Good
Absolutely one of the best RPGs I played in my whole life. The story is absolutely great. I really like the way you as player are involved in the story. And the way how the different endings work out, and that they don't are just showed to you, you have to actually play them. The combat system is also nice. You don't just select a command, you also have to press (or release) a button at the right moment. If you have, like me, selected battle commands in RPGs for more than 30 years, it really helps to not get bored to easily during the battles.
I just finished my first playthrough of Numina after sitting on it for a few years... I definitely regret not having completed it sooner! I remember downloading and playing the demo for it ages ago through itch.io before the first part was even completed. Seeing what the game has become now is honestly really touching... It's easily become one of my favorite RPGs, and I imagine I will replay it many times in the future. Though I will say it's fostered a slightly concerning parasocial relationship within me... which is perhaps a sign of good character writing? In any case, I do appreciate the game's end message of
telling us to return to our own world, at least in the Noema (I hope I'm remembering the name right) ending.
I adore the characters--each person feels distinct from the other, and their backstories really helped flesh out the story and added multiple perspectives to the game. You could really understand the villains as well, though I deeply loathed them and still found many unforgivable. The world of Alterna felt huge, and each area had its own culture, its own story to tell. Everything felt like it mattered, which I greatly appreciate in a story-heavy game. Also, given that you play as yourself, the variety of text choices was nice, though I often struggled between them. The only areas I'd point out for improvement have to do with cosmetic/gameplay stuff and not the story itself. The text sometimes goes a bit wonky for me, with odd chunks missing from letters. Some text in the English ver. isn't properly translated from the German, specifically the man who checks your love meter between the characters. There's another one that I can't quite remember at the moment. The walking areas on certain maps seem a bit odd, like not being able to walk on a random patch of grass or behind certain trees/buildings. Ultimately, these things didn't affect my love for the game, and I wouldn't say they deterred me from playing so much as I found them funny. Thank you to the dev team for creating such a fun game! The passion and hard work shines through, and I imagine my life would've been just a bit duller without it.
A nice take on classic JRPG. I've played many JRPGs before, even the ones not available on Steam due to its age hehe. This game definitely reminds me of the older RPGMaker games while bringing in fresh mechanics like the relationship level between characters and the timing mechanics in battles. Beautiful art and the maps are also well-designed. Worth the few bucks you have to spend.
Yes. All of my yes. The story has gripped me in the first hour, the animations are just *chef's kiss*, the mapping is sublime, the music is amazing, and the battle system is...sort of Lost Odyssey-ish? I don't mind timed ring hits in a turn-based system, that's cool, but the other methods of when you choose to attack (eg. fitting a straight line in where it's supposed to go or putting the gauge between certain points) are honestly pretty annoying. That's my only gripe so far. Why couldn't it have just been a ring-based timed hit system ala Lost Odyssey for *all* the characters? Get this. Especially if it's ever on sale. Worth it.
WHY IS IT OVER?! I DON'T TO GO BACK TO MY WORLD, SHAWN!
Also, I wish there was more coverage so I could find out what the other three endings were.
100% recomendado.
