About
MADO MONOGATARI began as a series of primarily first-person dungeon-crawler RPGs created by Compile for the MSX and PC-98 during the 80's and 90's. Since then, MADO MONOGATARI has made a name for itself with its unforgettable characters and dungeon-crawling gameplay. Notably, the renowned puzzle series Puyo Puyo is a spinoff of the MADO MONOGATARI series.
The Ancient Magic Academy.
An academy with a long, storied past, known as the place where The Great Mage learned and graduated. Students study here to become Mages themselves.
A girl named Fia, wanting to enroll in the Academy, makes a long arduous journey from her hometown, and manages to get in through her own luck.
She now tries her best to get through the many challenges of schoolwork, strict professors, and mysterious happenings, all in pursuit of her goal to become a Great Mage herself, while also making friends with other students in her class.
Embark on an adventure with Fia and her classmates as they explore the mysteries of the Ancient Magic Academy and uncover the legends of The Great Mage.
Crawl through randomly generated dungeons and engage in real-time, turn-based battles to help Fia level up. Use Magic Artes and collect Elemental Orbs to fill up your gauge and unleash Great Magic Artes. Manage your inventory and stats as you traverse floor after floor of wondrous treasures and magical monsters—including Puyo, Skeleton T, and others!

Keep track of unlocked abilities with the Grimoire, which logs Fia's Magic Artes. Complete Assignments, Help Quests, and earn Learning Points that can be used to unlock nodes in the Grimoire for Fia to learn new Magic Artes.
Take a break from dungeon crawling and explore the school grounds where Fia can check out the Bulletin Board for unlocked mini-games, interact with classmates, grow ingredients, cook curry for in-dungeon boosts, and more! Find out what other goings on await Fia along her journey!

In the Storage Room of the school grounds, use items found in dungeons to synthesize into new equipment for Fia. Better synthesis items can later be unlocked via the Grimoire.
Cozy Magic Academy JRPG — The Birthplace of Puyo Puyo Returns
The Madou Monogatari series—the original dungeon-crawling RPG franchise born on MSX and PC-98 in the 80s and 90s, from which Puyo Puyo was born as a spinoff—makes its long-awaited PC return. This unusual collaboration between Idea Factory, Compile Heart, and STING brings the series back after more than a decade of silence. While widely known as Puyo Puyo's originator, the series predates even that spinoff; this is a proper successor to the source itself. Fia, a girl dreaming of enrolling in the Ancient Magic Academy, earns her place through sheer luck and determination, then sets out alongside an endearing cast of classmates to uncover the Academy's mysteries—an RPG where daily life and adventure intersect in wholesome fashion. Fia's earnest growth and the friendships she builds with an eclectic group of classmates are depicted with genuine care, and the warm, comedic character dynamics form the heart of the experience. That reviewers across multiple languages independently reached for words like "healing" and "wholesome" speaks to the strength of the character writing. The game is built on a two-layer structure of academy life and dungeon exploration. At the base, players check the Bulletin Board for quests and enjoy a variety of daily activities—chatting with classmates, farming, cooking curry for in-dungeon buffs, fishing. Dungeons are tackled via randomly generated floors with real-time movement and turn-based magic hybrid combat; collect Elemental Orbs to fill the gauge and trigger Great Magic Artes for a satisfying burst that can turn the tide. Learning Points earned in dungeons are allocated into the Grimoire skill tree to unlock and strengthen Fia's Magic Artes. After each run, materials are brought back to the Storage Room for equipment synthesis before heading into the next dungeon—a loop that gives returning to base a genuine sense of purpose and makes the rhythm feel natural. Visually, the combination of high-quality Live2D sprites and chibi 3D models makes a distinctive impression. Expression variants and blinking animations are crafted with care, extending even to supporting NPCs, and the overall polish is high enough to draw "meticulous" praise in reviews. Full Japanese voice acting is included, with Fia sharing her VA with the Neptune series—a pleasing casting detail for Compile Heart fans. That said, the repetitive nature of the randomly generated dungeon structure may feel slow-paced in places. This is a title better suited to players who want to savour the atmosphere than those seeking a demanding crawl. For players seeking relaxed, healing-focused gameplay, or fans hoping to experience the Puyo Puyo and Madou Monogatari lineage in a modern setting, this fits more than just adequately—it is arguably a title well worth seeking out. HHF-chan's comment: "Cute magic academy dungeon RPG! Powering up on curry and then tackling dungeons—it sounds delicious AND it's fun!"
Check out our Steam curator (link) , YouTube channel (link), and X(Twitter) (link)!

MADO MONOGATARI: Fia and the Wondrous Academy — A Cozy & Comedic Magical School Trip
TL;DR: A charming, low-stress dungeon crawler that leans heavily into cute anime humor and cozy academy life, though the combat and procedural dungeons can feel overly simplistic and repetitive.
[1] Intro :
MADO MONOGATARI returns after a long hiatus with a vibrant, goofy, and thoroughly lighthearted dungeon-crawling experience. It immediately grabbed my attention with its expressive character art and the sheer absurdity of Fia's slapstick misadventures as she stumbles her way into the Ancient Magic Academy. If you're looking for an intense, dark narrative, you won't find it here; instead, it offers a deeply cozy, slice-of-life anime adventure full of magical mishaps and endearing friendships.
[2] Game Experience :
World & Systems: The gameplay loops seamlessly between attending academy classes to level up your Grimoire and exploring procedurally generated mystery dungeons. Combat blends real-time movement with turn-based Magic Artes, and while the elemental combos are flashy, the encounters lack the strategic tension found in deeper RPGs. Outside the dungeon, gardening, crafting, and checking the bulletin board give the academy a comforting, lived-in feel. Story Shape (light spoilers): Fia's journey begins with her dumb luck getting her enrolled, and the plot escalates through a series of exams, mischievous schoolyard chaos, and uncovering the legacy of The Great Mage. The narrative gracefully avoids heavy stakes, opting instead for episodic antics that focus heavily on camaraderie and personal growth. Characters: The cast is an absolute delight, built around quirky, lovable archetypes. From an eternally exhausted librarian to the iconic, mischief-making Carbuncle, the interactions feel warm and consistently funny, even if the overall character development stays mostly surface-level. Pros:

Wonderfully vibrant visuals, adorable character designs, and excellent Japanese voice acting that significantly elevate the comedic script.
The academy life segments—including mini-games, crafting, and cooking curry—provide an incredibly cozy break from the combat.
A charming, low-stress atmosphere packed with nostalgic nods for fans of the classic series and Puyo Puyo spinoffs.
Cons:

The procedurally generated dungeons visually blur together, and the exploration mechanics become undeniably repetitive over extended play sessions.
Combat is extremely simplistic, leaving hardcore dungeon-crawler fans wishing for a steeper challenge or more tactical depth.

[3] Final Thoughts :
MADO MONOGATARI: Fia and the Wondrous Academy isn't trying to reinvent the JRPG wheel or punish players with grueling difficulty. It’s a whimsical, feel-good romp tailor-made for gamers who appreciate moe aesthetics, lighthearted humor, and low-stress exploration. It’s the gaming equivalent of a warm blanket—perfect for unwinding after a long day, as long as you don't mind the inherent grind.
[4] Side Note :
Enjoy more games like this? It is a comedy JRPG with funny characters; don't expect a serious story. The humour is good and there are many little hidden things you can interact with through the academy that help keep the game fresh. The dungeon levels are nice enough with progressively harder traps to keep you on your toes, and the combat is enjoyable, but you might get bored of it before the end of the game unless you like experimenting with builds: I was getting bored of the combat at about 12 hours in, but by experimenting with builds based on status effects, basic attacks, great magic artes, I enjoyed it for the almost 40 hours I played, so don't expect to keep and enjoy a single playstyle the entire game.
Mado Monogatari: Fia and the Wondrous Academy

Follow Good Game Collections to check other reviews. Let's collect good games together~!

Conclusion (If you don’t feel like to read the full text)
Mado Monogatari: Fia and the Wondrous Academy is a cute and comical anime-style dungeon-crawling RPG with a cast of distinct characters and almost no overlap in personality. The story is fun and full of humorous moments, often bringing smiles during play. The player can challenge 10+ dungeons throughout the story and also enjoy many side activities such as fishing, farming, and cooking. If this style of game appeals, this title comes highly recommended.
Gameplay
Mado Monogatari: Fia and the Wondrous Academy tells the story of Fia, an energetic girl who dreams of enrolling in the Ancient Magic Academy. However, her first day already causes chaos, leading her and 4 other new students to be labeled as problem students. As a newly enrolled student, Fia will try her best to overcome the many challenges of schoolwork, professors, and mysterious events within the academy alongside her newly met classmates while pursuing her goal of becoming a Great Mage one day! In the game, as a newly enrolled student at the Ancient Magic Academy, Fia, the player needs to learn various knowledge and subjects within the academy. These are presented as tasks that can be selected through the Schedule. In addition to the courses required for the main story, the game also offers many optional courses. When courses are completed, the player can unlock corresponding skills in the Grimoire, allowing Fia to cast more powerful magic or improve utility skills such as fishing, cooking, and garden cultivation. Furthermore, the player can accept various optional quests from the Help Wanted Box located in the School Ground! Dungeon crawling is the core of the gameplay. The game has several towers to explore, and most school “assignments” require the player to go into these randomly generated multi-floor 3D dungeons. However, each floor is relatively small, so it is not easy to get lost. VT is a very important value. In addition to picking up items on the ground, actions such as battles, opening chests, breaking obstacles, triggering traps, and descending to the next floor all consume VT. If VT runs out, max HP will begin to decrease instead until all max HP is depleted and forces Fia to return to the World Map. Like HP and MP, VT can be restored using items.
Note: In the main story, the player only needs to explore a little over 30 floors at most. However, for end game equipment or all achievements, the player will need to explore The Mage’s Tower (99 floors!). Since Fia can only carry 99 items at once, and every piece of equipment, consumable, and loot obtained during exploration counts toward this limit, it is important to plan the inventory carefully to explore deeper areas while still bringing back all valuable rewards!
When the player encounters enemies in a dungeon, the order of actions is determined by the time bar shown in the top right corner. However, if an attack is made before an enemy makes contact, a Symbol Attack, allowing skills to be used immediately at the start of battle, will be triggered while Normal Attacks can be performed at any time though damage is much less than skills. In battle, the player can only control Fia while the other 2 party members are controlled by AI. Using a skill will leave a Remnant on the ground, which becomes an Elemental Orb and fills the orb slots at the bottom right of the screen. These orbs can be used to cast Great Magic Artes which deal powerful attacks to all enemies. Before Remnants turn into Elemental Orbs, different types can also be combined to create other types of Elemental Orbs.
Note: It is recommended to use basic Elemental Orbs to cast Great Magic Artes as generating advanced Elemental Orbs takes time and effort (2 basic orbs for an advanced orbs)!

Pros

Very fun and entertaining story
Every character has a strong and unique personality
Cute character art and 3D chibi!
Carbuncle (Carby) and Puyo are so cute!
Simple yet deep combat system
Many optional quests and utilities
Many high-quality CGs
3 difficulties available
Although not explicitly stated, the game strongly implies that Fia’s grandma is
Arle Nadja!

Great BGMs
Full voice acting, including enemies!
Excellent English and Chinese translations

Areas for improvement

All the rarest materials are found in the final floors of Mage’s Tower. However, the player can only use waypoints that go up to floor 36. Progress beyond that requires climbing floor by floor, and after floor 51, merchants no longer appear. This means further progress relies on prior preparation and randomly obtained supplies while climbing. Although this is considered end game content, having to restart the climb due to unexpected failures along the way can feel very frustrating. A few additional waypoints or merchants in the later floors would greatly improve the experience!
The party AI feels too weak.

(©IDEA FACTORY/COMPILE HEART/STING©D4Enterprise Co.,Ltd.
I am leaving a negative review for one reason, which I already raised on the forums, this game has a basic screen tearing (almost certainly vsync) issue. My friend and I both bought the game (he on my recommendation) and when we first played, it didn't happen, it was fine. It only started when I played again a few weeks later, and I confirmed today it's also happening on his PC now, so it's not limited to just me. My guess is that the developer pushed out a patch update that introduces this problem, presumably by turning off vsync, and there is no vsync option in the settings. It's sad because I enjoyed my first couple hours with this game (not recorded on my playtime since it was on my friend's PC). Yeah maybe it's not the amazing actual Madou sequel everyone (including myself) was hoping for but I still liked what I saw on its own merits. The goofiness of Compile (Heart) is absolutely there. But screen tearing makes it unplayable. Especially for a game of this price, one would expect basic things like vsync to be done correctly.
MADO MONOGATARI: Fia and the Wondrous Academy is a 3D adventure JRPG developed by Idea Factory, Compile Heart, and STING, and published by Idea Factory International. It supports Steam Deck and offers three difficulty levels. Plot You play as the female protagonist, Fia. The story begins as she travels on foot to the Mage Academy alongside her pet to take the mage enrollment exam. Unfortunately, the test ended a few days earlier, but miraculously, the principal grants her a special exception, and she becomes an apprentice mage at the school. During the enrollment ceremony, a chaotic and funny incident occurs. As a result, the vice principal gathers the five students involved into a single special class. At first, the class members do not get along at all. Fia gradually recruits party members to complete school assignments: Will, a brown-haired swordsman who dreams of becoming a legendary hero and mainly uses fire magic; Leena, a blue-haired genius twin-tailed wizard with water affinity; Totto, a green-haired archer who uses wood-element skills and loves selling items and information for money; and the last member is Eska, a blonde dragonewt girl who wields a lance with holy affinity. Starting alone, Fia eventually forms a full party of five, exploring dungeons together with plenty of dialogue scenes focused on friendship, bonding, and getting to know one another. They aim to avoid expulsion, graduate together, and become great mages though the story flow can feel kinda slow. Gameplay In the game, you mainly attend classes, complete assignments to unlock new skills in your grimoire, and watch plenty of conversational cutscenes. You can also take missions from the help wanted board, plant various items by combining two seeds, fertilize fruit trees to harvest fruit, go fishing, and cook curry to boost your VIT. Increasing your mage rank unlocks more combat skills, higher fishing levels, additional land for farming, and more curry recipes through story progression. Don’t forget to upgrade your backpack, it’s essential, with a maximum capacity of 200 items. You will also need to synthesize equipment since the school shop only sells basic gear. There are several interactive objects, for example: you can interact with the globe in the principal’s office for a lucky roll that gives buffs such as lowering enemy levels (or the opposite), touch the vase in the principal’s room, and pet animals in the classroom, which sometimes give you items. The dungeon maps are randomly generated with average looking map. Early monsters are repetitive, consisting of only five elemental slimes, but as you unlock new towers, enemy variety increases and dungeons become more challenging with added some traps. VIT is crucial during dungeon exploration, so remember to bring some curry. You can break boxes, crystals, vases, and weeds to collect items before advancing to the next floor. Battles are real-time with turn-based elements: you can use normal attacks and skills, and unleash powerful Great Magic Artes by collecting elemental orbs during battle. You can change your job class at any time by speaking to the school principal and paying a small fee; available classes include Magic Knight, Wizard, Witch, Thief, Hermit, and Hunter. There are other activities you can enjoy: side quests to help people around the academy, and various contests such as fishing contests, cooking contests, team contests to earn points by defeating enemies in dungeons within a time limit, and point-gathering contests by breaking objects within a time limit. Art and Sound The game features charming 2D and 3D character sprites with Live2D animation. The chibi 3D character models are adorable. The main cast has interesting, fun, and distinct personalities that shine in their interactions. All characters, including supporting NPCs have smooth, fluid movements and even realistic blinking animations. The cast is brought to life by professional Japanese voice actors who perfectly match each character’s personality. I played the English version, and the translation quality is smooth and easy to read. Summary MADO MONOGATARI: Fia and the Wondrous Academy is a cute and laid-back 3D JRPG focused on school life, dungeon crawling adventure, and character bonding. You follow Fia and her party of five classmates as they study magic, complete school assignments, explore randomly generated dungeons and grow closer through adventure. The game blends real time combat with turn based mechanics, plus relaxing side content like farming, fishing, cooking, and joining contests. It shines with adorable chibi 3D models, smooth Live2D animations with veteran Japanese voice acting, and solid English translation. While the story pacing is slow and enemies feel repetitive, it’s a lighthearted RPG perfect for fans of slice-of-life fantasy and casual dungeon crawling. 8/10
