This is a sumptuous palace built for the seven princesses. It is a "birdcage" glorified with the name "garden"… Irell Reis was once a famous general leading thousands of soldiers. However, the defeat three years ago cost him everything. Now, he is summoned by the Emperor of Celantu again...

Tried to like it, got a bad ending, lost interest in the genre
I started this game with the (possibly stupid) idea of trying to get through a decent chunk of gameplay without resorting to a detailed walkthrough. In hindsight, it has opened my eyes to how utterly broken games like these can be. Visual novels come in all shapes and sizes. You get some that are completely linear, others that have multiple endings, and still others that show roadmaps to help you figure out where the branching points are, and yet others that have an invisible friendship points system per love interest. This one, while it has multiple endings and is something I am familiar with, is not something I think I enjoy any longer. Maybe I am coming down hard on this particular game and I am offending some people... if so I'm sorry but so be it. I think games like these have gradually worn me down to the point where I can't deal with it any more - I would LIKE to be able to play and enjoy something like this, and figure out such things like 'correct choices' (often arbitrarily decided by developers with no basis for logic or real personalities) to get all the 'correct' endings by myself without the need for a walkthrough. ______________________________________________ As someone that has only managed one piddly bad ending, I thought the story (what little I learned) was rubbish. The protagonist comes across as a mindless war general in the prologue, that is only good for killing the enemy and blindly obeying orders. Against my better judgement I keep playing, hoping it will get better. By some freak turn of events you are now hated in your homelands, but end up in a paradise of princesses, and now have to teach them fencing. So much for hoping it would get better... there is nothing here that helps to suspend the reader's disbelief. Suspending disbelief is critical to good storytelling, and this game's story is right up there with flying pigs, pink grass, satan worshipping budgies and inside-out zombie fairies from heaven. It isn't just the overall plot that seems so outlandish. In at least two scenes I struggled to tell from whose perspective the scene was being told. It could be a 'lost in translation' thing as other reviewers have pointed out but the whole script seems ill-conceived. I mean, it's the 21st century and people are still blaming translation? In fact, the more I read the less I cared. One bimbo keeps repeating you're a 'plebeian', so I flat out never spoke to her when given the choice of which princess to spend time with during the choice-map scenes. I mean, what guy would? I don't even know how many princesses there are. Probably the author doesn't either. I think seven or so, but for the purposes of the story you only get to choose between three or four. Ruling out the one that hates you and call you a pleb, that just leaves Captain Clueless and Bipolar, so maybe going up to the floating rose garden and jumping off an edge should have been another option too. To top it all off is a tea making minigame incorporated into the story, which REALLY isn't the reason I play VNs. I only played it twice before I met my Untimely End in a bad ending, and both my teas were the worst rank, even though I'm pretty sure a rose tea, and a blueberry tea, actually do exist. If only nightshade was an ingredient. I don't expect anyone to agree with this somewhat hasty and frustrated review, especially as I only got one bad ending, but it's kind of a standard thing with these types of games. Oblivious Garden isn't the only game where you basically have to have an open walkthrough tab on your web browser while you play, and some people will happily do this to get through these games without even stopping to think if that is truly fun or right. In the end, I've had enough. Open webpages be damned, I just want to enjoy some good VNs without having to resort to an open book of answers. And a good story to match.
I initially saw the trailer and immidiately knew that I need this game! The story is a combination of love, politics, drama and magic and gets pretty wild occasionally. The writing felt somewhat inconsistent at times which gave me the impression that the amazing potential of the setting isn't fully used but perhaps that's because of the somewhat difficult(?) translation. Ironically the characters who interested me the most ended up only being side characters (Charlotte, Marian, Intelia, Ereface </3) but the main cast is great too! I also enjoyed the art, music, making biohazardous tea and Leira's death threats ^_^ Very fun overall.
