Vainsane always finds some original ideas for a visual novel, even if they are pretty short, this one about 30 minutes or so. There are 3 endings with no narrative changes in the middle as usually, two of them were rather similar with no ending panels (again). Mota reunites with his 2 good friends, but they conspire to get their revenge as they suspect that he killed their sister or love interest. Being faithful to the brand, the story is not truly resolved regardless of which ending you get, as far as I can tell the main "mystery" of the game is not contextually supported with evidence, and is left for the player to speculate on. I noticed this pattern with this developer, he loves going for ambiguous endings, which you know, sometimes leaving the mystery unresolved can be a good thing, or maybe not. The writing was a little better than some of the previous games, not nearly as confusing, you pretty much stuck with these 3 characters so luckily the dev did not go off the rails again. I enjoyed the aesthetic as usually, the first half of the game had some nice motion in the backgrounds and enough panel variety. That said, the second half of the game (the interrogation) takes place on one screen, so it can get a little stale. I did notice a bit of nuance in the dialogue that I normally don't see from Vainsane, I liked how one of the characters would do the "Good cop, Bad cop" routine on Mota, sometimes faking his sincerity to get the answers from Mota, and then being more direct and forceful. I have speculated that any of the other 2 guys maybe was the killer based on their anger, but honestly it's hard to say, I am not sure there is any evidence for that other than their attitude.
Pros:
(+) I thought the concept was interesting, 2 friends planning to interrogate and kill their friend, but they don't actually know if he did it (+) The first half of the game had some nice background art and movement, not so much the second half (+) Writing was a bit better overall than a few previous games, I like that the game left a bit to speculate
Feedback:
Endings: - 2 of them were too similar, and no ending panels again Lingers too long on the same panel: - even though you kept them in the same place for the narrative (during the confrontation), you still need more art panels for so much text, it's like 10 minutes on same image Overall Thoughts: 6.5/10 The dev now makes these short $2 VN games with strange ideas, so I kinda adjust to the pricing. I liked the game overall, it's better than a few previous games, but as with most of them, the scope is very limited. There was some depth to the characters and them changing their point of view, with some mystery that was not resolved. While I was lately beginning to worry that the quality of this studio's games may be at risk of decline, considering the tight schedule of releases, I'm pleased to say that this VN reached some nice highs, feeling closer to their earlier works! This story is less abstract and more character-oriented, with a vague premise, an intriguing cast and the plot consisting of slowly piecing together the gist of the backstory - all accompanied by the familiar unsettling ambience and surreal immersive visuals and soundtrack. I enjoyed the story; most of the plot takes place in one setting, however is quite well-written and kept me invested to find out all it has to offer. As expected, It's a pretty solid short experience, with the main charm being the atmosphere and overall presentation! I just miss the larger amount of variety in the visuals from the early games now lol (T^T)
MOTA MUST DIE? - Mota Must Die is a very short visual novel where you control the flow of decisions of three characters: Mota, Sei, and Reno, who are accusing Mota (not a spoiler, just look at the name of the game) I hadn’t played any games by VAINSANE before, but I liked the aesthetic, and for such a cheap read I think it’s worth it. The way the “image game” happens and the 3D patterns on the screen are also very fun to follow. Maybe I’ll give some of the publisher’s other games a chance.
A game where you choose and decide the fate of Mota, it had enough weight in the options to genuinely make me stop and consider what to choose. A really solid game with pretty cool visuals that I don't recall seeing in this Studios previous games. The story was very well written with small details being released as you continue to play the game. Characters had really interesting personalities and the contrast between each character made for some interesting dialogue and reveals. Overall I give this game a 8.5/10 because of how good the value is given the affordable price tag.
exactly as it says on the tin/bag. short psychological horror vn. (i personally really liked this story and really enjoyed seeing each ending)
All this developer's game are good. I like Make Moku Proud but I love all of this developer's games. Pros 1. Handsome yandere-type guys, I love their pale faces and red eyes and black hair it's an aesthetic 2. Good art and sounds and animation 3. Interesting Mystery - 2 Endings I got didn't try for the third one 4. Good writing and story Cons 1. Short but not as short as the one about Moku although that was amazing 2. Little scary but not reason to be scared 3. It's realistic in that.....wow...it's just plain sad....in the end
