I'm an avid player of Dungeon Crawler games and Operation Babel is great fun, specially because it allows you to mix a Main class with a Sub class (their spells, skills etc.). The first game, Operation Abyss (which actually contains 2 older games together) doesn't have such a class system (you only have one main class and changing class does not benefit you in any meaningful way) For these reasons alone, Babel is far better, even though I also finished Abyss and recommend both to more dedicated Dungeon Crawler players like me. :-) Babel also has better interface and an even faster option for battles, which makes grinding easier (and it'll be necessary if you want to do all post-game content) and keeps your last chosen battle commands.
So far, so good. I love Operation Abyss and am very happy this sequel got a lot of QOL updates. I really liked the dual class (blood code) option, and changing the class doesn't limit how many class you can change like Stranger Sword City does so happy I can test stuff out rather than having to stress and prepare myself from the start like Sosc. A small thing that surprised me with this game is that the start of this game actually detected your saves from Operation Abyss. The two guys in Alice's party at the start of the game are my old comrades! Wow, small things but a very nice addition. (it seems only work if you play classic mode I think) game has only one bug for me so far, There's seem a random crash problem with this game if you alt+tab will update again later
Immediately better and more interesting than Operation Abyss Still has a lot of the annoying support cast and stupid VN content, but, at least so far in the game, the story doesn't require you to know anything, despite appearing to occur within a year of the previous game, it's just orientation Not really a vet of the DRPG/blobber genre, but I almost feel like I just have to recommend this one because of how it almost invalidates Abyss even existing The only things that are worse 1) No English VA (not a huge issue, just back step) 2) Item names are translated like this is an NES/SNES era game where you had string length limitations, Abyss has Long Swords, Babel has Ln Swrds

A bit of a mixed bag after Operation Abyss. Overall, this game is a definite improvement, especially in anything related to the actual development studio. The mechanics, dungeon design, encounter and enemy design, classes, and so on are all head and shoulders above those in Operation Abyss. The writing is also quite a bit better, and the story doesn't have the weird nationalist tones of the first game, even if it's all just weird science-fantasy nonsense that you probably shouldn't spend time thinking about or trying to figure out. On the other hand, the translation and PC port are a mess, with a bunch of little bugs and translation errors, like Legs being consistently mistranslated as Wegs. I have to assume the localizer saw that Operation Abyss didn't do great and decided to cut their losses and really phone in the translation and port on this, because those aspects of Abyss were much better. Overall, if you enjoy Wizardry style dungeon crawlers and JRPG nonsense stories, it's a good game to pick up, despite the problems.
Operation Babel: New Tokyo Legacy is a classic, numbers-heavy dungeon crawler that leans hard into methodical exploration and party management. If you like mapping corridors, testing formations, and building a team around synergies rather than reflexes, it delivers exactly that flavor. It’s not trying to be flashy; it’s trying to be deep and deliberate. For the right audience, that focus is a strength. The main loop is straightforward: push into a dungeon, gather resources, learn enemy patterns, and retreat to prepare for the next run. Party building is where the game really lives, with plenty of room to experiment with roles, skills, and equipment. Progress feels earned because small upgrades meaningfully change how safe (or risky) your routes become. When the systems click, it’s satisfying in a very old-school way. Difficulty is the defining trait, and it can be unforgiving if you rush or ignore status effects and resistances. Some fights punish sloppy setups, and certain encounters can feel like a wall until you adjust tactics or grind a bit. The game rewards caution—scouting, stocking items, and knowing when to retreat—more than stubborn brute force. That tension is engaging, but it can also be tiring if you’re not in the mood for repeated attempts. The “New Tokyo” sci-fi tone gives the story and missions a distinct identity, even if the narrative pacing can feel uneven. I liked the sense of being part of an organized operation, with objectives that push you deeper into increasingly hostile spaces. Characters and dialogue do their job, but the plot isn’t the main hook; it’s more of a framework for the crawling. You’ll get more out of it if you treat story beats as breaks between long stretches of planning and battling. Presentation is functional and atmospheric rather than spectacular. The art style supports the grim, clinical dungeon vibe, and enemy designs help communicate threats without needing constant exposition. Music and sound do a good job reinforcing tension, though tracks can blur together during long sessions. The interface can take a little time to learn, but once you adapt, it becomes more about routines and efficiency. Quality-of-life is decent for a genre that often feels archaic, but it still expects patience. Inventory and progression management can become a game within the game, and you’ll spend time in menus fine-tuning builds. Replay value largely comes from trying different party compositions and optimizing routes, not from branching story paths. If you enjoy tinkering, that’s a plus; if you want a streamlined adventure, it may feel slow. Overall, Operation Babel: New Tokyo Legacy is best for fans of hardcore dungeon RPGs who enjoy careful planning, incremental growth, and tough fights. It’s rewarding when you engage with its systems, but it won’t win over players who dislike grind, high stakes, or frequent backtracking. I’d recommend it to genre veterans and anyone craving a demanding, methodical crawl. Everyone else should consider watching some gameplay first to be sure the pace and difficulty match what you want.
To much story, more like a VN than a game. played 3 hours and only got 2 very short dungeon runs in. I cannot recommend it for game-plays sake. IF you are into storied games, with long, pointless, other than for story filler, side-quests. This may be up your alley. It thankfully does have a skip key, which I used a lot and still in 3 hours, 2 dungeons.
