An intriguing wage-slavery simulation of sorts where you, as a mighty rat, scramble to find the last scraps of cheese, and a way to escape the dreaded techno-barbaric labyrinth before doom finds you.
Cyberrats are an intriguing game that really nails its simple yet brilliant concept. You are a rat, trapped in a maze populated by nightmarish amalgamations of rat and steel. The only thing standing in the way of you and freedom are traps, mechanical monstrosities and cheese, so get in there and survive the gauntlet again and again while growing more and more adapted to the environment. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3644545926 The gameplay loop is simple. You enter the labyrinth with the goal to collect 10 cheese, each rat is its own little tiny character with upgrades such as stamina, smell and hearing making it incrementally easier to avoid the many deathtraps that litter the labyrinth. The game is set over 3 phases, each harder than the earlier and with increasing prevalence of the cyborg horrors that hunt you. You get three rats to start out and can upgrade them with the ATOMS you scrounge up as you go. Each upgrade feels important in its own way and getting back in the action with a brand new rat after playing on your evolved super rat for a few rounds really made you appreciate the difference. I found the difficulty to be just enough for me to beat the game yet offered plenty of tense moments when the hunters almost got to me despite my best efforts. Should you die with your favourite rodent there are powerups available called Life DNA that gives you a way to revive your favourite little furling. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3644547303 This game immediately made me think of a slightly more hellish version of the Universe 25 experiment, a different style of rodent experiment but sinister in its own simplicity. And this game offered plenty of tense moments since you have no way of attacking back against the horrors of the labyrinth. The level design as well as the clever use of upgrades is also oozing with atmosphere with hearing giving you a faint outline of the cyborg hunters as they get closer. The theme is brilliant with its lab POV, a grim reminder of all the lab animals we are abusing in our march to progress. Now this is not a long game and I finished the main campaign in one evening, but the hardcore mode is definitely something I can see myself coming back to where you get one rat, one life and no upgrades. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3644546603 Conclusion: This is a great little stealth survival horror with a brilliant theme, and since it has my absolute favourite mammal as its protagonist it is an instant recommendation. Check it out if you, like me, have a sneaky nature and a knack for avoiding conflicts! I got this game to support the dev who taught me about proc gen. It's cool to see the stuff that he explained on his YT channel implemented in a complete game. Congrats to the dev on finishing this, The variations of rats with each having different buffs is a pretty neat mechanic and it made me have to start thinking tactically about how to play each rat differently. Neat stuff!
pretty good multiplayer would make this awsome, more complex puzzles would help like door switches, and more levels/layouts but overall 9/10
Cyber Rats, developed and published by Outpost Games, presents a brutally atmospheric survival-horror roguelite built around a strikingly helpless premise: you are not a soldier, not a hero, but a lab rat trapped in an AI-controlled maze designed for experimentation and extermination. The game wastes no time establishing its oppressive mood—the sterile steel corridors, the surgical lighting, and the ever-present hum of machinery all contribute to a world where you are not meant to survive. From the moment you begin, the facility feels like an elaborate death machine, a cold labyrinth that treats you as nothing more than biological material to be observed, manipulated, and ultimately destroyed. Each playthrough takes place within a procedurally generated maze, and this shifting architecture is one of the game’s most defining elements. With every run, the facility reshapes itself, altering pathways, trap placements, and the locations of roaming threats. This unpredictability ensures that no amount of memorization can protect you; survival depends on reacting to danger in the moment, reading environmental cues, and anticipating threats before they strike. It gives the game a constant underlying tension—every corridor is an unknown, every silence suspicious, and every open space a potential ambush. The randomness keeps the horror fresh, but it also means the game never truly feels safe, even for experienced players. Between these harrowing runs, Cyber Rats introduces a roguelite progression system that adds a layer of long-term growth and experimentation. DNA fragments and upgrade materials earned through survival attempts can be used to evolve different rat variations, ranging from grotesque mutants to cyber-enhanced survivors. These forms provide subtle advantages, making subsequent runs feel more manageable without undermining the core vulnerability that defines the experience. The upgrade system becomes both a motivation and a lifeline—you push deeper into the maze not just to escape, but to gather enough resources to give your next attempt a slightly better chance of success. Moment-to-moment gameplay prioritizes stealth, caution, and constant observation. As a small, fragile creature, you have no meaningful means of fighting back against the horrors stalking the facility. Cyborg hunters, mechanical drones, and other experimental monstrosities patrol the halls, and even simple traps can end a run instantly. This vulnerability becomes the heart of the horror: danger is never heroic, never cinematic—it is sudden, brutal, and often silent. Navigating the maze means paying attention to sounds, shadows, and flickers of movement, because a single misjudgment can send you back to the beginning. The game’s pacing reinforces this anxiety, demanding slow, deliberate movements in one moment and frantic scrambling the next. Visually, Cyber Rats leans into a hybrid of cyberpunk machinery and biological grotesquery. The facility is full of cold metal surfaces, flickering monitors, exposed wiring, and bio-mechanical oddities that look ripped from an unethical laboratory experiment. The lighting is harsh, the spaces claustrophobic, and the ambience unsettling. Sound design plays an equally important role—every metallic clank, buzzing light fixture, and mechanical hum compounds the sense that the environment itself is alive and watching. Rather than relying on jump scares, the game uses atmosphere and uncertainty to maintain a pervasive dread. The very intensity that makes the game memorable also gives rise to its rougher edges. Procedural generation sometimes produces situations that feel unfair or impossible to predict, leading to abrupt deaths that may frustrate players who prefer more controlled difficulty curves. The lack of narrative structure means that your motivation must come from gameplay rather than story progression. There are no cutscenes, no character arcs, and no dramatic reveals—only the emergent narrative you create through survival, failure, and the evolution of your rats. For some, this minimalist storytelling reinforces the game’s bleak tone; for others, it may feel too sparse. Cyber Rats ultimately thrives on its commitment to vulnerability, unpredictability, and tension. It is built for players who enjoy harsh survival challenges, oppressive horror atmospheres, and the addictive loop of roguelite progression. Every escape feels earned, every upgrade significant, and every death a lesson in humility. At the same time, it demands patience and resilience, and those who prefer structured narratives or more forgiving gameplay may find its brutality overwhelming. In the end, Cyber Rats succeeds by delivering a distinct and memorable experience—one that traps you in the body of a terrified experiment fighting for survival in a labyrinth of machines and monsters. It is grim, unforgiving, and at times merciless, but for players who appreciate horror that puts them at the bottom of the food chain, it offers an immersive and haunting journey that lingers long after each doomed attempt. Rating: 8/10
Really liked this game. Felt like a true horror game because I really wanted my rat to live and the levels were hard but still beatable. Would love to see this game grow into something bigger, with customization, different game modes and maybe a story! While my gameplay was only 2hrs to beat it I had a blast and did not regret spending a dime on the experience.
pretty good. all games should have couch coop though.
This is a great weekend game. It starts off simple but boy does that change. You get attached to your little rat as they upgrade and survive making it even more intense knowing each run could be their last. This is a creative little game and while the mechanics are simple, each level feels rewarding to complete
M.f.G. Nox
