The great battle codenamed 'Operation Zeta' has been lost. Your ship is in shambles and you have to act quickly to collect all of the parts and repair your ship before the warzone is completely destroyed by the enemies death laser in this space rougelike.

This is the SFS Studios most polished and well loved game, and it shows. When it first came to early access I had bad motion sickness with it. I complained to the dev and they made an "reduce motion sickness" option in the options menu! The art is consistent and charming. The gameplay loop is simple and easy to access, controls take some getting used to. The dev regularly streams on Twitch and listens well to the fans.
TL;DR: Operation Zeta is a fun, quirky game with a lot of character and solid replay value borrowing aspects of roguelite genre with a variety of minigames. Pros: - Lots of character and love put into the game, I'm a big fan of the Flaxon Five characters in particular - Several types of characters to select from with different gameplay goals and playstyles - Gravity-based movement and combat is super satisfying after getting used to it - Persistent upgrades across multiple playthroughs adds good replay value for the price Cons: - Takes a run or two to really understand the game loop - Keybinds are a little awkward on keyboard - Minor UX issues that could be improved
A fun little roguelite game with a unique presentation and concept. Your ship has crash landed and you need to find its parts that are scattered about small planets that you hop to and from. You find random powerups laying around, enemies, and NPCs that you do little quests for to find the ship parts. My primary issue with the game is that it doesn't to a great job of explaining itself, but once you figure it out it's great fun. Addictive game loop and properly challenging. Cute pixel graphics, unique setting/characters, fun gameplay. Would recommend giving it a try!
*Received a Streamer Key for this game* Had a lot of fun playing this. The controls are a little wild to get used to at first and if you're prone to motion sickness I'd caution you about this game. But overall the game is great. I played on a pre-release build which had some things that were missing/fixed upon launch, but for a game that has a timer on you to finish quickly it has an amazing amount of replayability. The art/game sounds/themed music for the races all bring me back to the 90s style of gaming that I remember from my younger years. I look forward to updates to this game and recommend it if you're looking for something to fill that roguelike space themed hole in your gaming heart. Some quick tips that I was given/give to you: * Left Trigger on controller stops your ship movement in its tracks (great for getting a handle on the controls as you rocket around the planets) * Be patient with the ship parts not snapping into place immediately * You can technically travel from planet to planet without your ship (Hold up - this also works for "jumping") you just can't bring back ship parts * Don't be afraid to farm upgrades on easier races
For other game reviews, please follow us at What The Game?
Operation Zeta is a novel roguelike, if a bit obtuse and mildly frustrating at the start. At the end of the day, however, it's money well spent for fans of the genre. You are an explorer whose spaceship has been destroyed in a losing battle (the Eponymous Operation Zeta), and you must scramble around the various planets in the sector to collect the pieces of your ship and repair them before the death laser is fired by your enemies, killing you. Since this is a roguelike, you should expect that this is easier said than done. Expect to die frequently until you come to terms with the rules of the world; the game doesn't even attempt to explain anything but the most basic controls. Navigation in your ship can be difficult to really master as the gravitation of planets will definitely affect your ship. The “music” is abysmal, consisting of atonal chiptune bloops and bleeps designed to evoke a sci-fi feel. Thank god you can mute it, because it's one of the most unpleasant noises I've ever heard in my life. The graphics are...acceptable. I'm going to be honest; I really don't care for pixel art here. In many cases it's just a little too low-res to let me know what I'm looking at. This wouldn't be a problem in most cases, except for when there's a fetch quest and you have ABSOLUTELY no idea whether the random shape you're staring at is a rock, or the item you need, or a completely unrelated item. Because, you see, to get the parts you need, you'll have to travel to different planets and do little tasks for various aliens and other beings that you find on them. Not every planet has an NPC, though. Oh, and there's a time limit. It starts out at ten minutes until certain death, though there's ways to extend this limit. Sometimes it's a fetch quest – if you're lucky, the item is on the planet you're at. Otherwise, good luck finding it. Sometimes it's a weird minigame. Sometimes, it's a kill quest. Pray it's not a kill quest; the combat is...not great, at least starting out. There's a lot to unlock, in terms of lore and playable characters, which is nice. And there's plenty of upgrades. And honestly, even though I've said a couple negatives about the game, there's a “one more run” hook here. The gameplay loop is generally fun, though it's very RNG dependent. You're also going to get more mileage out of the game if you enjoy the humor. If you don't like the general tone of the NPC's, you probably will not enjoy the game as much. This game is definitely not for everyone. If you've never played a roguelike, I wouldn't suggest starting here. But if they're your jam, this one is worth your time.
Operation Zeta is a breath of fresh air amidst an indie market riddled with games that, frankly, all have the same formula. SFS Studios wasn't afraid to break free of the norm and explore some interesting territory that I believe has the potential to bridge the gap between Terraria and No Man's Sky. Most importantly, SFS is open to constructive criticism which already gives them a leg up in terms of customer satisfaction. Be patient, give this game the love it deserves, and I have no doubt that we will witness it become greater and greater. I plan to come back and update this comment once I play more, but I spent the last ten minutes losing track of the goal and just enjoying jumping around and having fun with the gravity system. That alone will be worth the cost of the game, and I look forward to seeing where it goes from here. Also, the developer is known for being extremely active in the company Discord and being very accepting of any and all feedback and suggestions. I would highly recommend anyone who plays it to jump in, its a great community.
Fun game! The physics are slightly confusing at first, but once you figure out how to navigate around in space the controls feel quite smooth and rewarding. I also like the art style and the music. Looking forward for more content updates and certainly will return to this game!
After playing this game for just over half an hour it's charm is immediately apparent. It took a few minutes before I really understood exactly what it was I was doing, but once I did I found myself trying having a blast just flying around the map. The controls are a little difficult to grasp (considering how crazy the gravity can get) which can lead to things getting really out of control really quickly, but I never felt like that really affected my enjoyment of the game sometimes even made the experience more fun. I'm looking forward to putting more hours into this cute game.
