13-year-old Janis has "Magic Deficiency Disorder," a madness where one can't use magic in a very magic-oriented world. For her protection, she lives in a madhouse: a place where those with mental disorders can be safe from an unforgiving society.

One Small Fire At A Time is a Visual Novel about a teenager forced to live in the madhouse of a magical society. It is the prequel to "An Octave Higher' but OSFaaT is a good stand-alone story. Beat it and used a guide for additional routes in 7.3 hours using a keyboard. Difficulty is Easy (it's a visual novel). Giving this a PG-13 label for violence in the later chapters, depression, bullying, and suicidal themes in one route. - The over-arching story is good, if not a bit dark. There are some weird twists and turns. Otherwise it sticks to a detective/mystery theme that'll keep you entertained. There are a lot of smaller parts that you should pay attention to first-run because the whole puzzle of a story wont make sense without all the pieces in it; This isn't the kind of game you can browse loosely only halfway paying attention to what's going on. - The characters are all unique and colorful. Some have vaguely faded or discolored outlines compared to others for no reason (Candela and Joff compared to Colton and Aidan, for example). Nothing big or mind-blowing. Just something that I noticed at random. - Unlike other VN's I've played through steam, this one relies on Enter instead of Space to advance text. Once again, nothing big here. Hitting space just shows you the main art and characters underneath the text. - You can fastforward through text you've already read and make text appear instantly. This is godly when it comes to going for the other routes. Fastforwarding can be done with F, and hitting Enter will break the flow if you want to read a specific scene mid-way through. - There is 1 True Ending and 3 Alt Endings. - There are 15 chapters total. One Small Fire At A Time is a good, short VN for those who like mysteries, VNs, and teenage angst. There are many twists and turns in the plot that kept me guessing what'd happen next and I was eager to play all the routes, which were entertaining for all but one (that I used FF on a lot). If you feel depressed or have suicidal thoughts, I do not recommend going for the alt endings and only aiming for the 'True Ending', or not playing this game at all.
Janis is 13 years old and lives in a madhouse. This place is where society sends those with mental disorders, such as Schizophrenia, depression, personality disorders, and in Janis’s case, a lack of magic in a magical society. This story has multiple endings with one true ending, leading to its prequel An Octave Higher. One small fire at a time is definitely a hidden gem. You can tell a ton of work and love has been put into it, with all the detailed character sprites, backgrounds and designs. It goes on sale more often than not and it’s worth a read. (3-7 hours) This story has multiple endings with one true ending, leading to its prequel An Octave Higher.
https://youtu.be/sqBnQpGZD4M Leaning heavily on mental health issues as cudgel to base the narrative around makes for a story that starts off on the wrong foot and struggles to recover.
meh, got bored and didnt even finish 2/10 play time is from card farming
https://store.steampowered.com/app/352780/An_Octave_Higher/
I can't tell you how much better this VN is than An Octave Higher was. I went for the true ending first, and I was gripped from the second chapter on. The twists, the turns, the comedy, the drama, the mystery, this story literally had it all. A certain amount of my enthusiasm could be coming from the fact that I suffer from a few neurological disorders myself, so I found this story (very thoughtfully focused on the treatment of people with such disorders) and some of its characters to be quite relatable. But regardless, this has to be one of the best VNs on Steam! I do think I enjoyed this game more than I otherwise would have because I had played AOH first, so if you can slog through it, I do recommend playing AOH first. Rest assured, OSFaaT will be way better. There's only one really cringey part (near the beginning) and the rest of it flows magnificently. Since the protagonist is a child, turning 13 during the game, there are no romance options or dating elements to worry about, all the relationships are merely friendships. And the best part is, no Frederic, because this story takes place 5 years before he was born! If there is anything I can say I really didn't like about the game, it's that I wish the character Alanis Blyton had a larger role. Granted, she played an important supporting role in both this game and AOH, but her appearance here was even more brief than before, and she was one of my favorite characters in both stories. A couple warnings, just so you know what you're getting into. I would not let children under at least 13 play this game, maybe older. From chapter 10 on, the game starts to get into some images and scenarios that might be scary or disturbing to young children, due to the mystery/crime elements of the story, but it's not bad. I'm way too squeamish to watch any horror movies myself, and I was totally fine. Also, one of the alternate endings, "Untainted", is very sad and depressing, much more so than anything in AOH. If you struggle at all with depression or being suicidal or anything like that, definitely just click through that one without reading it, or just don't go that route. And whatever you do, pay attention to everything you read, especially on the true ending route! If you get the whole experience of this game on that route, the whole story is an interconnected web of plot. Several times throughout my first playthrough, I read things that I thought were just minor little funny things, only to reach a point later and go, "Oh, that's right! I remember that!" 9.5/10 Will read again!
If you like previous game "Octave Higher" this is a good sequel. If you are first time of this series, it'll be fine because it's just small easter eggs from previous game and still a good VN game that has multiple endings, depends on how you behave.
beautiful made VN!
This visual novel is a hidden gem. While it has a fascinating central mystery and engaging characters, it is this VN's social commentary that makes it so good. Everyone in this world can use magic - apart from the MC, who is considered insane and disabled in this setting, even though she would perfectly normal in our world. In other words, disability and insanity aren't objective labels - they are social constructions that shift depending on society. It gets the message across with an entertaining story and I think it actually makes it an excellent work.
