Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden honestly became one of my favorite tactical games because it manages to mix serious post-apocalyptic storytelling with a world full of mutant animals carrying guns — and somehow it completely works. What hooked me immediately was the atmosphere. The world feels ruined, dangerous, and strangely beautiful at the same time. Exploring abandoned cities, overgrown highways, broken facilities, and forgotten bunkers gave the game this constant feeling of uncovering the remains of humanity long after everything collapsed. I also really liked how exploration blends into the tactical gameplay. Instead of jumping directly from mission to mission, you move through semi-open areas scavenging resources, finding lore, and carefully scouting enemies before fights. That setup made encounters feel more personal and strategic because I was constantly deciding how to approach situations instead of just running into combat. The stealth mechanics are honestly one of my favorite parts. Picking off isolated enemies quietly before starting a full fight feels incredibly satisfying, especially because the game can become brutally difficult if you accidentally pull too many enemies at once. There were multiple moments where one bad decision turned my carefully planned ambush into a complete disaster. Combat itself feels really solid too. Positioning, overwatch, mutations, and resource management all matter a lot, and the game constantly punishes careless decisions. Every successful fight genuinely felt earned for me because the game refuses to let you play recklessly for long. The characters are also surprisingly memorable. Bormin and Dux have great chemistry, and the mix of dark humor, cynicism, and emotional moments helped the world feel much more alive. The idea of mutant survivors trying to navigate the ruins of humanity could have easily felt ridiculous, but the writing actually gives the setting a lot of personality. I also appreciated that the game doesn’t overstay its welcome. The pacing stays pretty focused, and the story constantly moves forward without drowning itself in endless filler content. That said, the difficulty spikes can definitely feel brutal sometimes, especially early on when resources are limited and your squad isn’t fully upgraded yet. The RNG can also occasionally decide your perfectly planned strategy deserves immediate punishment. But honestly, that tension is also what made victories feel so satisfying for me. Surviving difficult encounters with barely any health left created some genuinely memorable moments. For me, Mutant Year Zero is one of the most underrated tactical strategy games out there — challenging, atmospheric, surprisingly emotional, and filled with just enough mutant chaos to keep every fight interesting.
No too tedious. What did it for me and convinced me to quit when i singled out an enemy and killed it, his "friends" got alerted and I just run away. They stayed at the place I killed the enemy and did not move for 10 turns, while I was geting further and further. Even 10 screens away I was in combat mode. Now that's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
В целом кому нравится геймплей XCOM может быть понравится. Лично мне зашло, немного душно с тем что в идеале сохранятся надо, т.к. бывали вылеты
Completed the campaign. Worth the buy. on to the DLC now.
16 hours in and I had to look up a guide because I couldn’t kill anything at level 52. Come to find out you have to use silent weapons exclusively and there is no way to farm exp or money (scrap). Screwed myself early on and didn’t even know it because nothing in this game tells you: ‘hey, don’t scrap those terribly weak silent weapons’. Games that allow the player to screw themselves without foreknowledge suck.
So far, I'm enjoying this game a lot. Yes it does have elements from XCOM, but that just goes to show how much influence that game has that people are willing to borrow the idea but, not only does it work, but it gives people ideas for games. So it fits my game style perfectly. Love the soundtrack. Love the sneaking around because that, too, is my type of play style. Another thing XCOM doesn't do that this game does, is ambush. You can ambush or cancel ambush to change your mind and get into a better position or run away completely. 10/10.
The story is pretty dumb, and the encounter design is bland. I don't care about any of the characters because the dialogue is so cliched and juvenile. Weak showing from every corner except the visuals.
