Just as you can never go home, you also can never go back to 90's gameplay. I've been wanting a Myth remake for a long time but having it in my hand, it needed the XCOM treatment - updated gameplay - not the Xenonauts treatment, i.e. the recreated gameplay we have here. To be fair to the devs, I looked up gameplay videos of old favorites Myth 1 &2, and all it did was spoil the memory. Nordic Warriors feels like the lamentable Myth 3 : Wolf Age did - the Bungie-cord has snapped. The world-building and plot here are steps back from the Bungie's wild campaigns and imaginative set piece missions. The finnicky real-time positioning and arrow dodging remain. Most of the units are straight recreations. Even the weird save/campaign dynamic for character leveling remains. The graphics upgrade is not significant, the world is barren, the combat effects jerky and underwhelming. The tone is also inconsistent, with lame joke loading screens shattering the tone that the game is trying to set everywhere else. As this is a product I've been asking for and was delighted to stumble upon, and I appreciate the love and effort that went into making this, some comments on where this formula might go to address my criticisms are below. Overall, I remember Myth for sweeping vistas, frequent ambushes with wild new units squad-wiping everything, huge terrain-deforming explosions, the Fallen Lords, the talking head, surly dwarves blowing themselves up on accident, and that narrator. So...: 1. Art-style: Texas-size the things that Myth was memorable for: bigger explosions, deformable terrain, bigger (I'm talking Shadow of the Colossus sized) enemies, bigger hordes, huge magic effects, and if the vistas be barren, make them soaring and iconic in their barrenness. 2. Plot/Setting: Original IP was clearly the necessary choice, so again, lean into that more. If it has to be Vikings, give us weird Viking legend stuff. If it's more generally Norse, give us Northern Lights, talking whales, bioluminescent enemies, longboats, valkyries, waterfalls, living snow drifts, fairies, dog sleds and reindeer teams, some enemy version of Santa as a Fallen Lord...whatever. The world building here was more like world lego-ing from Nordic central casting, whereas in the Myths, it could carry you through the weaker missions. 3. Gameplay: On the tactical side, crib some notes from modern success stories like They Are Billions' horde/tower defense missions, Shadow of Mordor's nemesis system, XCom's character customization and permadeath, Banner Saga's character-oriented armies, or some combat synergies between characters. Baby-sitting archers as they dodge projectiles was not fun 20 years ago, it's not fun now. I would lean into the chaos of dwarves blowing themselves up, but in a way that doesn't mean "mission over." On the strategic side, give the player some agency in mission selection, character selection, a research tree, something. Sid Meier says that great games revolve around making interesting choices...Myth-likes need to give players some choice. 4. Sound - the music is good. For narration, hire Wayne June. I'm sorry to have left a negative review as I feel like I'm the nostalgia-cuffed consumer who presumably demands as little change as possible and therefore has similarly cuffed the devs to an outdated formula. I hope either this team or another can pick up on lessons learned and take another attempt at it. Or perhaps the rights holders for Myth will dig the IP out of the cellar and put some money behind a remake.
So, I really appreciate what they're trying to do here. I was a huge fan of Myth back in the day, and have often lamented that it's odd sub-genre of RTS never took off. So I was really stoked when I discovered this, and bought it immediately! This tries very hard to hew EXTREMELY close to Myth. Maybe a bit too much so? So my list of pros and cons pretty much boils down to "how is this better or worse than Myth". Pros: - Myth with modern graphics. - Reasonable modern camera controls. Myth's camera controls were always kinda weird and janky. Cons: - Graphics are still really primitive by modern standards. The animations in particular feel really stiff. - The unit selection controls are really spotty. Trying to double-click a unit to select it and the ones around it while it's moving almost never worked. - The physics is toned down a lot. This is one of the best parts of Myth. Arrows would hit your own units if they were in the way, so you'd have to carefully position melee units and archers to avoid friendly fire. Any random bit of shrapnel could become a deadly projectile when affected by an explosion. This made the battlefield so much more chaotic, dynamic and interesting that a typical RTS. But in this, arrows almost never hit friendly units, and shrapnel seems to not be a thing. - Alchemist bombs are very confusing. Like, you tell them to attack, you see the flaming bomb fly at the target, and then just ... disappear. When one eventually DOES go off, then there will be secondary explosions nearby. So I assume what's happening is that sometimes the bombs go out and bounce around, just like the dwarven molotovs in Myth. The problem is that the only graphics on the alchemist bombs seems to be the fire, so when the fire goes out they become invisible. - Attacking the ground with ctrl-click doesn't work properly. It doesn't do anything unless that spot happens to contain a destructible item. And there's no way to tell if you're targeting a destructible item except to ctrl-click around a bit and see if it eventually shows the big circle on the ground indicating it's attacking something. - Formation facing is backwards. Intuitively, you expect the formation to be facing the cursor, right? But it does the opposite. Overall, while I applaud the effort, this game actually feels quite a bit MORE janky than Myth II: Soulblighter does, despite being over 20 years newer in a modern engine. I was skeptical that could be true, but I went and downloaded the Myth II demo from Project Magma, which still plays on modern Windows, and confirmed, despite the archaic sprite graphics and wonky camera controls, that the controls and gameplay were way tighter. I know this is a labor of love by a 2 person team, and pretty much the only people trying to make a thing I really want to exist, so I want to cut them some slack for that. But it's also still a product that they're charging money for, and sadly, it doesn't rise to the bar of being worth the money for me. I'm probably not going to play any more of it, and I don't feel like I can recommend it to others. I really want to see more games like Myth, but unfortunately, this isn't it.
A love letter to the Myth franchise - totally recommend it.
Like Bungie's Myth
Such an nostalgia bomb for those of us old timers that loved the Myth series of games, and if you DID love those games, then this will scratch that itch that has gone unaddressed for oh, so long. If it wasn't meant to be an homage to them, I'd be rather stunned. For that, I give it two gigantic thumbs up! Now for the "BUT". BUT...if you didn't love those games or never played them, I can kind of see this being a let-down/disappointment if you're expecting a modern gaming experience. This isn't it. It is slow paced, and bit clunky, it has an abysmal story, no voice-acting, minimal complexity, horrible pacing, and crap graphics. It is just what I was hoping for as a MYTH fan (having read the reviews that were making the comparison), but again, if you're not a MYTH fan check out one of those streamer kids to get an idea of what it is like before buying. Still, for me, it's an enthusiastic 'YES!" vote.
Nice RTS game, jumped in for a bit. Look forward to the multiplayer update!
When they say this game is a spiritual successor to the Myth games they are NOT lying. 1/10, last 9 points hinged entirely on being able to piss off the tutorial narrator.
Like others have said, if you enjoyed Myth you'll find familiar trappings here. I haven't gotten far enough to comment on the plot but the strategic elements are there.
crashes constantly, cant play for more than a minute. cant seem to submit a ticket through steam as its not their product. messaged the developers but have yet to see an update fixing this. pc specs are above and beyond requirements.
