Love/hate relationship. Takes the Puzzle Quest formula and works it into a keen multi-party fascimile. The game is fun, but only for awhile. The balance suffers, and if you don't get a few solid combos/set-ups in the first couple turns, you're going to lose or spend a frustrating amount of time trying to dig yourself out of a hole. Which leads me to the one MASSIVE, game-breaking oversight: how the everloving hell do you design several hundred levels of grind WITHOUT a quick reset option?? Worse, the game doesn't recognize any button presses until after the enemy has finished its turn, which can take up to a minute! Seriously, you just want to hit ESC key, but the game presses on with combo after combo after stack after stack after bonus turn after bonus as your party is slowly decimated and you are powerless to quit out of the battle (upon which you are greeted with a slide whistle sound effect). Rage fuel. It's a solid game, just...too repetitive and rage-inducing for a casual.
I do like match-3 games with some twist like simple RPG, building, managing and other elements. I've got Oafmatch just out of curiosity and really liked it (till the achievement grinding part, duh). It has this party of four champions + 6 color of gems / items mechanics that doesn't matter much in the beginning, but you'll have to think of a proper setup for the endgame stuff. And the humorous writing of course, it's very well done to my mind and adds a smile every now and then (with Knuckles and Schwann playing the key role). Judging by the numbers It appears that Oafmatch is mostly overlooked by players and all these poor souls are missing a really nice game for a ridiculously low (even default) price. Maybe some additional advertising could've helped aside from a simple price drop on sale, but well, probably too late for that anyway. If you are having issues with some achievements or the general game progression, feel free to check out my guide: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1317026985 UPD 2024-06-10: The ubtoinable achievement was removed from the game, so Oafmatch can now be safely 100%. Thank you SO MUCH for clearing this one out!
Have you played 10000000 or YMBAB? This is the game for you. Simple and very fun!
The most involved 3-match game I've yet to play. Oafmatch combines deep RPG elements, casual 3-match gameplay, and very silly dialogue. You won't reach endgame anytime soon. I have it on casually in the background to kill boredom and have barely scratched the surface here. Also incorporated are community events, powerups that trigger when you or other players get excellent streaks going. While that isn't much, it's a great foot in the door to more inclusive and interactive gameplay. For those looking for a more interactive and thoughtful time-killer than your usual clicker game, Oafmatch is a great alternative.
Me at purchase time: Match-three games are so dumb. I'm only getting this because so-and-so recommended this for some dumb reason and its on sale. *grumblegrumblegrumble* ...aaaand two days later it's the most played non-multiplayer game in my Steam library. This game is stupidly addictive. Yes, match-three games are still really lame, but this one is worth it for the dumb-yet-funny plot and the RPG stats that require actual strategy. Only downsides for me were that it is Windows-only (which limits me to my main gaming desktop at home instead of my portable MacBook which I use everywhere), and it was actually so addictive I literally had to force myself to stop playing for a few days so I would actually do work.
