That's certainly the case with Blacksmith (BS), since I don't even like the way it looks, so I don't know why I would have it. Regardless, with the goal of reviewing all the games I own, I decided to give BS a try so I could scratch it off the list. Maybe being a blacksmith won't be all bad.
Gameplay
As the local blacksmith, you'll help both townsfolk and heroes alike by repairing or building new tools, weaponry, and armor to meet their needs. When customers come into your shop, they request an item, and you can either repair it for them or craft a new one out of your raw materials. You are able to wander around town to speak with other locals, so that you can buy items and find other quests or tasks to complete. Although this would theoretically be the main focus of the game, it ironically opens with another of the game's mechanics. Not only do you equip the heroes, but you'll also play as them when they explore dungeons. This would theoretically provide more action to BS, but fighting enemies is done automatically, with you being able to activate extra attacks if available. It's not a well developed or interesting addition to the game, though it does break up the smithing routine. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2505376861
Controls
Although you can play the game with a controller, I followed the in-game instructions, which were for the mouse and keyboard. Switching around from task to task isn't confusing because the controls were all done sensibly. However, it's not very engaging and isn't as efficient as it could have been. Moving around your own smithy could have been omitted entirely for quick menu navigation, hopping from the customer to the work stations.
Story
I didn't give the game much of my time, so I can't say how its story progresses. According to some of the achievements, it may get kind of interesting. However, as you begin the game, there's no prologue; you only hear about a war that recently ended, which completely decimated the town you live in. The main detriment of this is that the mines are infested with monsters, so your raw resources are locked behind the need to clear the dungeons first. With the entire point of BS being to smith weapons, this seems to undermine the whole idea. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2505377176
Graphics
With how the visuals in BS work, everything looks really flat. A few background objects, such as your bucket and anvil, have some roundness and depth, but that just contrasts against everything else which doesn't have those features. For instance, when the heroes hold their weapons, it looks like a cardboard cutout holding a smaller piece of cardboard. This visual style has worked before, but the colored pencil coloring on the characters and environment reinforces the idea everything is paper-thin. Instead of being stylized or creating an interesting illusory effect, it makes me think it's taking the cheapest route possible.
Sound Design
When listening to the background music, I noticed that it didn't change when I switched from inside my smithy to playing in the dungeon. Since that's one place I'd expect the music to transition, I suspect there may only be a single song that plays constantly in BS. It's a fitting enough instrumental track for an old-timey game, and I noticed the use of something like a cowbell for part of the percussion. In spite of the meme, it's kind of a novelty and was interesting to note.
Pros
🌟 The gameplay is simple, and there's some variety, since you also take on the perspective of the heroes attempting to clear dungeons. 🌟 Perhaps relating to the simple gameplay, the controls seemed to function well enough.
Cons
❌ Quite a few negative reviews point out problems with bugs, some of which break the game. I didn't experience them myself, yet you might want to look into the discussion boards to see if they're still present. ❌ Even when you switch the gameplay to full speed, combat is slow as molasses. If you haven't repaired or sold the heroes a new weapon, they'll also do next to no damage. ❌ This is probably my own neurosis, but seeing all the numbers with decimals instead of whole numbers irked me. A gold coin can't be portioned out.
Tips
🔍 Read through the tutorial information, as the game has a very slow start. Not taking care of certain matters early on will delay your progress even further, such as not going to the mines and masonry promptly. 🔍 Strike the rings just after they land on the anvil, and don't let the quench bar fill up all the way, as it could ruin the entire product. Slightly underdone is better. 🔍 If you try to tackle a dungeon that's out of your league, you can retreat without penalty.
Final Thoughts
Having already mentioned that I don't even remember where I got this game, and that I never really wanted to play it, I'm not going to belabor the negative aspects of BS further. If you feel so inclined, you can watch my YouTube video to hear me grumble about the experience. BS wasn't for me, nor do I suspect most people, though I'm happy for those who saw something more and enjoyed themselves with it. This specific concept has been done a few times over, so much so that if you search Blacksmith on Steam, BS doesn't even make the preview window. I'm fairly certain you have better options available if you're really wanting to forge weapons in a sim game, so I wouldn't recommend this title.
Follow our Curator Group for more reviews
Blacksmith has an interesting idea that ultimately falls apart due to its execution. The UI leaves a lot to be desired, while the gameplay overall is fairly slow paced and repetitive. A few design choices feel more concerned with realism instead of enjoyment or gameplay. An example is that you cannot invite people to your shop unless it is still morning. While sure, the idea that the people of this town would be too busy working in the middle of the day makes sense, for gameplay purposes it just adds an extra step in which you have to leave your shop and walk to their shop/home. This does nothing but add an extremely minor layer of immersion, and waste some time. Similarly, you can't invite people unless you are good friends with them. The idea is that these people wouldn't just show up to a stranger's shop simply because he asked them to, but for gameplay it just forces you to walk to their shop again. For the UI, it feels very clunky and unrefined. A number of menus feel poorly sized, while the drop down menus are unwieldy, due to the large amount of options and the very small drop down size. Overall, I find it tough to recommend at this price given all the issues this game has.
I just fancy blacksmithing and gave a chance to the only game that seems to have a depth in more than one way. I came looking for copper, found gold. It deserves much more credit than it has. Loved it.
Just nipped back to write a first impressions review. In short, I can only guess that content updates are regular, as many of the other reviews complain of lack of tutorials, yet there appears to be an abundance of them. That said, you are pretty much free to decide if you wish to focus on supplying tools and equipment on demand or wish to prioritise other things. I do feel the day was a little rushed and would prefer the clock advanced at half the current pace. It would also be nice to see the clock while looking at the map. In addition, where as you'd expect many buildings close at certain hours, it would be more friendly if "Closed" signs and "Open at" appeared constantly over the currently closed buildings, so you could instantly see your options. When you find and chat with villagers you'll automatically note things that are needed by them ie tools. When in the smithy, click the appropriate yellow button and you'll see the currently outstanding list. It would improve things further if you had "objectives" added too. Though the game leaves you free to pursue your preferences, and talking to the NPCs does steer you towards some of the priorities, having a helpful reminder at hand for things you should probably get done would be good. The speed of the day makes it likely you won't get all of your to-do list done though, so feels a bit rushed in pace, but it's not a big issue. The graphics are reminiscent of "Don't Starve". All in all though, especially for an Indie title, it's one I'd highly recommend giving a go. The game play is interesting. For those moaning about how tedious smithing is, I would point out that at least on first impressions it's a relatively quick and straightforward process and does deserve a game mechanic. But then with such reviews having 2 hours game play time, despite numerous things to do, each to their own.. The game itself is built upon a good idea. It's different and does stand out on that front and there is most certainly a gap in the market that needed filling. Being able to smelt some ore, work a few alloys, knock together a new saucepan for the local inn keep, improving the quality of his services for the residents and passing heroes, then fund the growth of the inn lodgings, equip a hero and fund a trip to the local mine for more ore... all in all first impressions are of a game with great scope and plenty of interest. I'll be heading back to it shortly. I would have to recommend this one. Clearly an indie title, it has charm and a wide scope of game play. For the casual gamer, you'll be please to know it's hard to "get wrong". You get resources daily and can buy more from the miners. Clicking "Clients" will show you the state of your known customers. Upgrading their gear to a better quality metal is the simplest means to make profits assuming of course they have the means to pay. If not, check if you can bring them any business ie by trade. For the most part there is no set order for things you need to do. The speed the day passes is a little fast for those who like to chill and mill things over. Would be nice if that was an option to slow down. As there seem to be a small handful of people struggling, some general tips: 1) DON'T send your heroes on tougher quests unless they are ready. Copper quests are easiest, with the top seemingly easier than the next one down etc. There are means to increase your party size. Take advantage of it if you plan to take on harder content. Make sure you've used the Clients button to summon and re-equip heroes who aren't well geared when you have the opportunity. Keep an eye on their general state. 2) At the smithy hit the button to view your Inventory / Stock. The first tab shows you ore, next shows you ingots, going through to equipment at the end. If you have old, unwanted equipment, you can smelt it at the smelter to get some resources back. When smelting ores, ideally use any goblin ears / tin etc you have to make better quality metal first, using up spare copper as a last resort. DON'T use the alloys function unless you need to ie to convert copper to bronze. Unless your timing is good you'll likely otherwise just waste metal and likely have been better off doing it from ore. 3) You CAN equip heroes with the wrong armour type ie leather to make ends meet but if you upgrade the tools of your miner and buy an ore cart, you'll likely get plenty of metal in no time. 4) Sending heroes with big heavy weapons in one group will likely drop the mobs pretty fast. Make sure your front guy is beefed up with protection OR take some potions to heal him.
Crashes all the time, this last time was the last one I'll have. Numerous game ending bugs 1 - Unable to research cloth/leather(yes i have met with repeatedly the tailor/tanner) 2 - Farm plots are unusable or modifiable after the beginning plots and after the first plant 3 - Randomly able to equip the tool characters with the wrong tool, and unable to change back 4 - Again as said first, crashes all the time
Blacksmith is a smithing game where you take the role of a smith in a little town. Adventurers come to your shop asking for stronger gear, repairs or miscellaneous items that only a smith of high caliber can produce. You help the town expand by delving in dungeons and caves, assisting heroes in quests and exploring their stories. For example, the farmer will come to you and ask you to repair his wall and you can then plant a number of seeds that would then yield fruit and vegetables. Aesthetically this game is hand drawn and honestly looks decent. Where the game shines, is its mechanics. Smithing with copper makes for cheap, but very brittle weapons and gear. Crafting with iron, makes it stronger. The game has a story, but you can play it at your own pace. The developer also updated the music of the game (it fits perfectly) to have a different instrumental version of the songs. I just feel that the song sometimes gets a bit repetitive. I highly recommend this game for a casual gamer or a slow day.
I bought this game without knowing much about it beyond what's on the store page and I genuinely enjoyed it. It's not perfect by any means, there are some bugs... However, the core game play is solid. If you are looking for a way to forge away a few afternoons give it a try, you'll know rather quickly if this game is for you or not. There is also some new content and bug fixes going on, that got me back into the game again. Thanks for the game dev!
This game is difficult to get started, because the game gives the player too many options out the gate with not enough direction. When help is given, it's provided as a page of instructions instead of a more intuitive learn-as-you-go. On top of this, the UI feels clunky.
A very unique perspective on the RPG scene. You play as the blacksmith having to pay close attention to the materials you use to craft various items and interact with various adventurers gearing them up and even tagging along for their escapades should you want to. I'd suggest you try it out, I loved this game and absolutely demolished it. It's got more than 14 hours of gameplay within it but steam only recorded one session of mine for whatever reason. *shrug* Worth every penny and a very active developer is quick to answer any concerns or questions you have about the game it'd seem!!
