Nogalious MSX is a retro action platformer that pays homage to the era of classic 2D platforming on 8-bit personal computers. Explore 5 different worlds and go through cozy dungeons in the first title of a trilogy that tells the story of Nogalious, his daughter Mariet, and the evil Darama.

---- 1st post ---- It doesn't work at all. I wasn't able to make it run. At first I've got an error message that asked me to delete and reinstall the game. Tried that a lot of times and nothing changed. Then I tried installing on my boot drive (C:) not my usual game drive (D:) and got a positve response from the program, a "Checking Steam Session... OK". But that's all, game freezes at a "Checking Active Purchase" until the app closes itself. Also no word from support. DRM is awfull already, but a weird unknown, untested and bogus DRM is ten times worse. Add to the bascket an unsupportive developper that has never answered questions on the forum and you get a complete nightmare. Bottom line: avoid at all costs. --------------------------------------- ---- 2nd post --------- I've got a message from support, the server was down, so the DRM wasn't working at all. Now I've got the game running. Still really unconfortable with this kind of DRM. ---------------------------------
***Special thanks go to a special woman in my life for proofing this review. Reported to have been inspired by the native technology within this title’s namesake, Nogalious MSX revels in the former symbolic adventure platforming genre. You play as the regal Nogalious, a hero motivated to liberate the woman with whom he is smitten from the antagonistic Darama. The story derives merit for this title in some regards, however my impression of Nolagious MSX is associated with its minute lack of finesse during play. This work is primarily for informative purposes as many aspects of this title are primarily negative with few positive relations. I feel I must also iterate that I received this Steam keycode from the developers for review purposes.
Here are just a few topics of consideration for this title: Presentation - Given the stated process in which Nogalious MSX was developed, it can be properly deduced that it is inspired heavily by retrospective. Also stated prior is the narrative conscripted with tropisch rudiments of the familiar ‘save the princess’ provocations, this is laudatory disregarding the grammatical errors presented. The visuals presented deliver a clear exhibition of colorful set-pieces and characters, however these elements did appear to lack cohesion to environmental themes a great portion of the time. Overall, this title is merely a numb recreation of the studio’s debut Nogalious title without such features as controller support and achievements on Steam for the sake of retrospective. Gameplay - This variation of LUEGOLU3GO STUDIOS’ Nogalious (though I have no prior experience with the former progra) utilizes standard two-dimensional platforming elements. Stage progression is linked by completing objectives on a single screen in order to advance to the next challenge so as to present a minimum of one imposition at a given time. Losing a life propels the player to the beginning of the screen, while losing all of these essential commodities ejects them to the beginning of the stage. Though optically pleasing with several objectives projecting their solution clearly, many of the instituted trials relay little to no markers for said progression, demanding a ‘trial and error’ approach to puzzles that becomes tedious considering the limited allotment of lives the player receives. The primary gripe included is the dearth floating navigation controls, granting merely middling enjoyment with the title’s principal focus. I can relate to wishing to develop an authentic experience established from reflection, however the exhausting design flaws are conferred early in this title. TL:DR - Nogalious MSX fails in execution when compared to its obvious preceding influences due to its comprehensive level design and floating controls. Beyond these conditions, I would like emphasize that the current version of this title will not function properly for me to attempt to continue, ultimately compelling my negative interpretation. I wish the developers luck in future as always. Thanks for reading. Do you feel this review helped in any way?

Nogalious MSX is a really intriguing oddity in that it plays totally into both being a fairly faithful recreation of an existing title as well as leaning into the limitations of a retro computer system. As such the game is really only for those interested in reliving the MSX, or are such fans of Nogalious that they are looking for a particularly unique challenge. For those unfamiliar with the system, or emulators in general, there is probably too steep a learning curve to garner much enjoyment or replayability.
