Experienced on the Meta Quest 2
You can view my initial impressions review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/3_pp7C5wCYg I had fun playing this game. It is a music rhythm game, but it's closer to the drumming games in VR than it is to Beat Saber VR. In fact, you can decide to improvise and jazz it up instead of following along the prescribed beatmap. You can easily hear your own playing and hear how beautifully (or more likely how terribly) you're playing. I believe there are currently 16 songs total included, with easy to normal to hard to extreme difficulty. You basically shoot notes to play the notes. By default, you have a laser pointing to help you hit the targets. However, even with the laser, it's a very challenging game. You can hold notes, bend notes, & play dark notes (shoot away from target) as well as play single notes or 2 note chords (double stop, dyad, or interval). On the highest difficulties, things get very difficult as notes will fall from all over the place with several combinations that seem almost impossible. Staying on target becomes challenging, even with a laser. There's also a free play mode where you can just jam with the musical palette available. You can also turn off scoring or fail mode. You can also make your own custom song (but I did not try this feature). Game is running on the Unreal Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting steady 90 fps. I did not experience any serious issues or bugs. I was able to play comfortably seated. I had fun. I recommend this game to anyone who is musically talented or likes to tinker around with music. It's a new kind of instrument basically where being a good shot pays off. Rate ?/10.
Please note: I received a free Steam key through the Steam Curator Connect program. Another super polished VR rhythm game? Wrong. It's a super polished rhythm AND pitch game. I was surprised to see and hear this game. I learn musical instruments quickly enough, even studied music at School many, many years ago. I have hope that I will be able to master the toughest levels of play here. There are also more accessible options of play, but I turned them off, because I have an over inflated opinion of my own skill level. This game is hard, but it's amazingly rewarding when it slots in just so. Also, GLaDOS makes a guest song appearance. Definitely worth checking out.
Musical Range is a paid VR musical instrument game. It worked on my HTC Vive and Index system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. Has a small quantity of music preinstalled. You can manipulate the notes with your controllers. Has a rhythm competitive game where you match the falling notes. Has a global leaderboard. Has a Free form mode, where you can just jam. Buy this, if you like making music. I got a free key for this from the Steam Curator program. ViVE VR curator group
I've been following this game for a while. I first tried the demo and it was pretty fun, and after the updates since then I think that it's a really solid rhythm game. The controls are easy to understand, it's just shoot the right notes at the right time. The ability for custom songs is always a good thing, because it allows for so much more fun to come from playing. Would recommend if you enjoyed Audica or Beat Saber. I'm adding this section after a good bit more play time, and this game is still one of, if not my favorite VR music games (and not just because I keep on beating everyone's scores lol). The devs keep on adding new songs and some modifiers, making the game easier to keep coming back to. The recently added Shuffle mode is awesome for someone like me, being someone who can never decide what song they want to play, and the song variety is really nice too. I personally lean more towards the upbeat, happier songs, but I also love a good rock song, which Musical Range has both of and more. And the ability to make custom songs. All in all, play this game.
A very unique take on VR rhythm game genre: using pistols to hit notes, while swinging your arms to change their pitch. After the recent 1.6.0 update, the gameplay has become very pleasant and easy to pick up; previously, I used to have some issues with keeping a proper pitch of the notes, but now it feels like everything's under my control. The developers themselves are open to any suggestions, and they are very active on their discord server.
Fun rhythm game, feels like you're an active participant in the music. Updates have improved the gameplay and I feel like high level play will be quite satisfying. Different from other VR rhythm games in the market, but is focused more on mechanics and timing than movement/dancing so dont expect beat saber/synthriders style feel - this is it's own thing.
