Reviews
Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA) as made by the creator of Gunman Clive.
First Review :) :) :) +The feeling of picking up objects & throwing them is PERFECT! +The game difficulty is fair -The developer is NEVER present on the boards. ( and I don't expect this to change. )
The same way i felt in love with Gunman Clive years ago, Onion Assault has all the qualities of great game's design: Beautiful Art, Impeccable Gameplay and varied and imaginative Level Design. As always Bertil created an Amazing Hidden Gem that deserves to sit next to the great indie dev's masterpieces out there and I really hope that one day he gets the recognition that he deserve honestly. Simply INCREDIBLE!!! Loved it!! 10 out of 10 I'm already recommending it to everyone I know!! If you're still reading, what are you waiting for?!
Not only the gameplay is perfectly polished and fantastically well thought out, but this inspired by 90's cartoon style is something what we haven't seen in a long time. This game is definitely going to be one of the greats in 2D platmormers games. I recommend supporting these developers not only for this amazing game but for the many more to come.
I'm only an hour in to the game so I'll just be sharing my first impressions! Onion Assault is a side-scrolling platformer where the primary way to defeat enemies is by pulling Onions from the ground, and then throwing said Onions at your foes. It's a very simple premise, and the execution is great. It controls well, the music is catchy, the level design is tight, and the visuals are stylistically simple and easy on the eye. I heard about this game in an article by Nintendo Life 2 months ago, and was pleasantly surprised to hear of a title that's primary "gimmick" was directly inspired by the American version of Super Mario Bros 2. Most developers would stick to the standard Mario formula, so it's nice to see Hörberg Productions stepping outside of the norm! The only complaint I have is that I can't seem to remap Controller buttons in-game (must be done with Steam menus). Keyboard controls are mappable though! If you end up liking this game, I'd also recommend checking out Hörberg Productions' Gunman Clive 1 & 2. They're extremely cheap side-scrolling shooters :) (Also, I purchased this game hoping to play it on my Steam Deck, but unfortunately it gives me an error on launch no matter what version of Proton I use. If anybody has a solution, please feel free to share!)
As someone who has wanted a true sequel to Super Mario Bros. 2 forever, I greatly appreciate Onion Assault. It scratches that itch. Play it.
Onion Assault can best be described as "A less interesting Super Mario Bros 2 (USA)." The level themes are less interesting, the platforming is more Mario 1 than 2, the enemies are less interesting, and while there are 2 characters to pick from, they both play the same. For its price, it's perfectly playable and if all you want is a Mario 2-type game on steam, then that would normally be enough to recommend this game, but it has problems. Small problems, but they add up. -Few checkpoints in levels and the game never says where the checkpoints are. -The run button shares space with the throw button, so unless you start running and never stop, you can't run while carrying an object. Since running makes you jump further, this system is awkward. NES Mario had this as well, but back then, the controller had only 2 buttons. Onion Assault came out in 2023, when controllers should have more buttons. -Each level has three onion tokens to find, but the game never told me what they do, which seems like a waste of a collectible. -This game has a life system, which is always a bad idea in a modern game, and the coins are mainly used for gaining more levels. -Lastly, the title screen only shows "Start" and no options or leave game buttons. They are there, but invisible! This can be patched, but it's an oversight that should have been caught way sooner. This game isn't awful and if you want more platformers like Super Mario Bros 2 (USA), it's certainly that. I just wish it didn't carry the same problems from 1988.

If you've played other Hörberg Productions games, you know what you're getting: a game that updates a classic 2D game formula with nice 3D graphics, challenging (but generally fair) level design, and a protagonist who makes up for their lack of a shirt with bulging biceps, among other things 👀 It's great, retro fun. It doesn't run on Linux via Proton (so no Steam Deck), but runs nicely on my Windows PC.
