I beat the game, but at what cost. The one thing I've learned from the point and clicks I've played is that at some point the game will give you the f you puzzle. And if the experience is solid the reaction to said puzzle will just be that it's "that one bad part". This game isn't solid at all, its not very good. The game looks great, you can tell the sprites were crafted with care but everything surrounding the presentation is abysmal. The story is very stilted; the first two episodes boil down to busy work. It's not till episode three where the game finally starts doing anything. But for any context as to what is going on you have to read logs and a major piece of game narrative is behind a missable achievement. The worst part is the two characters you spend the most time with; Odysseus (you the player) and Barton (The blue robot in the pictures) are both awful and un-enjoyable to read from. Odysseus is written like every "the literal coolest guy ever who's so funny and full of sly humor" aka hes a prick. And Barton is just a whiner. The puzzles suck most of the time, every negative trope of the genre is a t full cylinder. Pixel hunting, ass backwards logic, padding sections with 20 extra steps; you name it it happens at least once. I'll give an example: In chapter 5 there's a small section where you play as a cat. Your goal is to kill a mouse that stole an important note. So earlier you find some cheese, easy you put it on a rock the mouse goes for it. The mouse gets scared of you and runs to its burrow. So what do you do? Now I remembered a small hole sized rock was on another screen so obviously i go to get it. It doesn't work, I try to think of every possible solution and nothing changes. So what did I do wrong? You see, when i went to the mouse hole, I clicked the INTERACT button instead of the LOOK button. Once i did that now i can pick the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rock up. There are multiple sections full of crap like this. There are significantly better P&C games on steam. Just don't touch this one.
I've always had a soft spot for point-and-click adventure games. Must have been all the old Sierra titles, among others. With the setting and characters, Beneath a Steel Sky comes to mind, a personal favorite. That this game is a love letter to the genre (and fans) from someone in the industry honestly feels about right. Now, I'm not a fan of how Odysseus talks to his robot buddy Barton, but it (eventually) becomes clear where that comes from. It doesn't make it better, but by the time the story comes full circle, you understand the characters so much better... which is a sign of a good story, imo. As the episodes proceed, you'll notice more and more typos. It's an annoyance, but doesn't interfere with the actual story. It was translated from Russian, so grant a little grace (something I had to tell myself a few times in the late game.) Worth playing through once as much as you can on your own (I think I broke down and sought help twice outside the game), then another play-through with an achievement guide. Why? Please trust that I'm doing you a favor. Save the achievement guide for a subsequent play-through. On that note, you don't have to finish out a given episode once you've unlocked all achievements for each... EXCEPT Episode 5. And for those who don't care about achievements... I'm recommending you make an exception. All in all, very enjoyable. If you're a fan of the genre, I think you'll like this one.
i really wanted to like this game ... but too many annoying puzzles - i'm pretty savvy with point & click games, but i had to look up the walkthrough SO many times, which takes the joy out of solving puzzles. i got to the beginning of episode 4 and realised it was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ me more than i was enjoying it. also the mumbling which replaces proper voice acting was annoying too. i gave it my best shot (23 hours) ... but sorry, can't recommend this one.
7/10
I love good point-and-click adventure games and - based on reviews and the screenshots - I was excited to play this one. Unfortunately, this is not a game that I would recommend to anyone. Decent graphics and passable music; the low-cost "voice acting" is a clever idea but it becomes grating pretty quickly. That mostly sums up the positives. The story is very thin and inconsequential, the characters (both of them) are unlikable and annoying (their "friendly banter" in unbearably awful), the puzzles are repetitive and require backtracking and moon logic all the time - the whole game feels more like a tiring, annoying chore than a game. There are many better games out there, either to buy or for free.
