I recommend getting this game exclusively when it's on sale and only if you've already played all the other Etrian Odyssey games so as to not get a wrong impression of the series as a whole. This was one of the most obnoxious gaming experiences I've had in a while, and I'm frankly baffled by the fact that they even made another entry after whatever this was. I know the series gets much better after this, so I would say EO2HD is nothing more or less than a fascinating piece of gaming history that you should absolutely stay away from if you like dungeon crawlers. I have all achievements in this game because of a persistent hyperfixation, but trust me, I stopped liking this game well before I reached the postgame.
The worst of the Etrian Odyssey games, but a pretty solid entry nevertheless. The story is the weakest part and it has many classes that were significantly nerfed from the first game. If you're willing to play with the newer classes, deal with some annoying bugs, and you want to see the continuation of the EO story I definitely recommend giving it a shot. Just keep in mind the third game is a huge step up from this entry.
EO I, II, and III are all cheaper (basically just over a dollar each) on key sites, btw. All thanks to Humble Bundle!!! [strike] Not a sponsored review [/strike]
This is an ancient, 18 year old Nintendo DS game remake, ported to PC from the Nintendo Switch, and obviously because it's a handheld game is not a great PC gaming experience. It's a dumbed down JRPG, a lightweight ripoff of far better dungeon crawling party RPGs like Might & Magic and Eye of the Beholder but without any of the charm, gritty sword & sorcery vibes, and much weaker plot, smaller, repetitive dungeons... it's a yawnfest. That's what you get when you dilute and weaken a game genre so it's acceptable for childrens handheld gaming appliances. On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution, so at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. Unfortunately there's a number of other technical defects and shortcomings which contribute to the game being difficult to recommend to gamers. Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC. Due to the age of this game, and the lack of modernisation, the graphics appear quite dated. This compares poorly to more contemporary games with professional standards. Given that gaming is primarily a visual medium, this is a bit of a problem, so should be taken into account when considering whether to get this game. These flaws make this game fall far short of the professional standards we expect from a modern PC game. You're forced to sign a highly questionable yet legally unenforceable End User License Agreement... for such a relatively low effort, low quality game this comes across more as a delusion of grandeur than anything else. This agreement includes questionable requirements that may attempt to revoke consumer law protections that gamers expect to have, which is also highly problematic. Developers must learn they are here to serve gamers, not control them. I had my cat walk over the keyboard while the EULA was displaying, which fixed that problem for me. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 140,000+ games on Steam? Etrian Odyssey II HD has the total ripoff price of $40 USD, for which you could easily get any number of recent AAA games. Fourty bucks for an 18 year old Nintendo DS game! How is this not a cash grab??? There's enough defects and quality problems with this game that it's really impossible to recommend to gamers. The pricing is an insult. You can get ALL the Might & Magic AND Eye of the Beholder games for the same price as this single Nintendo DS game!
