For a game I was playing primarily to experience the 2nd "better" one, I'm pleasantly surprised by how much fun I had. The combat was easily the standout; the Ki Pulse and Stance systems were unique and extremely well executed. Each stance felt viable with obvious strengths and weaknesses. This, alongside the diverse weapon choice and 3 different weight-based armour types, created vast amounts of depth and personal expression. Whilst graphically underwhelming, the art direction for the Yokai, bosses, and Guardian Spirits was amazing. Some bosses were annoying, and some too easy, but they were mostly solid and fun to fight. I also appreciated the unique spin on the Souls-like genre with the mission-based approach. It was executed well, even if some stages dragged. For me, the game's biggest flaw was how easy getting stunlocked was with a light-armour build. Whilst heavy armour granted Poise to resist this, it felt too punishing for lighter armour because fast enemy attacks - that had minimal wind ups to respond to - staggered me, allowing them to chain into combos, and making me cop vast amounts of, otherwise avoidable, damage. Sure, blocking was an option, but these combos would deplete my Ki, leaving me exhausted and open to a killing blow anyways. The lack of reaction time to these light attacks also made it challenging to overcome this by using my greater mobility to dodge them. Overall, Nioh was tons of fun, and it's certainly worth playing both if you're itching for more Souls-like challenges, or you want to maximise the quality of your Nioh 2 experience.
very fun, content rich, and deep (in terms of mechanics, items, story) samurai souls-like except its not like that one other parry slop game
