Genuinely felt compelled to write a review over how much of a mixed state this game has left me in. The Good + Always good to spend time with this cast of characters, the usual hijinks and goofy-ness don't disappoint + The story legit took me by surprise at how good(??) it was, may have shed a tear at the final CG on the true ending + Nepgear again proving herself to be a more capable and likeable protag than her sister could ever hope to be + Shangahi Alice and Higurashi both top-tier character designs and fun movesets that reflect their respective roots Unfortunately that's where the good runs dry cause oh boy buckle up... The Bad - Except some endgame levels almost every dungeon is more or less the same 3/4 areas copy-pasted - Walking around Planeptune seemed cool at first but the place is unnecessarily large, it just feels empty and soulless - Checkpoints in levels are really inconsistent, sometimes they will be right next to one-another - The new combat system they tried is horribly slow, clunky and grating, hit detection seems really whack - Items and status skills aplenty but most fights are over so quick you'll never find any use for them - Very limited pool of enemies it seemed which meant you'll see the same things reskinned a lot more than usual, I miss the weird tetris things from previous games... - Weird mob-placement that makes chirper quests a hassle and led to many wasted forbidden twigs - Arena battles feel really toned down from previous games, S rank fights were a bit of a joke difficulty-wise - Equipment feels like it doesn't scale very well as the game progresses, you'll find yourself getting gear from chests that you could already buy a chapter before etc - Endgame balancing is all over the place, Neptral Tower pretty much got my whole cast to Lv99 in the first 20 floors and I just found myself running through the rest once I realised no encounters were worth the time At the end of it all I'm not even mad... just sad... it's been a lot of years since my last Nep game and I was excited to see how the series had progressed in that time... Not much it seems sigh...
Argh, the gameplay is fun, the story's surprisingly good after a slow beginning (and it's slightly confusing), and the dialogue and ENG VAs are great as usual, but the PC Port is somehow the inferior one. Only play if you're a Neptunia fan imo, and for everyone else just get the Switch version. The gameplay and the environments feel like they're still in beta. The game has a community-made patch to solve some of the physics issues, such as free-floating hair, but it only goes so far. Maho, the deuteragonist of the game who accompanies you the entire game,
who is the titular Sister you also fight the entire game as Grey Sister AND is arguably the hardest boss in the game
is only playable on the Switch version. Shanghai Alice and Higurashi are only playable on a second playthrough, which takes like 30ish hours to get to. Environments are sparse and empty despite being beautifully modeled. We even get to walk around a very lovely, expansive Planeptune that's sparse and devoid of anything interesting.
Great game overall, would recommend highly over the other games, ON GAMEPLAY ONLY. story mode is eh, neptunia rebirth's had significantly better stories, and honestly i think the turn based combat on neptunia specifically is actually pretty enjoyable, i just prefer this open movement combat system more. However, if you are just buying it for that, buy neptunia Game maker instead. Game maker is essentially the same game and combat system, except more...crisp or dialed in movement. This game can be a bit scuffed, often times your attacks, specifically uni;s laser simply phasing through enemies entirely and not having hit detection. Its not exactly that common, but its not uncommon either. Story is kinda annoying, centered around Vtubers and social media, so definitely dont buy if you want the best story for a neptunia game, again, if thats what youre after go play the rebirth games.
