving replayability is the roguelike upgrade system. During each run, players can collect relics that provide powerful bonuses or modify the way their character fights. Some relics increase raw damage output, while others enhance movement speed, grant defensive effects, or introduce new attack patterns. The key appeal of this system lies in how relics can combine to create unique builds. Since the relics offered during a run are randomized, each playthrough encourages experimentation as players attempt to assemble combinations that complement their chosen character. This randomness ensures that no two runs feel exactly the same, adding a strategic layer beneath the otherwise frantic combat. As players progress through waves of enemies, they eventually encounter powerful boss battles that serve as major milestones within a run. These bosses present significantly tougher challenges compared to standard enemies, often unleashing complex attack patterns that fill large portions of the screen with projectiles. Unlike regular encounters, these fights require more deliberate strategies and careful timing in order to survive. Learning a boss’s movement patterns and attack sequences becomes essential for victory. Defeating these bosses not only provides a sense of accomplishment but also reinforces the game’s escalating difficulty curve. Visually, Overkill Squad adopts a retro pixel art style that pays homage to classic arcade shooters. The graphics are intentionally simple yet vibrant, with bright explosions, colorful enemies, and animated environments that enhance the sense of frantic action. Each arena is filled with visual effects that highlight the chaos of combat, from flashing bullets to dramatic destruction as enemies are defeated. Although the art style is not technically complex, it works effectively because it prioritizes clarity. In a game where dozens of projectiles may appear on screen simultaneously, readability is crucial, and the pixel art design helps ensure players can quickly identify threats. The soundtrack and audio design complement the fast-paced gameplay with energetic music and impactful sound effects. Gunfire, explosions, and enemy attacks blend together into a constant stream of audio feedback that reinforces the urgency of each battle. The music keeps the tempo high, pushing players to stay engaged with the rapid flow of combat. Combined with the short arena-based structure of each run, the audio helps create a rhythm that makes the game feel like a continuous arcade challenge where every second counts. Despite its strengths, the game’s minimalistic design does come with certain limitations. Because the core gameplay revolves around surviving similar arena battles, the experience can start to feel repetitive after extended sessions. The absence of a story or deeper narrative context may also leave some players wishing for more world-building or long-term progression systems. While the relic system introduces some variation, the overall structure of the game remains largely consistent from one run to the next. However, these limitations also reflect the game’s intended focus. Overkill Squad is clearly designed as a fast, arcade-style action experience where the primary appeal lies in mastering the mechanics and chasing higher scores or more successful runs. Its short session structure makes it particularly well suited for quick bursts of gameplay rather than lengthy play sessions. Players can easily jump into a run, enjoy several minutes of intense action, and then return later for another attempt. Overall, Overkill Squad delivers an energetic and focused roguelike shooter that emphasizes reflex-driven gameplay and explosive combat. Its combination of bullet-hell intensity, randomized upgrades, and retro arcade presentation creates a satisfying experience for players who enjoy fast action and repeated runs. While the game’s simplicity and limited scope prevent it from offering the depth of larger roguelike titles, it succeeds in capturing the addictive thrill of arcade survival shooters. Rating: 7/10
