A very capable souls-like with meaty combat. Masochists, rejoice!
An amazing sequel, and a great independent representative of the RPG and Soulslike genres!

Loved it.
A NO BS REVIEW FROM AN AVERAGE SOULS AND SOULS-LIKE PLAYER (Finished Game same Day as Big Patch) *On an enjoyment scale of 1-100 this game for ME from beginning to end was a 49 so if there was a Mixed option i would of chose that, but the bad parts slightly overtake the good parts. MY EXPERIENCE IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER! *I PLAY THE DEMO AND FALL IN LOVE WITH THE VISCERAL COMBAT AND THE SIDEARM GAMEPLAY AS IT SCRATCHED THAT ITCH I DIDNT KNOW I HAD. *I PICK UP THE GAME DAY 1 AND THINGS CARRY OVER FROM THE DEMO. *THE FIRST 10 HOURS ARE EPIC AS YOU HAVE GOOD PACING, FAIR ENEMY ENCOUNTERS, AND A DECENT MIX OF EXPLORATION WITHOUT BEING OVERWHELMED WITH ENEMIES AT EVERY TURN. *AFTER 10-15 HOURS I START TO NOTICE THE LEVEL DESIGN BRANCHES OUT ALOT MORE BUT BEACONS BECOME MORE SCARCE, BUT I AM STILL HAVING FUN. *AFTER 20 HOURS THE REFRESHING GAMEPLAY LOOP HITS A BRICK WALL AS LEVELS BECOME SMALLER BUT ARE PACKED WALL TO WALL WITH ENEMIES THAT ARE ALL ESSENTIALLY MINI BOSSES WITH HOW HARD THEY HIT, AND HOW YOU CAN NEVER STUNLOCK THEM BUT THEY CAN INTERRUPT YOUR ATTACKS. I DID NOT HAVE TROUBLE DEFEATING THEM BUT ITS NO FUN WHEN ENEMIES TURN INTO UNSTOPPABLE DAMAGE SPONGES THAT YOU HAVE TO WAIL ON OVER AND OVER, JUST TURNS INTO MINDLESS HACK AND SLASH INSTEAD OF STRATEGY, TIMING, AND POSITIONING BEING USED. * AT HOUR 25 I STARTED TO SEE THE GAME FOR WHAT IT IS. AT THE BEGINNING CLEANSING THE BEACONS WERE FUN, RUNNING INTO DUNGEONS WERE FUN BUT THE REPETITION STARTED TO WEAR ON ME. THE SAME LOOP WORE ME DOWN, FIND BEACON, CLEANSE BEACON, GO DOWN THE SAME MINE SHAFT ELEVATORS OVER AND OVER, STARTED TO FEEL LIKE A CHECKLIST OR CHORE I KNEW I HAD TO COMPLETE NO MATTER WHAT. *BETWEEN HOUR 25-30 I WAS MENTALLY CHECKED OUT AND JUST WANTED TO FINISH THE GAME SO I STOPPED CHECKING TO SEE IF I MISSED A DUNGEON AND ONLY DID THE ONES I CAME ACROSS, IF I COULD RUN PAST ENEMINES DURING BEACON CLEANSING AND GRAB THE OVA AND TELEPORT OUT OF THERE I WOULD. ENEMIES DURING THIS TIME BECAME LASER GUIDED MISSILES WHO TRACKED YOU AS YOU DODGED 3 TIMES IN 3 DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS BEFORE SMACKING YOU FOR 50% OF YOUR HEALTH. *30+ HOURS IN WAS JUST A BOSS RUSH TO FINISH THE LAST 3 CORRUPTED GATES AND GET TO THE FINAL AREAS AND ON TO THE LAST BOSS WHOM I DIED TO MAYBE 20 TIMES, BUT DIED MAX 2 TIMES TO EVERY OTHER BOSS IN THE GAME. CRAZY THING IS BEFORE FINAL BOSS MY MOST DEATHS WERE TO BASIC ENEMIES WHILE ON THE FLIP SIDE I KILLED SOME BOSSES IN 30 SECONDS. *CLOSING* I FEEL LIKE IF ALL THE WEAPONS, TARSTONES, SHELLS, ABILITIES, AND THE LOOK OF THE LEVELS WERE SKINNED OVER INTO A BIGGER WORLD LIKE ELDEN RING, SO THINGS ARE MORE SPREAD OUT, HAVE TRASH MOBS AND BOSSES SWITCH PLACES IN DIFFICULTY. MAYBE DROP THE CLEANSE BEACON GIMMICK AND PUT MORE EFFORT INTO BIGGER AND LONGER MORE HAND CRAFTED DUNGEONS, AND SOME QUALITY OF LIFE IMPROVEMENTS LIKE LONG RUN BACKS AND LACK OF BEACONS THEN THIS THING COULD OF BEEN RUNNER UP TO GAME OF THE YEAR OBVIOUSLY BEHIND GTA 6 LOL. -BEAT GAME AT LVL 50 WITH NO EXPLOITS OR CHEESE #THANKS FOR COMING TO MY TED TALK. TRY THE GAME YOURSELF! IM OFF TO CRIMSON MOON AND ONIMUSHA IN A COUPLE DAYS!
10/10 The End. History: Tried part 1 when it came out for about 1.5 hours. Made a great first impression. The perfect Dark Souls 1/2 Cover song. Then I got tired of the song and just wanted to listen to the original band. Part 2: This game is so damn good, I shall now revisit part 1. I suspect enjoyment now. This game is utterly fantastic. It is oppressive. It is equal parts open and claustrophobic. It has a great progression system. The shells are really cool. Everything feels rewarding. Much of the world is a little plain looking, which makes maps hard to navigate. This somewhat works in the game's favor as very seldom does anything in the environment scream for your attention. There are no Anor Londo's or Raya Lucaria's here. Therefore you tend to kind of wander aimlessly. It's dense and the game rewards careful and thoughtful exploration. The game's way of nudging you around is effective. This is among the greatest open world rpg / soulslikes out there. I dare say, I think this may surpass several From Software games. This one is a gem. 10/10.
