Outlast 2 introduces you to Sullivan Knoth and his followers, who left our wicked world behind to give birth to Temple Gate, a town, deep in the wilderness and hidden from civilization. Knoth and his flock are preparing for the tribulations of the end of times and you’re right in the thick of it.

I know that this franchise started as a more classic, linear horror game, but in my opinion, Outlast 2 had the potential to take the next step and put more effort into its gameplay. Sadly, it disappointed me in that regard. What I had hoped for was that the more open outdoor areas would give me more freedom in how to sneak through the environment. But no, it doesn't matter which path you take, the experience remains exactly the same. This is not really the fault of the level design itself, but rather due to the enemies' AI. Their behavior is not believable; instead, they act in a way that artificially forces tension and horror. Enemies automatically walk toward your direction even if they haven't seen you yet, but they will never spot you if you are hiding in the dark, even if they stand directly in front of your face. Because of this, picking a safer route is not a viable strategy since the enemies will always converge on your location anyway. There is not even an incentive to search buildings for items, because the only useful resources (batteries and bandages) only spawn when you are running low. As a result, you will never encounter a situation where you actually have to manage your battery usage carefully. After realizing these issues, I just ran straight through the levels, which not only stripped the gameplay of any depth but also made the experience feel more like a walking simulator. On a positive note, and personally the biggest strength of the game, is the setting—especially its presentation. Although Christian themes appear in other video games as well, they are mostly portrayed from a historical perspective. Outlast 2, instead, shows the clash between Christianity's old, traditional mindset and the modern world within a horror setting. This created a highly unique atmosphere that I really enjoyed. However, despite having such a great setting, they completely messed up the story. I personally view mystical narratives that avoid any clear explanation as lazy storytelling. They could have explored how religious traditions affect us as individuals, or whether these traditions still have a place in modern society. But no, none of that appears in the game, which is very unfortunate. After researching the explanation of the story online, it felt even lazier and cheaper. Just like the gameplay, the narrative is a massive case of missed potential. That's why, although Outlast 2's horror is generally okay, I am still super disappointed with the game overall. I really hoped they would do so much more with it, but in the end, it felt just like any other linear horror game. If you are fine with that, you will probably have a great time. But for me personally, Outlast 2 offers nothing special enough to actually recommend it.
