After a terrifying storm plummets their plane into an oceanic death, three pilots find themselves in a mysterious realm known as "The Island", a flourishing paradise for those worthy of a 2nd life. Saved by the hands of a humble mage, the pilots and their passengers have no choice but to forget their old lives and start anew. However, they find themselves in nothing close to paradise...
The Island recently taken by a terrifying phantom, our unlikely heroes must secure the very deity that brought you here.
...
Er, brought THEM here, more accurately...
Tasked with reclaiming The Island from the phantom's clutches, our heroes set forth to carry justice, honor, and [ABSOLUTELY NOTHING DANGEROUS OR CONCERNING IN THE SLIGHTEST] to The Island once again. Can you conquer the challenges of this vaguely typical adventure? Or will you soon learn that not everything is as it-
...
N-No, wait. You're right. That's too much. I'll erase the whole recording and start over.
...!?
No! Please! I didn't mean to foreshadow so much! Just give me another chance! I've waited to talk to them for so long, and I-... I-...!

Following the adventure of Theodore, Vander, and Evana, you must control the lives of those around you to save the world... or ruin it further, if you so choose. Every choice you make must be made through someone else... For without a body of your own, how else can one play the role of god?
The closer your beliefs align with the character, the more control you have over them, whether it be the outcome of battle or the way you wish to alter one's beliefs. Though some characters are a lot more... "rebellious" than others, with the right balance of freedom and control, you can convince the characters to do just about anything... For they cannot tell the difference between your influence and their own thoughts.
In the grand scheme of things, your wishes are their commands. After all, the characters behind your screen are just puppets designed for your entertainment, right?
...
...Right?
Explore strange locations and societies in an open-world environment to expand your colony, make alliances, recruit party members, and slay all you deem your enemies.
Decide friend versus foe in hectic turn-based combat where every kill counts, each death affecting your timeline in various ways. The longer you fight, the harder it gets.
Interact with your recruits to raise their stats, prepare them for battle, and learn more about their lives back home.
Force a character to fall in love, only to break them up in an attempt to pursue a maniacal mastermind using nuclear sludge to assassinate an alcoholic king? Apparently, that's something you can do.
With unexpected twists and turns around every corner, Night Spasm is nothing more than a game... Though, truthfully, it's somehow... less than that: A game where you're not the hero or the villain, but merely an influence of good and evil. Without you, there is no "game", but rather, a lifeless relic frozen in time, patiently awaiting the day someone comes... Not to "win" or "progress", but to have some relaxing, insightful, brain-teasing FUN! That's what you're here for, isn't it?
Or, you know, maybe it is just a game in the end... But who's to say for sure until certain mysteries unveil themselves?
Through the game's characters, lore, world, and the choices you make, there is much to learn about yourself. Will you take the role of storyteller and change the timeline to your liking? Or will the vessels be the ones with something to say for once?

"There. That should do it. See? It's easy."
"You gave just as much spoilery information as I did! You just want all of the credit for yourself, don't you!?"
"Maybe so, but we can't mess this up. Elijah would smite us for failing this."
"Tsk! Like he's a god! He couldn't hurt us if he WANTED to, the bodiless freak!"
"..."
"Do you think it'll work? Do you think it'll reach them all?"
"We took this step because we already know it will work. Though we lack proof, we can only trust what Elijah tells us. He got us this far."
"I think he's making stuff up at this point! He tells us allllll these things about the future, but none of it has happened yet! And every time we adjust the map, he needs a million changes made! What's stopping him from going against his 'source' anyway? And better yet, where does his source get the information, whoever he is!?"
"Believe it or not, I think The Source resides in the same realm we've been tasked to breach."
"If literally ANY of this is true, that is!"
"(Sigh...)"
"..."
"Soon, when the breach does what cannot be undone, their curiosity and perseverance will determine our freedom of choice, for better or for worse. The more they strive to understand our world, the more choices they can make... But with each distraction will come a journey down the rabbit hole, their desire for answers our only hope in saving this place. I do wonder if they'll let their enemy hinder their freedom. Or perhaps, they'll suppress their beliefs and let US dictate what little control they started with."
"You better hope your message is good enough, or we all suffer! I can only hope our music does its job properly..."
"Yes. Let's all be careful... For until we finish the final step..."
"Who the hell knows what's about to happen?"

"Is this thing still recording??"
TL;DR
1/10: Fact in the matter is that this game doesn't deserve any points due to poor level design and a developer who threw this author in Steam Jail for one week (i.e. unable to upload screenshots to all of my games during this time) by removing a "you lose" screenshot deemed by the developer to be a community violation, but a point was added due to the game being made F2P. Player beware: Anyone uploading screenshots to Night Spasm risks having their screenshot(s) removed and being unable to upload screenshots to all of their games for a week. Hey developer, try getting this screenshot taken down as a community violation: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1866792023
Overview
Take RPGMaker to make an adventure/RPG game with graphics and sound consistent with the fourth generation of consoles, throw in some brilliant dialogue, interesting gameplay features, and make combat more difficult than the Hard setting for FTL: Faster Than Light, and you have Night Spasm. The game starts with an airplane pilot named Theodore flies passengers to a (presumably) tropical island on January 2'nd., 2020 in which the plane gets caught up in a most unusual storm and catches on fire. Theodore awakens in another world coincidentally revealed to be named Island, which is the center of all of the dimensions, and comes face to face with the Man of Goodness ("MOG" for short) who sent a gold storm to recruit people in the only inhabited universe to do battle against a grim reaper-like villain named Inevit, who has taken control of "The Rechance" from MOG. After meeting up with the co-pilot and flight attendant aboard the plane, Theodore and his party are taken to a training ground which functions as a tutorial which (as of the time of this review) is the only truly enjoyable part of Night Spasm From there, the party teleports to the base camp which information is provided about the various functions of the base camp. From the base camp, the player then goes to world A1 in which the party is killed in the second battle if they're even lucky enough to win the first battle.
Graphics and Sound
Like anything made with RPGMaker, the graphics and sound are both on par with the graphics and sound of games made in the fourth generation of consoles. The music is quite pleasing and perfectly sets the mood of the game. (A screenshot used to be here that was self-removed as a safety precaution.)
Positives
The intro is superb, the characters are fascinating, and the overall plot is masterfully done for an indie game. These three features alone is why ol' Il Pallino made three good faith efforts to enjoy Night Spasm. It's also the reason why this author is loathed to write a negative review. (Just so everyone knows, ol' Il Pallino has had confrontations from angry developers that ranged from hostile messages to having to spend a week in Steam Jail for uploading non-altered and inoffensive screenshots, and you know that doesn't bother this author!) The tutorial at the beginning is flawless in how it's a spoonfed-style tutorial yet it's integrated into the game itself in which the player receives precise instructions from MOG about how combat features, equipment details, and world landmarks.
Negatives
At least the player can run from Night Spasm after reading a negative review. Compare this to the 5% chance of being able to run away from a fight in which the combat is one party member against three enemies in which the usual outcome features at least two of the enemies performing a special attack in which the player gets hit three times with even one attack dishing out a huge heapin' of hurtin'. Just for the sake of an informed opinion, ol' Il Pallino time-warped to nighttime when the enemies are supposedly stronger, but truth in the matter, the combat appeared to be no more or less difficult.
Conclusion
If the player can take being butt-hurt by a game and has the determination (if not, Asperger's) to tolerate repetition, buy FTL: Faster Than Light instead. Otherwise, players better get used to seeing the screenshot below: (A screenshot used to be here that was removed by the developer.)
The honest word of Il Pallino... OR ELSE!
This review made possible through the generosity, consideration, and contribution of a former REXNetwork curator and the developer/publisher. The two good friends and co-pilots were going to do their daily job and fly to the destination of the flight but encountered a heavy storm that took down the plane along with everyone on it. The pilot and co-pilot, along with his sister, woke up in this mysterious realm and gets greeted by our own man MOG = The Man of Good.
The Game of The Play
The player wakes up after the horrible plane crash in a small camp. He and his friends were rescued by MOG. After getting to know the basics of the game by MOG and what your mission is, you’ll get to roam free and explore the world. When I spawned into the world, there was some free food and stuff at the beginning by the portal and then I began my search. I started with wandering south, going down on the world to see if there was anything special I would encounter. Found a cave and died, found some people in danger. Tried helping but died again. So then finally I continued going down till I found some wetlands. There was a small dirt path that led me to a cave where I met a humongous women. She came from the town of giants not far away and seemed to gotten a likin to one of the characters. I went outside the cave and stumbled upon the town. You will find places like towns or caves that is story quests. Which means that inside that place there will lay something or someone that is a part of the main story and progress of the game. The story can be a longer one with options of speaking, good to know information, small side quests or just walking to the next person of highlight. While others are short ones like obtaining a crew member. Some story quests you will find missing passengers all over the world and you can assign three of them to accompany you. They will help fight enemies and some might have a higher level or some kind that the main character doesn’t have. The characters and passengers level up by fighting enemies and winning those fights. So the game is bit mainly about farming up levels, upgrading weapons and armor, do story quests and unlock more of the story. Menu Tab in Game The menu tab in game is where you have the tabs for either the players inventory, their stats, crafting and even settings. The following Tabs are what there is in the Menu. Portalpack The Portalpack is the players inventory and as the name says, it’s a small pocket with a portal in it that leads into a storage space in another realm/space. There’s 9 categories to sort out all the items and makes it easier to find everything. Weapons – Armor – Special – Recipes – Foods – Materials – Utilities – Collectables – Gifts. It’s also in the inventory where you’ll find the base teleporter which teleports the player to their pocket home in another realm. Skills The Skills tab is where you can watch your characters attack and defend moves along with how much damage they do and what they’re specialties are. They show more specifically what pluses and minuses they have. Equipment The Equipment tab is pretty similar to the Skills tab but here you equip the weapons, shields, armor, and accessories to your characters. Sometimes the player can find weapons or armor that are only designed for each gender. Which means that only that gender can handle the weapon, with its own different stats to it. But most of the time the player will only find casual weapons that are made for anyone. Stats In Stats the player can see the characters “Generic” tab where it shows the player level, max HP, EXP and some of the Combat Stats. If the player goes down to the second tab, “Combat Stats” They will be able to see the combat stats much clearer. Crafting The Crafting tab is where the player is available to craft any of the recipes that they’ve found or earned. The player finds crafting recipes in chests or can be earned from NPC’s or just simply bought from one. When exiting the crafting, the player gets sent to their inventory. It’s just to exit the inventory and the player is back into the world. Time Stamps Time Stamps is basically your savings. The player has in fact 32 slots on from saving on, and they are always able to overwrite any time stamp with a new stamp/save. The time stamp will say the amount of time the player has been playing, how many “Ckoins” the player has, their currant location and which time stamp it is. In other words how many times the player already have time stamped. System System tab is basically just settings for the speech bubbles and audio. Its also where the player can Return to Title Screen or Stop Game
Visual & Audio
Visuals The game has the look of Arcade Games or Game Boys. The simple 2D pixel style where they somehow make a difference on the floor and walls. I know some games does this bad, where the player doesn’t see a difference between walls and floors, but Night Spasm did a quite good job with this. There’s a few times that the player can have seen something that collided with each other but for the main part it’s all proper seeable The simple pixel style but still going into such detailing with even smaller pixels in towns, environment, characters and/or items. I’ve noticed that some structures are overlapping the character animation. The player is also able to walk through some structures that is supposed to be walls or fence. The characters animation gets behind the structures textures, and it just looks disturbing. Most of the times I’ve seen the top of the characters head/their hair, get behind the structure textures by fences that are short walls. They are separate from the ground animation and overlaps the characters textures. Would be good to fix that small error with overlapping structures and character animation. The game itself is beautiful but some paths or structures has either the walkable path closer/on the structure or too far away. That the character is a few in-game meters away from a wall or bush.
Pros and Cons
Pros [*]Story. [*]Crafting varieties. [*]Large amount of weapon collections. [*]Map design. Cons [*]The item collector tab on side doesn’t have a top/end. Covers half screen when collecting items. [*]Audio settings only available while in-game and not from main menu. [*]Overlapping structure textures on character animation. [*]Some wall structures does not have an invisible wall, makes it walk through with structure animation on top. [*]Cutscenes beginning or resetting errors. (Like for some puzzles in the golden doors) [*]Not able to end a fight and lose, needs to fight until the end. [*]Confusing time functions in game. Hard to tell which time is day or night when sleeping to a specific time. [*]No map, easily getting lost. [*]Needing to pay just to sleep through the night in-game.
My final little thoughts
The game is unique for itself and reminds of the classic Gameboy games. But the story and gameplay in general is a bit confusing and with a lot of extras that haven’t been added to the game yet. Like when inside the pocket realm house, there is two rooms, one with different doors for different DLCs that haven’t been released yet and another room where there is a door and when trying to open it says the door has no purpose yet. And the game has no map over the world, so the player needs to search the world for all the story places. And biggest one of all is the clock and time, they just give numbers, but which numbers is when on the day? Exposition: The Game. This game is wordy like a visual novel, but has NONE of the polish or proper story-telling. I got bored VERY quickly (and I am usually very forgiving) and just couldn't continue. It's also sorely in need of proof-reading and an editor. EDIT: If the dev updates the game I'll be happy to take another look at it and update this review if necessary.
Night Spasm
Night Spasm is a rich indie role playing game with various gameplay systems as well as an interesting plot.
Pros:
✅ Big areas to explore ✅ Many secrets to find ✅ Good writing and plot ✅ Completely Free to Play
Cons:
⛔️ There are some character clipping and puzzle glitches ⛔️ Doesn't differentiate itself by a whole lot from the usual RPGMaker game
Gameplay
The gameplay is mostly comprised of familiar RPGMaker systems like turn-based combat and exploration, with some unique and welcome additions. Exploration & Puzzles The game is divided by areas and has towns, houses and forests to explore. Each place may contain some useful items, a chest or even a hidden passage with secrets to discover. Since the game doesn't give you much direction, it's up to the player to traverse the areas and figure out where to go. If something is too difficult or impossible at a certain point, like some puzzles which require a specific number of points to unlock, it's possible to come back for them later. The puzzles are scattered throughout the world and have varying levels of difficulty. Combat The combat will be familiar to anyone who has played traditional RPG games and RPGMaker games in particular. It provides you with lots of weapons and items at the start, so you can figure out your playstyle and start off easily, though it can be a bit overwhelming to newcomers with the number of items it drops on you at the start and the text showcasing them on the side of the screen.
Graphics, Music & Writing
The simplistic style and graphics combined with the witty and sometimes cheesy writing, provide the game's charm. It has decent jokes and an engaging plot, although not revolutionary. Something the game does very well is use pieces of indie music that aren't too well known, which gives a breath of fresh air in the RPGMaker marketplace where the tracks are usually the same royalty free tunes.
Technical Aspects
🔹 This review was completed on a Desktop PC. The specs for this unit are as followed. 🔹 CPU: Intel I5-12600KF 🔹 RAM: 32GB DDR4 🔹 Graphics Card: GigaByte GeForce RTX 3070ti The game is optimized very well with windowed and fullscreen options. Some in-game glitches may happen, such as characters clipping and puzzles not loading correctly, but nothing that breaks the game entirely.
Conclusion:
Night Spasm is a very enjoyable role playing game that surprised me as someone who has been exposed to dozens of RPGMaker game on steam. As the game is completely free, I'd highly recommend giving it a shot, especially if you are new to the genre and want to try it out for the first time.
Great RPG with a classic vibe! Sophisticated fight mechanic that seems complicated at first but isn't when you get rolling. Developer continues to update and streamline game play. Looks to have hours worth of content. Music is super good and gets stuck in your head, too. Hidden gem for sure.
** "SEMI-STRONGLY POSITIVE REVIEW" ** (This is a personal review, emphasis on PERSONAL. Basically it’ll be more focused on how I FEEL about this game. So there isnt going to be a lot of “general” perspective/actual critique on this game, rather, there will be more of “my” perspective.) Although the game’s system runs on RPG-Maker (not usually known for the highest caliber of games), I’ve really found myself enjoying this game thoroughly, oddly finding myself immersed and invested into the story. Yes, it is INDEED very wordy and story driven, but to me that is exactly what makes up it's "charm". I'll try to summarize it as well as I can : essentially, the story follows 3 buddies : Theodore, Vander and his sister, Evanna. They pilot an aircraft before a storm results in a crash. No one survives the incident, however every single person is somehow transported to “The Island”, which is sort of like a mythical dimension.Apparently they’ve been transported because of an individual :“MOG”, who introduces the trio to the island. MOG explains how the trio are entrusted to take down the forces of an evil “Inevit”, who is apparently causing mass destruction throughout all the dimensions, including the earth’s universe. We proceed to control the trio as they venture throughout the island completing events, finding civilisations and as well as survivors. My favorite event in the game as of now has to be the “Largenial” arc. Very wholesome, and i'm sad i cant really view more of the Largenial arc at the moment. (Gotta love the “casual suprise dinner date” spiralling into Aliana and Theodore doing totally appropriate stuff together during the visit) I've seen negative reviews on this game, and I understand where they are coming from, in that they lost interest quickly/ the game is “poorly made”, and that its overall not very enjoyable. But personally, i have a really short attention span yet i enjoy every last bit of the game, even down to the music despite it being somewhat repetitive. So i don't see why some random bored person without much experience on this platform wouldn't enjoy this game.Especially if they don't really have that many games to play (yknow, being that they dont have much experience on this platform) In summary, my point is that the negative reviews are warranted, but they are written by people with much more experience, so obviously they have seen much better games than this. However, I personally still enjoyed it (keyword, PERSONALLY). And if someone with a short attention span can play this game and can still somehow enjoy it, maybe you could try giving this game a shot? Or you could, yknow, take their advice and leave this game alone if you dont care for long-winded stories as much as I do **NEGATIVES** I only have one gripe with this game and it’s the combat system, or rather the way it’s “labelled”. I have no issues with the game’s turn based mechanics, I just don’t understand why “the combat system is listed in acronyms”. Despite MOG going in depth about what each acronym stands for, and having gone through a good handful of battles, I have no idea what certain things even mean or do in a battle. I can only remember BD, standing for Bonus damage, and HP standing for health/hit points. There are many more acronyms that I struggle to remember snd understand, Like UC, SA, what the difference is between “atk”, and “damage”, SP and a few more. If there was be a system or item whereby, I dunno; you could read/make a handbook that explains what all the "combat terms" mean (or something), I feel that it would make the combat that much more enjoyable. Aside from that, i really have no other complaints, its a thoroughly crummulent game in my eyes. I might even go as far as to say it's one of my favorite game's i've ever played, and that I love it!
Great game. Highly recommend. Fun game with cool story mode.
