Review copy provided by developer via Curator Connect I don’t ask a lot of indie games, but the core gameplay has to have something to keep me hooked. Moss Destruction clearly takes inspiration from plenty of roguelike giants like Nuclear Throne for its structure, but there’s none of that frantic shooting or tight control that makes for a memorable experience. Instead, you tromp around featureless halls in a very basic mech, plinking at enemies with a simple laser gun until you find something more interesting. Every level has a weapon crate and a portal to the store where you can buy meta-progression items like a dash or passive bonuses, except you won’t be seeing much of the currency used there. Once you find that weapon crate and decide which extremely familiar weapon you’re taking, there’s not much point in sticking around the level. Especially when enemy spawns go absolutely nuts after like a minute into each level. There might be some kind of loot or XP bonus for sticking around, but the combat isn’t interesting enough to get me to do that. After five very samey desert levels I found a boss spewing shots everywhere and killed it, despite the hit detection on your mech being crap for dodging bullet hell messes like that. The next level was a bit more interesting with open fields and maze-like passages, except the narrow areas were filled with rocket launcher guys that one-shotted me, despite all my health and armor upgrades. That’s not a real good way to keep people invested in your roguelike, but if that was really a consideration then I’d assume the actual shooting would be more fun. Beat the whole game on my first playthrough, quite a lot of fun, but not very long. Lots of achievements and unlocks to be had. The weapon selection is pretty good. I never found the sniper rifle, and the melee really sucks. My favorite was an energy weapon that just shoots out a straight beam of laser. It doesn't pierce enemies so you know if you're actually hitting them or not. The hitboxes seem a bit weird. The "night time" monster spawning is not very balanced, sometimes you'll just get a small trickle of them and it's basically free xp, but sometimes there are a ton all at once and you don't stand much of a chance. Overall, lots of fun. I wouldn't buy it for $12 but in a bundle, sure!
+ Interesting shootouts - Little content - levels, weapons Disgusting second chapter - in everything! Design enemies, levels! - Chapter 2! 5/10 The whole problem of the game begins with the second chapter, if in the first you ran around relatively open areas and freely exchanged fire. Then in the second you will be shoved into rat mazes, where there is zero maneuver, and enemies can kill you with one shot. This design stupidity infuriated me and I decided not to continue playing, and I advise you not to even start! Although I liked the first chapter, it's a pity.
Do you like roguelite twinstick shooters? well... try this ;)
I was very surprised by this game. Maybe it's not very full of contents and variety, but for 1.60€ it gifts the right amount of entertainment. I appreciated it.
Crashes after 5 minutes.
I've put in almost 2 hours into the game, here are my thoughts. It's a pretty cool game. The twin-stick shooting is smooth, the interface isn't too hard to use, and the graphics are easy on the eyes as they are detailed but not too cluttery (although the art style is known to gave some people eyestrain easily). I haven't unlocked much, but I did like some of the things I saw and the in-game weapons provide plenty of variety and opportunities for "moss" damage (sorry had to pun that one). The day/night cycle offers greater rewards at the cost of greater difficulty, which is perfect for people that want to try to hardcore the game and see how far they can go. The steam controller support was wonky, even with using a PS & XBOX controller (despite it being "full controller" support), but the keyboard/mouse was plenty fine to use, and I actually recommend it that way. For the price, I don't have enough playtime to say whether or not it is a good price point but with the replayability potential I think most people would call it fair, especially if you are an action-oriented gamer. And the fact this is an easy game to play in short bursts, I give it a recommend for most audiences. Fun and well developed small game. The gameplay physics are well done and the game runs smooth as butter without any sense of delay and the gameplay control of your character happends in an instant with no lag what-so-ever, at all (highly appreciated in games like these). I got the game for a whooping discount at 2 Euro - that's a catch. Happy with my purchase, indeed!
