About
Nelly Cootalot is the stupidly named pirate adventurer with a heart of gold. Uncover corruption and wanton punning in this HD revival of a classic freeware adventure game.
The revenue of the game - after fees and taxes are deducted - will go to the RSPB, a British charity taking care of our feathered friends (birds).
Nelly Cootalot, fearsome pirate and lover of tiny and adorable creatures, is charged by the spirit of a dead buccaneer to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a fleet of birds known as spoonbeaks. Her adventure will bring her face to face with the nefarious Baron Widebeard as she uncovers corruption and wanton punning in the Barony of Meeth.
Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy! is your opportunity to:
Rescue endangered and unusually named wildfowl.
Acquire morally dubious items on behalf of minor aristocrats.
Intercept the private correspondances of a daredevil pilot.
Come to the aid of downtrodden supernatural beings.
Be confused by obscure colloquialisms.
Borrow facial hair from long-dead pirates.
Wantonly misuse the word 'borrow'.
Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy! was originally released by Alasdair Beckett-King hundreds of years ago in 2007. The game started out as a birthday present for his girlfriend and got wildly out of hand. In 2016, he even made another Nelly game called Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet.
The HD remastering of Spoonbeaks Ahoy! brings the original game back to life, with a streamlined interface and loads more pixels and voice over (!) for the first time. Read the details below!
Alasdair has been tweaking and polishing (and breaking and fixing) Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy! for many months now. 1920x1080 HD resolution and a FULL VOICE OVER in English are the obvious highlights. Here is the full list of the improvements we've made to the original 2007 game.
The game now runs in full 1920x1080 HD, (as well as other widescreen resolutions). This is flipping massive compared to the tiny, square original graphics (see trailer video).
Extremely cheap voice acting by Alasdair Beckett-King, real Nelly and literally no one else. Think of it as a director's commentary where he got to do a load of dodgy accents. (Yes, this feature CAN be switched off.)
Full support for macOS and Linux as well as all recent Windows systems.
Streamlined point & click interface.
Improved launcher app.
Bad jokes replaced with good jokes (we wish).
New "business" model
We've put a lot of work into this remastered edition. However, Spoonbeaks Ahoy! is a shorter game than „The Fowl Fleet“, and the original was freeware. So we've decided to make this release super, super-cheap.
The revenue of the game - after fees and taxes are deducted - will go to the RSPB, a British charity taking care of our feathered friends (birds).

In 2013 Alasdair ran a successful Kickstarter to fund a new stand-alone Nelly game (Nelly Cootalot – The Fowl Fleet). With the support of over 1000 backers, Alasdair teamed up with Application Systems Heidelberg in 2014. With ASH on board, the project rapidly grew in scale, adding cross-platform support, text localisation, German voice acting and tons more animation in glorious High Definition.
The Fowl Fleet isn't a sequel to Spoonbeaks Ahoy! It is a new Nelly story and it is not necessary to play one to understand the other.
The budget for the new game grew from the modest Kickstarter haul to a six figure sum, with a team of 45+ people across 4 countries. Blimey, we've been busy!

Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy!
Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy is a point and click adventure game by comedian Alasdair Beckett-King. You play as Nelly Cootalot, a pirate on a mission to find the spoonbeaks, birds who have gone missing from their island home. I thought the puzzles were a little challenging but generally fair. The inventory object puzzles were tricky in a couple of places but pretty logical. I struggled a little bit with the cryptogram, but I was able to solve it. The interface lets you switch the letters on the screen, without having to write anything down, which made the puzzle less frustrating. I struggled the most with the final puzzle. The in-game hint system just highlights hotspots, so if you need additional hints you need to look up a guide. The story isn't very complex, but the witty writing and charming characters more than make up for it. The game is very funny, and I kept wanting to replay the conversations to see all the different dialogue options. Nelly is a great protagonist: funny, clever, and kind despite being a pirate at heart. I enjoyed the music, hand-drawn art style, and voice acting. There are only two voice actors, and Alasdair Beckett-King is playing almost all of the characters, but the performances were great and all of the characters felt really distinct. If you tab out while playing the game, the background music starts playing the same note over and over again. It fixes itself once you get back to the game. The Steam overlay also doesn't work, as the mouse stays on the game screen and won't interact with the overlay window. Those were pretty minor issues; otherwise, the game worked fine. Overall, the first Nelly Cootalot game is a lot of fun. It was really funny and I enjoyed the puzzles, even when they were difficult. The game is short but pretty cheap and the proceeds go to RSPB, a bird charity. 9/10
Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy! HD is a construction kit game. The "developer" used the mediocre Adventure Game Studio video game construction kit, filling out input forms/using premade level design tools. While they did provide some of their own assets, these aren't exactly AAA quality game assets... when developers aren't able to use industry level game engines, often they're unable to do the other parts of game development well, either. A strong argument can be made that construction kits like Adventure Game Studio should never be used to make games for profit, as the "developer", Alasdair Beckett-King Application Systems Heidelberg has done here. These construction kits are intended to teach people some of the basic principles of game development, and to make small demos to pass around with friends. They're not intended to replace to actual work of real, professional game developers. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers. Certainly it's undeniable that the voice acting in this game is of professional standard... unfortunately that's the only part of the game that is. There's a charming and whimsical family friendly story about a pirate in comical circumstances... so yeah, hold on to your seats... Adventure Game Studio is designed to make ripoffs of Monkey Island, which is about a pirate in comical circumstances, and yet here, we see Adventure Game Studio being used to make a ripoff of Monkey Island, which just so happens to coincidentally be about a pirate in comical circumstances. I hope the sequel to this is about a bunch of high school students who get stuck in a maniacal mansion full of evil tentacles or something. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game features mostly static, barely animated 2D images, the kind of thing you expect to see in browser/flash games. While the artwork itself, while mediocre, might be considered passable, the visual presentation here is negligible, it might as well be a slideshow or a Youtube video. Pac-Man, Space Invaders and Asteroids had more advanced animation and visuals going on than this game does. The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just point and click stuff like a browser/Flash game. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here. The very poor quality of this game puts it squarely on-par with ancient 1990's Flash/Java games, and given it's 2024 (and this was released not so far back in 2019), gamers and the industry expect and deserve better than this kind of low effort shovelware. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 11 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy! HD is relatively cheap at $2 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
its a short game fun adventure and cool story <3
Fun prequel to Nelly Cootelot - The Fowl Fleet, where we first meet all the main characters of the game world while trying to save some mysteriously missing birds. It's cute with some interesting puzzles. Playtime depends on how much time you spend on solving those puzzles. The game also has well-done voice overs. We dont notice at all that most of the characters are voiced by the same person. Great little game. I definitely recommend. NB: Achievements dont work on Linux.
very good for free. can recommend it.
The intro of a creator was unnecessary in my the only valid humble opinion around here. He nailed voicing over characters. Why the warning lol ? Funny guy. I mostly struggled with technical part, wanted to have window mode, not available, had to force it but visuals are not properly resized. So decided to play it as it was offered in fullscreen but then tearing was an issue so the only working solution was to make it fullscreen "window" and that fixed the tearing. From a game play side the only complain is that when I mouse over there is no indication I can interact with object or pick it, no icon of any sort, yes there is a name of something AT THE BOTTOM but with fullscreen its not that obvious with white font at some locations. I don't really see any point in bashing technical side or game play side of this lil game for simple reason: you have full paid work teams not able to deliver or make basic things you expect in such games. Other then that enjoyed this little game ♥
I kept reading the subtitle as "SpooKbeanS Ahoy", so imagine my surprise when I learned the game is about birds.
An absolutely adorable little point and click adventure game! I love the story, the jokes made me smile, and the animation is charming. Most of the puzzles make logical sense (minus one). It's short, but definitely worth playing. Perfect for a relaxing night of gaming. I can't wait to start the sequel!
Enjoyable
