Hello Friends, Today i will review the game Cladun Returns: This Is Sengoku! This game is a sequel to another game called Cladun X2. Personally, i have never played the first game, so i will be basing my review only on this game. This game is a Japanese lore based game. Many of the characters and enemies are found in Japanese mythology. For example, the monsters are all Yokoi and the locations the dungeons are located in are actual Japanese historical places. Also, the characters maybe also based on Japanese lore. As for the game itself, it is a dungeon explorer where each area has different maps the player must complete to finish a chapter. The game is split into different chapters, with different maps on each area the player explores that must be completed. Although each map is fixed, they are different locations. There is a mode later the player can unlock that is a random dungeon generator to look for weapons and leveling. This requires fame to unlock. By finishing chapters in the game, the player can unlock new functions in the base town the player stats in. For example, by finishing the first dungeon maps in the game, the player can unlock the shrine that has many functions, then the player can unlock the mailbox that has side quests that help the player earn fame, which is used to unlock more functions also if the player talks to the owl in charge of the castle. There is also co-op play and PVP. Apparently, this allows you to play online. Not sure how this functions as I personally did not see anyone online playing the game when i was on it. Due to the age of the game, the online functionality maybe not be available anymore, unless it is peer to peer playing. If you wish to try it with me, post on this review and it should tell me if someone responded to me, or post on the forum post for the game about it on the specific post about online playing. PROS: - A Japanese lore game with many dungeons to explore. - You can make customizable characters that look different, and can be male or female. - The player can play how they want to, and have different combinations of skills and weapons and can change them on the fly once they open the shrine functionality up. - The player can open additions things in the game including side quests, endless dungeon mode, arena mode, co-op mode, and random mystery dungeon mode. - Players can use a controller to play the game. - This game worked on windows 11 OS, with some crashing experienced. CONS: - Crashing is possible in the game. My game crashed twice when playing it, once when in a middle of a dungeon, and once when selling stuff in the store. It can apparently happen anytime playing. Let the player beware in case they want to purchase the game. - Some of the functions and skills in the game are not discussed fully. The player may be confused about which spell does what. For example, I found out about halfway thru the game Exorcist spell works like a cure for poison and fire damage stuff. - Online functionality may have been shut off, but this has not been confirmed at this point. Testing will need to be done to see if it works. Do I recommend it? The crashing is a concern when buying this game. I did personally experience 2 crashes myself, but this will differ with different pc setups and combinations and could lead to others having more crashing issues. If you want to take a chance then yes, otherwise if there is another mystery dungeon game on steam that is more stable, then the player may want to try that game instead of this one.
While the game could've been okay, it's too buggy to recommend. -Magic Circles are bugged, so effects like mana x 3 don't actually always work. (Rather devastating for the circles where it doesn't, as this governs your overall strength quite a bit and basically weakens them by a lot) -Several titles are bugged and don't do anything, or just the negative part (think of it like modifiers on Weapons and whatnot, +x magic power or whatever) -Random crash to desktop without error, especially great given the 100 floor random dungeons without any saving. Prepare for losing all the things you found, including all money and exp not because you die, but because the game dies. -Wonky hit detection. When soundeffects stack up to really annoying levels, because something hits you once every frame or whatever, it was probably not intended. In general, the sprite designs are little more than a suggestion and often feel like they have little to do with what hits and what doesn't, which also doesn't help. The gamedesign is okay, but honestly not worth it given all the bugs. Too many just annoying elements are already there, things solely existing to be annoying, so add the bugs and it's not really worth it. There are much better games out there.
The best combination of action RPG/JRPG/Rogue-lite that you will find on the market. The downside is that the story is almost non-existent, especially for western audiences. If you want a game that will revolve around you generating and customising generations of characters and switching styles and general JRPG tropes, then this is the game for you. The action RPG elements also deserve significant praise, especially when combined with the mental aspects of building the right strategies for characters and their place in your team.
Another "steam deck verified" game that softlocks near the beginning of the game. Try to enter my characters name and it just sits there after hitting accept. Unfortunate
After being unable to play Cladun X2 due to input issues, I decided to give This is Sengoku a try (purchased it on sale). It was encouraging to see that this game featured controller support and didn't have any screen flicker when I ran it in full screen. I did the first tutorial mission with no problem. Controls were solid, game ran fine, I was having fun. Before doing the second mission I had to create new characters to follow me, which I did. But as I spoke to the character that would start the mission, the game suddenly crashed. When I re-started the game, I saw that at no point had my data been saved and I would have to start over. Now, I had only played about 35 minutes, and I could get back to where I was in significantly less time without having to read tutorial messages again, but I can't play a game knowing it can randomly crash and cause me to lose progress at any moment. Looking for a fix, all I found is that lots of people are having crash issues in a variety of scenarios. It's a shame, as I was enjoying the game until it wouldn't let me play it. Not recommended.
I can't believe i paid about 15$ for this game. It's not that bad but it's not that good, the concept is good but the overall game is a bit disappointing. And the worst is that it uses the same content as the two previous games. Really NIS? Are you that incompetent and useless? I guess so. Gameplay is simple, game isn't that hard but there are some "wtf" moment which will be kind of annoying. Dungeons all looks the same. Magic isn't that fun to use. 4.2/10 - If interested, get only while on sale for about 2$, not more, especially if you have already played the previous titles which are pretty much the same as this one.
I am very torn: the game is beautiful, unfortunately the keyboard does not work on the steam deck and therefore it is not possible to create the characters. If you play on pc I recommend it, but if you have steam deck do not buy it.
I wish I could recommend this game, I really do. It's genuinely quite fun. The problem is that it's also quite crash-prone. In fact, now it's crashing when I attempt to load my save.
