As someone who loves JRPGs and everything from japan, it doesnt feel right to write something like that, but the game was mediocre and nothing special at all. You can clearly, that Omega Quintet was the first JRPG on the PS4 and one of the launch title in Japan for this genre. The story is literally a mishmash and has any stereotypical character, genre, twists etc. you ever saw in any anime. Still, the character are symphatic, the gameplay has a interesting twist with its "combo system" and there is so much "bonus" content like making your own music videos. I also liked how the chapters were divided like a anime, with a opening, ending and even a epilogue. Sadly, everything else is bad..... The story is mediocre and nothing special, it didnt even had a interesting or special twist, its literally the story from your typical Fantasy/Isekai anime. The missions/quests are most time the same "Bring X to Y, Kill X , Defeat so many X's". Its just farming quests and nothing more and sadly you can say the same about the gameplay. You always do the same combo and strategy, because there is no reason to use something else. Just use Harmonics to create a Combo and ignore everything else, because any other mechanic doesnt do any ♥♥♥♥ for you. But the worst part of the game is its "ending system". There are only 2 endings; Normal and True. The character routes doesnt matter at all, because in the end you get all the CGs for every character ending. The normal ending is just awful and the true ending........lets say, to get this one you need to play the game wary as possible. To get the true ending, you need to finish all side quests and many side quests have not only a time limit, but are also hidden behind some items you need to find, some are only avaible after you finished another quest, some need to be finished in a specific order (because some areas are blocked, until you get a special ability) and some are even avaible at the end of a chapter. There is always the chance to miss one and after that, there is only one thing to do.....reload. The only way to get the true ending is to play the game with a walktrough and save after every quest on another save point. Im not suprised, that most gamers dont know this game and most of my friends never played it on the PS4.
Omega Quintet –
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2942896311 Translation = It is super cute and has a great battle system. Oh, and sometimes it is even funny too.
TL;DR: It's a waste of time. If you're that desperate for a shoddy Idea Factory JRPG (instead of their new titles) go play Neptunia or Fairy Fencer which have some effort behind them and are actually enjoyable. If you already played those and ABSOLUTELY NEED to play a worse version of them, get this on a sale. True End is locked behind ridiculous conditions so make sure to use a guide or you'll need to do NG+, which is barely an NG+ because it resets everything anyway. If you like JRPGs, you probably will be bored with this. If you don't like JRPGs, you'll probably dislike them after this. If you like Idea Factory JRPGs, it's more of the same, but with less polish.
=====SHORT SUMMARY=====
PROS: + Once you grasp the combat system, aiming for big numbers and debuff spam is cool + Kanadeko + It's cheap so I don't feel ripped off, just annoyed. + The DLC dungeon can ease the pain by making you overleveled for the final area CONS: - The story is boring even for Idea Factory standards and 70% of the dialogue is filler - 80% of said filler dialogue consists of everyone telling MC she's incompetent - Massive empty areas meant to waste your time - The menus are awful - There's two good tracks in the OST - True End can be missable as soon as Chapter 2 if you don't revisit every area compulsively
===== FULL REVIEW =====
Story: There's monsters encroaching on the last place on Earth with humans, and it's up to some "idol group" to fend them off. Well, they call themselves idols but it's closer to magical girl fights being streamed to an audience. It's a straightforward "just keep beating the bad guys" story, 70% of the dialogue is filler, and the twist + ending are so ridiculously obvious I felt offended the characters acted like it was a surprise. True End: The reason I'm writing this. It requires you to do basically every sidequest in the game, most of which don't show up unless you compulsively revisit every single area looking for new items after every quest, and a good amount of these sidequests require savescumming rare enemy encounters. They're also all time-limited so if you advance the plot without finishing them, too bad, load your save. Combat: Standard JRPG with a "positioning" gimmick that just means place close range chars in front and long range chars in the back. The only "idol" aspect is a "Concert" mode that gives you stat boosts, and "Harmonics" which let you use everyone's skills at once in combos. The mechanics are nice even if all skill animations look like half-baked garbage. Stats: The game thinks it's too cool for RPG terminology so it uses random words for stats and doesn't explain anything to you. Hope you like reading in-game menus to find out. Crafting: Instead of letting you craft things with the Drops you have, you need to go to the disassemble menu, drops tab, disassemble everything, go back to crafting, click craft, and THEN you can make the item. All it does is waste your time. Speaking of wasting your time... THE EMPTY AREAS: Outside of the enemy corridors in the late-game, most of your time will be spent running through these god awful massive areas with nothing in them but 2-4 enemies per section. I'm talking minute long walks with maybe two enemies in sight. Cut these areas in size and you could probably cut my playtime in half. CONCLUSION: All in all this is probably the laziest Idea Factory JRPG I played. It's baffling to me that this is what they chose to start their PS4 lineup with, especially when the Neptunia Re;Birth games on the Vita had much more polish and care in every aspect. Almost every other Idea Factory title is better than this.
After having played OQ on PS4 I was looking for a better experience playing the game on PC. In short it is riddled with performance problems, not taking advantage of multiple cores effectively and actually works better under Linux (via Proton). Sadly Microsoft has stopped offering the DrirectX redist files required to play this in Proton <5.13 so I can no longer play it there. It's a decent game when running on PS4 but PC ports of PhyreEngine titles are generally inferior with inconsistent quality (Neptunia VII was mostly fine, for example). At least on the Xeon E5 2678 V3 I'm playing on it's not worth buying. Maybe on a Ryzen CPU or another part with similar IPC this title does better but I can't recommend this game simply because the <30FPS I get in dungeons and even the Office area makes it near unplayable for me.
Pros: +Combat is decent in theory once all the mechanics are unlocked. +The story is entertaining in a silly, breezy way. Don't think about it too hard. +Graphics are decent for a 2017 budget title. Cons: -Combat isn't balanced in the slightest. Your basic attacks are worthless. I once did a Harmonics Chain attack where all 5 of my characters attacked a basic trash mob 10 levels below them 20 times in a row, and they still couldn't kill it. You're all but forced to spam skill attacks and nothing else, meaning you can fight 2-3 battles before you have to guzzle some MP recovery items or return to base to refill. Once the enemies are allowed to use Order Break, you'll lose track of the times you get an enemy down to 1% HP, only to have it break the turn order and unload on you with 8 AOE attacks in a row, almost all of which deal status ailments and/or stat debuffs on top of the damage. It rarely feels like your fault you lost a fight, it typically feels like the game is cheating. -Sidequests are tedious and add nothing to the story, and there are far too many of them. They're beyond thankless. One of them requires you to fight a rare mob tucked away in the corner of a map where you'll probably never find it without a walkthrough. One of them in Chapter 7 requires you to make an item that costs 50,000 EP to make, and the quest reward is maybe 2,000 EP. This game's sidequests are like eating a plate of sand, just an awful ordeal you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. Unfortunately you have to do many of them if you want to unlock the skills that allow you to clear obstacles, and it's possible to be locked out of the true ending as early as chapter 3 if you miss one sidequest. -Dialogue is maddeningly redundant. Characters take ten lines to say something that could be said in one line. We get it, Momoka, you're cranky. You're always cranky. We get it, you don't approve of the new Verse Maidens. You've said it ten dozen times already. Please get some new material already. -The background music that plays in the Verse Maiden office is really annoying. Overall a pretty mediocre game. I'll probably push through to the end just to see where the story goes, but that's not exactly high praise.
Not Compile Hearts' finest work. I only made it through most of Chapter 3, so I dunno about the story as a whole. But what I've seen so far really isn't grabbing me. The setup isn't bad, but the progression is just not interesting. Mostly because of the characters. I don't mind Takt or Nene, but I hate pretty much every other character. They're all annoying, have inexplicable motivations, and do incredibly asinine things constantly. It's unbelievably stupid. Typical of CH, the tutorials are absolutely awful. I can never glean anything useful from them in any of their games. However, unlike their other games, I can't figure it out on my just messing around. Harmonics? Chain Skills? No idea how any of that works. Maybe it's just me. And the straw that broke the camels back for me - the side quests. Most of the time it's simple fetch or kill quests, and the game does a pretty good job telling you where you might find the objective. This is fine, until you get to late chapter 3, and get a quest that needs some skill that I don't have, that is locked behind a door I can't open. i presume there's some way to complete this quest, but after spending 2-3 hours trying to figure it out, plus another 1-2 hours googling I just don't care anymore. F this game.
Crashes every 10 minutes. Ghostlight are garbage, their port of FFF:ADF on the Switch is exactly the same.
Recomendo
It's a very cute game and there's some fun customisation of the main characters, but it's very grindy and the maps are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ huge and often feel a bit empty. I wouldn't really be able to recommend the game because I feel like most of my time in this game is spent walking, and the combat is very grindy and not very engaging.
