VN horror done properly
A game about a frog obsessed with female legs and ghosts playing poker in a huge mansion… [strike]wait that’s not what this game is about at all who gave me this script[/strike] The first thing people may want to know about anything horror related is how scary it is. Let me start off by saying that I’m a complete weakling when it comes to horror, with Corpse Party freaking me out to the point of being unable to play it at night. So when it came to Rinjin (Neighbor), a kinetic visual novel no less, I decided that I wanted to go all in. I played it after midnight, in a dark room, and with headphones on. I even hooked up my friend on screen share so we could experience it together. Without spoiling anything, all I can say is that at times this game gets really damn creepy, but it was honestly the most fun I’ve had in a long time. The reason for that is because the strength of this game lies in its presentation. As advertised, the somber colouring of the art mixed with the dreary music carries with it a tone of terror that goes beyond what any jumpscare on its own could do. That’s not to say Rinjin doesn’t have any of those, because it does, but they’re few and far between, and when they do occur they’re either predictable or simply emphasising the mood. However, as the focus is on the presentation and plot, it means that the characters themselves take a bit of a backseat role. They’re the ones carrying the plot forward, but at the same time they’re a bit insignificant in the face of how beautifully constructed the rest of the game is and what you’re actually focusing on. Now, the story and mystery itself is laid out in a way that makes it easy to follow. At first it may seem a bit convoluted with all the names of character you never actually end up personally meeting, but since the game clocks in on around 6h on autoplay it never becomes much of an issue. How short the game is might be an issue to some, I know that I expected it to be at least twice the length it was, yet the pace of the story is quite rapid and it fits the scope of the narrative without dragging it out. Another thing that is worth bringing up is that some things are either seemingly intentionally left unexplained or indirectly answered. Me and my friend both had some unanswered questions once the credits rolled, but at the end the major plot points were tied up, and that’s likely all that matters. To sum it up, if you enjoy the unhurried tempo of Japanese horror and want something that can get genuinely eerie at times, I can’t recommend this visual novel enough. While it occasionally can become a little predictable (I was almost spot on with what the main conflict was around the midpoint of the story) I don’t actually mind it too much since you’ll be too caught up with immersing yourself in the ambience and pondering about all the other little details to really care about it. I still do wish it would’ve been a bit longer than it was, because I think that the ending, while not exactly rushed, was tied up far too quickly for its own good. Some things would’ve also benefited a lot from the extra development, particularly some of the more neglected minor plot points. At its current price point of 12.5€, a short game such as this may not be worth it for everyone, but games like this are also rare to come by on Steam. I even backed it on Kickstarter and I don’t regret it one bit, despite the minor flaws it has. It’s definitely a gem, and if you’re still unsure you can look to pick it up on a sale in the future.
Neighbor
I lloved this game. It's been a while I've been so excited after the playthrough. First of all, unfortunately, I can't say I played many horror visual novels. Are there really many of them? I'd definitely buy some. I always enjoyed horror films, that amazing feeling of fear. I should warn immediately that I'm easily scared, so maybe you can't make an objective opinion about how scary this game is based on my review. But oh my, I WAS scared! At least, this game was definitely quite intense and gripping. I played alone, at night and was so frightened that I actually had to invite my two cats to stay with me in my room. When I had to come and pull away the curtain to shut the open window before going to bed aaahhh that WAS spooky. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1552545069 The very idea that you can be in such a dangerous situation at your own home is very disturbing. My home is my castle. That's the way it really should be. The place where I can relax and hide from anything negative in this world but when something that terrifying happens in your nook, the very idea of the story is horrifying. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1552545027 That eerie atmosphere is also created thanks to fitting music (those sounds were really unsettling) and dark gorgeous visuals. Everything is truly great about this game! Oh, and of course the best part about it—it's fully voiced. All voice actors were so appealing. The game has different types of characters and all of them are so skilfully revealed by their voice actors. It was such a pleasure! You know, at first I even thought that the game might be a bit expensive as many reviewers complained about its length but after listening to that voice acting it became quite obvious —the game definitely deserves that price! The English translation is excellent. I'm not a native speaker so maybe I missed smth but I didn't see any typos (well, if to be too meticulous, there was once no space after the full stop). I could actually add some other tiny complaints. The game crashed twice when I tried to enter a backlog, so I stopped doing it. I didn't really need it so it was ok for me. And it was weird but when I used F12 making screenshots if there was a voiced sentence it was pronounced again; if it was just a narrative sentence, its Japanese version appeared at the bottom of the screen. That's not even an issue, just some strange feature about the game. As I mentioned, some players thought the game was short. I'd definitely wouldn't mind it being longer, such a pleasant experience it was! But you know, 30 chapters is not that short! As for the story itself, there were complaints about the predictable plot. That was even funny. After I read about it and started playing the game I kept thinking what exactly would be foreseeable and I always had several options in my mind, so as a result it still was interesting to learn which my prediction was actually true xD https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1552544945 What I also loved a lot about the game—it wasn't just a scary story. It was very interesting from different points of view. For example, it was nice to learn about Japanese traditions and some cultural aspects of their life, like introducing yourself and giving gifts to your new neighbors. Beside being scary (at least for me) it was even funny sometimes. There were really nice jokes that made me laugh. It created such a strange contrast. And finally there was a love storyline which was so sweet. So, this game offers you a bunch of intense emotions. I definitely recommend it! Happy Halloween, everyone! 🎃

[th]Find more in a Reading Nook [/th]

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1602490781 (!?)

Genre
Eine Kinetic Horror Visual Novel
Story
Was steckt dahinter?
Gameplay

Follow Main group
Follow Second group
A pretty good horror VN. The English was pretty much flawless and very well translated, and the voice actors were awesome. This, combined with the fitting soundtrack, made the VN a pleasant experience. I don't scare very easily at all, but there were one or two moments where things got a bit eerie. Despite not being terrified while sitting on the edge of my seat, the presentation was enough to keep me engaged and interested. Recommend picking it up on sale as I did, as I don't think it's worth the money for the price it is currently at due to the short length and minimalistic content. But it is worth a read for sure.
Simple but compelling horror story. Bit on the shorter side, but you can pass a few evenings reading this. My only gripe about the experience is that the story features very stereotypical okama characters getting handsy with a character that is clearly uncomfortable with the situation. Kudos to the localization team for the really well done translation and editing, reading this VN was very enjoyable.
Neighbor is stylish, spooky, and very fun! It runs a bit on the short side, but I had more fun spending two hours playing Neighbor than I would have had watching a movie.
A rather short but interesting Horror story. With 2 likeable leads and a nice conclusion. In terms of how scary this game is. I'd say it's creepy and unnerving but not too scary. No jump scares (at least I don't see them as jump scares, imo) and this game knows how to create a good tension. The artwork is very nice, I enjoyed it. My biggest con, i'd say that it was a bit too short. I finished the game in almost 2 and a half hours and that includes it's DLC. But even then it was very enjoyable. Definately try it out.
A simple mystery tale without many surprises but enjoyable to read nonetheless. The text is nicely written, building tension when it's due and the characters interactions have a good flow to them. Its well paced, never boring or wasting any time to move forward. The presentation follow the purest tradition of sound novel : emphasis on the text by having it occupies the entire screen (NVL style), emphasis on the sound atmosphere and sound effects, minimalist illustrations (with occasional beautiful b/w CG). It could have been done better in the sound effects department but all in all, the presentation serves its goal right : carrying its story by accompanying it with an eerie atmosphere.
