Im so unsure here. Might change the review later I wanted a Trauma Team/Center inspired game and this is kind of that, but it takes a Wario Ware approach to the gameplay. you perform rapid-fire treatments on a series of patients instead of more involved operations involving a specific patient. The peppy story and tone are... fine i guess? I like the artwork? Im just having trouble getting involved with how simple and quick the treatments go
Okay, already the most sharply presented game I have seen this year, every single second of this game snaps, feels fantastic and the core premise is really, really good (and silly in the best way). Action paramedic Active Time Battle System meets cooking mama panic with a hilarious visual novel component (and a dolphin). Buy the damned thing. It rips.
The shounen EMT game to fill the void left by Trauma Team It plays a little more like if Wario Ware was time management (think Heart's Medicine) Maybe a patch short of complete
Here to help! In Neo Harbor Rescue Squad, you play as a newbie joining the Rescue Squad in Neo Harbor. Whether or not this is his actual name, he is referred to as Rookie. Rookie is stoked to be a part of the Rescue Squad and, after assuring you’re not there to snoop around, you’re welcomed onto the team and taken to train out in the field. The Rescue Squad team is pretty small, but they’re tight knit. There’s Queenie Tam the hotheaded, but caring captain who trains and accompanies Rookie on most calls; Mei Mei the lead disapatcher and expert in communications who has a pension for (bad) jokes, and Finn the talking dolphin and genius engineer who loves to roast those around him. Yep, a talking dolphin. Later on, you do meet the Chief and get a new recruit. Little did Rookie know what he was walking into. You wouldn’t think an emergency response team wouldn’t have these problems, but the Rescue Squad sadly do. It turns out that Neo Harbor’s news reporter Betty Woo has made it her job to curb stomp the Rescue Squad’s reputation while uplifting the Fire Department’s reputation. She never broadcasts the good that the Rescue Squad does, only the squabbles or twisting the truth with editing or just plain slander, while she never reports on actions that would harm the Fire Department’s reputation. This makes the Fire Department the darlings of Neo Harbor and the Rescue Squad black sheep as they’re struggling with trying to get more funding and citizens just not really wanting you there. This also has a knock on effect of there being a rivalry between the Rescue Squad and the Fire Department. So, throughout the game, you’ll get to see the Rescue Squad’s journey of trying to improve their reputation, dealing with Betty Woo’s slander, seeing the amusing rivalry between the two emergency response teams, and getting to the root of a mystery of why Betty Woo is doing this. All while they’re dealing with the various emergencies that get called in and getting closer as a team the longer they’re working together. Now onto the gameplay! Neo Harbor Rescue Squad tells its story through its visual novel segments and there are dialogue choices here that will pop up every so often. Depending on the situation, they’re used to see if you’ve been paying attention, to help convince citizens to let you help, or just choosing what Rookie will say. Most of these do have a right answer and while some are obvious, some are also tricky. Before you get to a scene, once an emergency call comes in for Mei Mei to dispatch you, you are also sent to the map screen to select the destination first. While at first this seems to only be a design choice to help you visualize the town locations, there are points where you have to pick which emergency to do first. Don’t worry, this is purely to pick which one you want to do first and not another test. Plus, there are little blurbs giving you a preview on what’s to come and some can be quite funny. Anyway, once you’re on the scene you’ll be faced with a lot of aspects to take into consideration. Using the useful tech the Rescue Squad has, you have to constantly triage your patients to determine who to help first. After all, you can only do one treatment on one patient at a time. You have to take into account everyone’s health, the treatments they need, the meters on those treatments and the damage they’ll take when they’re fully depleted and restart, how much a treatment will heal, if someone is close to having no health left, and remembering there may be multiple screens to a scene. Not to mention how long a treatment takes, if it’s a complex treatment that requires 2-4 treatments back to back, and if there’s any blocked entryways that you need to break down or open. It’s a lot to take in, but it is easier than it sounds. Plus you do get Shields when you go into Act 2, which basically shields a patient from damage for a couple seconds. Though they are limited so it doesn’t hurt the difficulty of the game. It’s no surprise that treatments here are all minigames. They all vary depending on the treatment type, but they all tale a simple, fast-paced approach that share basic controls and only give you hints on what you need to do (similar to Warioware). You’ll be doing things like flushing someone’s eye out with the thumbsticks, defibrillating them by pressing the trigger buttons when the indicators are in the highlighted area, mashing the button prompted to stop bleeding, taking glass out of someone’s arm, or scrubbing the gunk off of someone’s arm to disinfect it just to name a few. All minigames take a certain amount of time to do and will either have a timer or a certain amount of times you can hurt the patient in to determine whether you passed or failed the treatment. There are also non-treatment minigames like the ones that let you gain access to a blocked area or to prep the ambulances. The game does also adjust the difficulty of these minigames through adjusting the timer length, how many times you can hurt the patient, how many inputs you have to do (just by one or two), and how fast a key aspect of it is. Once you complete a scene, you’ll be graded by how well you did and how long it took. I quite liked and enjoyed both the story and the gameplay. The story is lighthearted and fun, the characters were a delight to know and talk to, and I wanted to get to the bottom of the mysteries this game presents. This game does a good job with its reveal, giving good hints and having the reveal still be satisfying if you guessed it. Despite the annoyances I had with the gameplay, I liked it a lot. It did well adding strategy and difficulty while keeping the minigames fast-paced. Personally, none of the scenes were too stressful until you get to the end game. Which sadly did harm my enjoyment, but can be remedied with patches. There are a few minigames that aren’t as clear, which can cause confusion, tricky due to how the minigame is, or bugged a bit. Like the smelling salts minigame is impossible unless you have the max amount of time. I did notice that the minigames where you press both triggers would often not detect my inputs. If a patient had 2+ injuries and you successfully did the treatment with a nearly depleted meter, it will still cause damage to the patient before it’s cleared. I did also find the scenes in the last chapter impossible to not have failed patients.
Verdict
Despite some annoyances, I enjoyed Neo Harbor Rescue Squad. I didn’t know what to expect aside from the minigames, which I knew I would like, and I was pleasantly surprised with the fun storyline and how it progressed. I did also enjoy the minigames, despite the annoyances that happened, and liked how you have to strategize who to treat and what to treat first on the triage screen. I was a bit unsure about the price for this game, but I do think it’s worth picking up. The length turned out to be perfect both for the story and making sure the gameplay doesn’t get too repetitive (taking breaks and playing the game over a couple days does help also). All in all, I do recommend Neo Harbor Rescue Squad if the focus on the fast-paced minigames is up your alley and ready for a fun paramedic drama storyline. Minigames are mostly well-done, though some of them can be quite confusing with what you're supposed to until you try a few times. They're mostly fun to play. Dialogue is awfully cringe and painful to read. Eventually I started skipping through it to just play the minigames. I see the effort and polish put into the game, but the overall result is kinda disappointing. I think this would work better as a party game where you can compete with others for who gets the best score in the minigames. As a singleplayer game that lasts a few hours and has no replayability, it's not worth the pricetag.
Really fun game. You join a rescue squad and have to do quick mini games to try to save people. The games are fast and don't really tell you how to do them in detail, just shows basic controls. Figure it out fast! The story is fun and the art style is great. I am loving this game so far!
Neo Harbor Rescue Squad is a collection of medical microgames with triage multi-tasking management and visual novel scenes in between - if you're not a fan of hectic microgames, you might struggle to enjoy (or possibly complete) the game. ...If you are a fan, though, this is an enjoyable game! The microgames themselves have (almost) enough variety for the 8-ish hour playthrough, choosing the order you treat patients and whether you use shields or not is an interesting challenge, and the narrative gives the game more context. The story is straight-forward, though the main characters were sweet, and I did appreciate seeing the scrappy emergency services doing their best even when their efforts weren't appreciated. Then there's Neo Harbor itself, a lovely city brought to life by its varied locations - I wish I had more time to stop and enjoy the isometric rooms while I treated patients! I found the game as a whole relatively smooth to play through, not too difficult but with high scores to aim for. Playing made for a relaxing break, even when in narratively and mechanically tense situations. That changed for me in the final emergency, which spiked in both difficulty and length. This was also where I encountered a few bugs (though likely because I was returning to the main menu and coming back in - quitting the game fixed this). Others might enjoy the rise in difficulty at the end of the game as a send-off, I just would have liked more of a ramp up to it.
I absolutely love this game. It makes me feel like i'm playing trauma center but with more lighthearted art. Pros: -good story line -cute art-fun minigames Cons: -repetitive music -lack of time to see what buttons you need to push I would definitely recommend this game!
It's a fun little game! It's sort of like a medical wario ware. You'll be tasked with prioritizing and saving people at a scene by completing several mini-games for each person. The mini-games are pretty easy for the most part, but you will probably fail each at least once while you figure out what it wants. The story has been pretty good so far. It's about a slacking fire department and the rescue squad picking up slack but getting no credit. I could definitely see the story staying interesting throughout. Overall, its a pretty fun little game!
