There is an in-game plaque that commemorates Italian soldiers that died on the Russian front in 1943. Which is to say the game commemorates fascist soldiers that died while attempting genocide of Slavic people in eastern Europe. In light of that plaque, some of the game's other odd choices start to nag, such as a police officer who is described as threatening to beat someone up at least once per day and also being a good person at heart, the game's currency being lira in a time of casual mobile phone ownership, and the town being so isolated that even seeing another Italian is a novelty. The game starts to feel less like a holiday and more like love bombing for reactionary Italian nationalism. To be clear, I am not asking the game to become serious. The devs chose to bring up police brutality as a cute character trait. The devs chose to put in a plaque commemorating genocidal fascists. What place do these have in a cute relaxing holiday game? --- Also, the game is quite unpolished. The camera jerks every time you exit chronovision. Riddles aren't localized so a lot of them just say stuff to the effect of "what is the correct pun in Italian". Textbox timing feels off, and character animations are jerkily transitioned between in dialog. Mysteries also seem easier to brute force than to try to understand the situation presented or the authors' intent.
I think I honestly regret having ever played this game, I'm so disappointed. The art style is pretty good and music is nice. The story is bad, I dislike it a lot. It started off fine, in fact I liked the first half, it was interesting. But by the second half it introduced
magic
which it then quickly
debunks
with what one character says, only to then bring it back and actually it was that the whole time, which honestly I would have preferred it stay out of that, but I guess I did predict it from the beginning along with the one clue when you get to the town, so in the end I guess it's more about preference and all, so I'm a little neutral on that. But the ending, the
twist, or second twist I guess
, the worst part of that reveal was the fact it never explained why they did some stuff like for example
frame me, or ask me to solve who the thief was, WHY DO THAT? It achieved nothing, not even as a distraction for the residents to focus on me instead of them.
and then as you do the last diorama, the fact that
Moira appears, teleported from the past, felt like such a slap in the face. That was ACTUALLY so insulting it's insane, you're telling me she's there and we could have rescued her, but instead she gets blasted back to that blazing inferno
, so terrible, literally such a huge insult, the story decided to go in a goofy way, but it couldn't even COMMIT to the path it chose, couldn't even remain consistent in that. It would have been it's own version of charming had it been, and I would have been looking at it with a much more favourable lens, even if I came in thinking it was going to be
a much less supernatural mystery
. On top of that however, is the fact that they fail.
The whole point was to break the spell, the only reason the undo spell went wrong is because they were missing an item, an item that Orlando has, and you're telling me they didn't try again this time with all hands on deck to finally destroy the time freeze spell?
Makes the story look like such a joke. Not ONE attempt at all, and then you're told you
can't come back. Be so for real. Maybe if they destroyed the spell, which they can, then I COULD.
The worst part is this is definitely the worst way to end it,
The whole town is basically trapped on what will soon be hell, a decade or so, maybe you can handle it, but an ETERNITY frozen in the same day? Thousands, millions of years? How long until they go insane? Or are their memories going to continously be lost? And doesn't this mean that Chea's REAL parents are out there wondering what happened to her? That's so depressing.
HUGE disappointment, which is SUCH a shame because I really wanted to like it but... I just can't. Such a terrible ending. The characters are cool, at least some of them, my favourite has to be
Veronica
for sure. The main protagonist was also a bit of a disappointment, I mean you get the reveal of
that the 5 year old is now a grown woman and has not much of a reaction, and then she reads a diary entry (of stuff that we already knew given the stuff I just said) and has a much bigger shocked reaction? It's insane.
I almost wanted to play as someone else instead of her a few rare times. The gameplay is cool, it's one of the good things of this game, there's so much to do, so many people to talk to and a few to hang out with, with so many different minigames and things to do. It's quite cool. Especially when I kept finding new things that were minigames. Another cool thing would be all the stuff you can buy, it's a small thing but it's neat. Most of the other minigames were cool but the interrogations were kinda meh. Being able to pilot a boat was pretty cool, I liked that I could do that. One thing that I didn't like was when I kept needing to go (or remembered that I needed to check something) on the other side of the map, walking is a pain, stuff always felt far. Looking back, it probably didn't take that long to reach, just a while longer than usual, but still, it felt bad. Another thing that was bad was the low sensitivity when you're in the chronolens or camera mode, it felt HORRIBLE to turn, and as far as I saw there was no options to change that, so you were stuck with it. For the bad, besides anything stated above, there was SO many issues I had, I'm not sure if it's because I played on linux or what, but a list of them would be: [olist] [*] GPU utilization was at 100% all the time above 120 fps, the problem here is if you alt tab it then caused a guaranteed freeze and you'd need to restart the game. I wonder if it's just bad optimization or what. At or below 120 fps it was ok. [*] Worse yet is options don't get remembered for future sessions and you have to set them back and forth to have them apply again as they still show being on the previous selection. [*] The camera was bad. Changing it from the default cinematic into standard makes it better, but there should be an option to stop the camera from moving when you move so that it only moves when you use the mouse for example. [*] Some of the buttons in some minigames didn't register, or just didn't work well. Some examples I can think of are that the cooking minigame became harder to control because of it, and the fast forward in most diorama segments didn't work for some reason, except later it did? I don't know if that was me or what. [*] Alt tabbing makes your mouse not locked to the game window, if you have multiple monitors it means clicking on stuff you don't want and also making the camera not move until the mouse is back. To fix it I had to open the menu or the objectives list twice or there was alt tabbing out to then click on the game in the taskbar, which would then guarantee the mouse would indeed be locked to the game window. (might just be me) [*] I've noticed a few typos. [*] Every time you switched areas the game would stutter quite badly. [*] Visual bugs with the cards, like when talking to some people the card with the art and stuff that would be the next objective to talk about would be blank, the normal talk cards would be fine, just specifically some mission objective talk cards or however you call them. [*] Another visual bug would be (at least I think it's a bug?) that when a card get's updated it would appear in the top right but completely blank, I don't remember if there's more visual bugs. [*] The game has also crashed on me a few times. [*] Sometimes when trying to turn in the chronolens mode the camera would flip out and go crazy, I don't even know how that happened. [*] Bought the swimsuit from the fortune teller, next time I went to her it said it wasn't sold (but I still had it), I never tried rebuying it but that has to be a bug. [*] After the
Accused
arc, when you're in your room, I noticed the TV was missing, after sleeping it returned. [/olist] Another thing to note is that some parts of the setting seemed odd, stuff that usually is there to block cars is for some reason seen in a place where no car would ever get to, as this is very much a walking city only. Overall, I really wanted to like this game in the beginning, so it's quite sad that it turned into such a huge disappointment, I really disliked the story, it was bad, or at least how it handled things and how the second half turned out, especially the ending. The gameplay was one of the few good things about it with its many minigames. Do be wary however that this may be quite the very buggy mess (assuming it's not just me). I don't know if you should get this, once again the story, or especially/specifically that ending section was so awful... As stated in the first line, I think I honestly regret ever playing this game. So depressing, I wanted to like this game so much.
This game is trying to be too many things and kind of fails to juggle them all held together by a story that just feels off in the third act. I wanted to like this game, see it through to the end and got confused and frustrated. In theory, this is trying to be a small Italian town on the coast where you can live and have a calming vacation. That this game is somewhere between OK and great at. It makes almost every house have a character, someone you can meet, talk to and have little stories with if you do side content. That half of the game also has random minigames that range in quality. A few characters have bonds you can work on which require you to check off doing things on a checklist with them, which is fine but kind of feels out of nowhere sometimes. Like, if they suggested it that would be one thing, but half of them are just in your mission log so that's how you know to do it. The camera bugs me, along with the character running a bit slow. The story has fast travel sometimes which makes it feel worse because it's so slow otherwise to walk all over the place. Like, it shows you how this could be but nope. Something isn't matched with the mysteries either. You collect clues to assemble the order of events. In theory, I like this. It is like running a simulation to see what happens when you put things in a different order. In practice, some clues have wildly different results from what you might expect. There is a lot of detective work that just gets glossed over where the clues you find often are so much more open to interpretation. By the end of the game, this system is used for things that are not mysteries and make the whole system guess and check. It isn't really detective work. The interrogation system feels like it also is a half baked card game that maybe could have been used more. By the end though, the story gets off the rails and not in a good way. I love how layton games go weird near the end, this one... It felt at odds with the cozy town. I like the characters, I like the town. I wish I liked the mystery stuff going on because there is good here, but not good too.
On Your Tail is a phenomenal game. There's so much to do and see in the game, and I'm genuinely floored how fun all of it is (except Marble Race 3, bane of my existence). Borgo Marina truly left me charmed and a lot of these characters are going to live in my head for a long time, and the optional activities and side content do a wonderful job of fleshing things out. You certainly don't need to do the optional content as the core storyline is really wonderful, though it could have used some room to breathe and examine itself towards the end. The investigations are all fun, the chronolens is genuinely such a banger concept. I have nothing but good to say about the puzzles which is funny because they were what I was initially most skeptical about. They were genuinely a joy to solve, even when they seemed overwhelming at first (the ice cream puzzle was my favorite and it isn't even close!). There are some "rough" edges to the game, though I really hesitate to use such a strong word. A few dialogue cards didn't have art and some achievements had slightly incorrect triggers, but the biggest "issue" is definitely that saving is a little inconsistent. As long as you sleep or complete a quest of some kind, progress seems to save consistently, but outside of that it can be a crapshoot, so I recommend sleeping whenever you want to close the game. I had an issue where I got the high score in the arcade, saved, and when I returned found my progress undone. Slight bummer, but basically anything important forces a real save, so not an issue in normal gameplay but thought I'd mention it. Worth full price, and honestly probably worth even more. I'll definitely be picking up the ost and artbook and will be keeping a really close eye on the future of this studio. Really cool to see a studio from Torino make something this awesome. Grazzi from a Sicilian brother :)
The positives - * The graphics are really good, and the village is enough of a maze to be fun without being annoying. * There are a lot of options in how and when you progress, so no enforced linear flow. This really helps with the "Im on holiday in italy" immersion. * The cards-based deduction games are a good idea. * The puzzles are not so complex that they annoy and prevent progress * There are a *lot* more side quests than you initially realise, including 4 romance routes. The negatives - * There is a bug in shops which make them run really, really, slowly. There is also an occasional issue with running between areas. * Dialogue options are pretty limited * Some actions (cooking, watching a movie) force the day to end, which is annoying * The clothes options for Diana do not include any skirts or dresses. I want to look (even more) cute for the date with Paun, maybe then he will .. * I can find no way to get Diana to kiss Paun after a date. They can even sit on the bed together and she thinks "hmm what to do?" but "Make out with Paun" is not an option, for some reason. C'mon, our girl needs smoochies! * Sometimes the puzzle solution can be a bit obscure, or require you to stand in a very specific place, which is not always clear from the instructions. e.g. Fish, photo of Corso Gattibaldi etc Despite there being more negatives in the list above, I do find the game lots of fun and very relaxing. I can just wander about and explore or drive the boat about the bay, skip stones, and go swimming. Recommended for a cosy relaxing game, as long as you don't let yourself get invested in Diana's love life...
Really enjoyed the story, interactions and scenery. Ending left me torn and hoping they'll add more to answer questions that felt not addressed and just more interactions with the town. Enjoyed: • Deduction minigame seeing how the cards played out figuring out the order. Even if it started to get sluggish near end with how long they were getting. • How expressive everyone could be both in the conversation portrait and the models themselves. • The various responses that could happen with each person, including if someone was following along with you. • The variety of minigames and side objectives. Was fun painting, waitressing, delivering mail and having tidbits of side dialogue with the community of Borgo Marina. • Joker cards, a nice way to be like "This is getting frustrating, I just wanna move on" Struggled: • Interrogation minigame despite it's lengthy tutorial, felt like it really didn't explain it. Probably didn't help the first one you get gives you like 7 cards and you only have 4 fails to kind of grasp how it works, and I felt it didn't really have a proper conversation during it. • Chea's bag puzzles, I really liked them because they really make you think, but I truly felt after the third one it became difficult to understand how the solutions I had were incorrect. Maybe the clue just needed an extra sentence or something to be worded differently. • Stargazing, honestly I thought it was a fun puzzle. I just truly do believe it needs a zoom out option. Quite a few of them I thought I had it, but it was incorrect, a mixture of unable to gauge the distance between the stars or if it really matched the shape. • Constellations and Fish, I think the collection system giving some information or a hint where these were located would of been helpful. • A few minigames, like cooking and the harvesting, they weren't too difficult it's just they randomly would need multiple fast reaction inputs in a small window. • Travelling around, while some quests having fast travel back to the original location is nice. I do wish the boat was always present at the train station along with your vispa so you could use them as a way to get across the map faster Bugs I encountered: • Audio ignoring settings in main menu • Some dialogue cards with characters being blank, but they still played and everything else played out fine. • Day not resetting after character sleeping. Think it was it turned night from hanging out with a friend, advanced their quest and it had the character sleep but not actually advance the day despite being daytime again. Was an easy fix to just sleep again and restart game. • Areas starting to not render, think it was related to watching 3 movies back to back with someone than sleeping. Changing the scene would fix it just objects started becoming invisible.
Sehr nettes Cozy game
This has be a truly amazing game to play. A mix of playing a buddy detective / writer, building amazing relationships, and a absolutely awesome storyline. I genuinely felt like I was part of the story, and as it progressed, I started to get attached to all of the characters, with their own unique traits and storylines. Honestly, I nearly cried at the end! Its a beautiful game, and I feel privileged to play it. I really, really hope there'll be a On Your Tail 2, in the future. 5/5 ⭐
