Having learned deep games that look like arse such as Dwarf Fortress I can absolutely see the appeal.
Quirky niche titles, my favourite. When they work, that is. And this one doesn't. For no obvious reason all the sounds in the game are completely broken for me; the music and all SFX have this grainy interference noise to them as if my headphones' cable has interference, yet nothing else on my PC is affected at all. It's blatant and painful on the ears, and I think I'm being reasonable in saying I don't want to play a mute game just because it's broken. Vsync wouldn't fix it, there were no sound quality settings, so who knows, all I know is that 100% of all audio sources were broken and unbearable. I even found the music folder and could hear all the music files just fine, so it's an engine-level problem. Every time I click a button, the game becomes a 0/10 experience. To get to the minimum time to review a game I decided to at least hop in to see the gameplay. I'm not going to critique it from lack of understanding, I'm aware I've not done the tutorials. My main critique here is...why the square maps? I look at it and don't feel like I'm on any particular front, it's just a generic square map in the middle of a "WW1-ish" place. I can tolerate hearts of iron 2 and 3, I can tolerate Supreme Ruler, even Strategic Command. At least I felt like I was fighting in the theatre of war it claims I'm in on those games. I have to refund simply over the fact the entire audio system is unusable, coupled with the fact it was constantly blackscreening me like it was trying to change to sub-native resolutions when I fullscreen'd it. I would have liked to try and give this game a chance, because niche games like this do always have an awkward learning phase, but the technical challenges immediately force me to not even go that far with it. I'll put my specs here in-case someone thinks I've thrown a 2006 budget PC at the thing: Windows 11, i7-12700k, 64GB DDR4, RTX 5090 Game is on an M.2 SSD

I really wanted to like this because I love war gaming with chits, but returned due to the game missing fundamental programming. For instance, with camera movement, wasd is not smooth and skips over the map, and there is no mouse side of screen movement, and the middle mouse button requires flicking across the screen to move which is like so... annoying. Then, the resolution of the map is incredibly low and uses a square grid instead of hex. Returned due to low quality map, lack of detail and info on the chits, e.g. opening another window to view instead displaying on the chits, it's painful to just zoom and select units to move around and fight. I also have to compare this to Advanced Squad Leader on VASL. The chits on this game are very basic and when you select stacks it just opens other window. You can't drag and drop for movement, which seems like the first thing you'd program in for ease of use with micromanaging mass units. Size of map and number of units fielded felt underwhelming. There is no overlay chits/tokens used for firing or being pinned or breaking units, and the chits have no detailed information, instead using another window that opens. And the game auto pauses whenever you're doing logistics. There's a lot of advanced stuff in the game like unit readiness, moral, food/water, that use a percentage system. But why not just overlay a token or have info on the chits change when the unit is not ready or their moral is broken. System seems like it'd work so much better simplified down. I'd just have scrapped all the moral and readiness and food to focus on the chain of command and the messenger system which I find really cool that you tried to implement this. It'd be cool if a messenger chit was visibly sent from HQ to relay a message to the company commander which needs to be in range of the platoons to issue orders. Seeing a messenger chit try to sprint across the trenches to relay an order and get shot and having to send another messenger would be cool. But what is in the game, pulling units back and out of the trenches to drill to maintain readiness is tedious and kinda lame o. Unit readiness should be based on recruiting or bringing more units onto the field and less focus on maintenance.
this is a 1 of a kind game. its an absolute passion project unlike anything ive seen in a developer. the game is far from perfect. but its just so amazing how much work and effort this man has put into this project. ive always wanted a game like this and now i got it. i may have no clue how half the mechanics work yet. hopefully with more time we get a more fleshed out and detailed tutorial system covering all the mechanics. if you have a spare 10 bucks and a passion for the history of the great war then this is a must buy just to support this great developer. side note- maybe make a sandbox mode where we can unlock all the upgrades just so we can try out stuff without having to actually be good at the game lol.
Way to confusing cant place hospitals kitchens or dugouts, troops, can only place trenches, comm trenches, and artillary pits. No instructions on anything at all and controls are vauge you need a better help section too as it doesnt tell squat apart form what structures do and where to place them but thats it i press the "L" key go click the place i want to place my structure and nothing happens if you right click it pulls up that little menu that wouldnt you guess it doesnt have the options to build to kitchen or hospital. I figured it out after 2 hours, you click on medical and supply units to place them
This game is the only one of it's kind that does what it does. I was looking for this kind for a long time. The developer actually cares so it makes the game that much more fun, especially with the new multiplayer update.
I had a bad experience with the game crashing over and over
Very good game but still needs to be worked on
wonderfull little ww1 gem! only get it if u have the patience to learn it. it is exactly what it says it is. worth the price for sure! simulates weather and time well, which i like, and it uses wasd instead of the arrow keys thank the lawd
It's a cool and interesting game but I cannot suggest it to anyone. The performance is baaaaad man, when an assault happens to go try and take over a trench it turns into a lag fest and I'm not running this on a toaster oven either.
