If you appreciate carefully crafted characters with strengths and weaknesses, this game is for you. I you enjoy thoughful conversations with a diverse cast, this game is for you. If you cherish pretty and creative character designs, this game is for you. This is not something to rush through, it’s kind of a critique and analysis of MMO and dating games, and you will think about it for a long time. At the same time, it’s so much fun to explore the different places and monster girls that inhabit the meager rest of the ingame world, the minigames are all classics and break up the somewhat philosophical overall tone of the narrative. It’s a perfectly entertaining mix if you know what to expect: Not a superficial dating game, but a small opportunity to look behind the shallow mechanics of that genre.
the decision to give this game a bad review didn't come easy as some of the characters are nice and some content is not that bad.. but the last game and the last character destroyed the whole game for me... the punishing "end quest" and the punish mechanic is at some point really annoying and then the dialog ... the last character might show how the dev thinks about some people and how they should behave ? i don't know. The nonestop insults and belittleling at the end felt really stupid also some remarks that were made in all the dialogs seamed somewhat off.... as if someone had to insult some kind of people and using this game as excuse for it... Like i said... the game had it's fair share of interesting points... but that was not enough for all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the player has to endure in the dialogs especially at the end.
I was lucky enough to get my hands on a beta key for this. And I can fully recommend it! Monster Girl Therapy features a wonderful cast of charming, well-written and complex monster folks. Despite some serious themes, it is fascinating to me how well the game balances being both lighthearted yet also meaningful. All the “girls” fulfill their own role in the dying world of the abandoned game which they belong to, but at the same time they have deeper identities and desires than merely what the game code instructs. It is a rather rare occurence for me to not be able to decide who my favorite character from a cast is. But I’m really struggling here! This game does not shy away from commenting on players’ experiences and expectations, especially with regards to the genre of dating sim and its many tropes. But it is also conciliatory in quite a compelling way. MGT also serves as a great example of why I prefer shorter games. It should usually take you 3 to 5 hours to complete and uses that time to do everything it sets out to do. NO unnecessary collectibles, meaningless side quests or other alleged “must-haves” of larger, especially mainstream games which pretend to “give you more for your money”, but mainly take away your time while you chase for completion. Monster Girl Therapy knows what it wants and it delivers on its premise masterfully. Go get it and support indie developers! They deserve it. Everyone does!
Well, what can I say? This game certainly has that old school RPG Maker charm. It doesn't show off with fancy graphics or super thrilling mechanics. Instead, the developer relies on his writing skills and delivers gloriously weird characters with unique dialogues. And a fox girl. Don't forget the fox girl!
All hail Shaliva, my shlimy queen! Monster Girl Therapy has an interesting and lovable cast that shines thanks to several strong and distinct personalities (most importantly, it has Shaliva)! Even more so than in many other games in the genre, each character has her own unique voice and way of speaking. It goes well beyond simple quirks - you can practically imagine how a full voice performance would sound. Their reservations and the reasons why they don't immediately go along with things feel believable and emotionally understandable… …we’ll see whether Madame will gain more fans. I’m definitely one of them! There are also minigames, and each waifu gets her own. They range from "pretty cool and they also tell you something about the character" to "feels rather uninspired." Overall I enjoyed them and they help break up the pacing. Some of them aren't total pushovers either, and you actually have to put in a bit of effort to beat them, which I appreciate. The biomes the girls reside in feel rather generic, but fit them thematically well. Some of them are also large enough that you can explore them a bit, whereas others are pretty small and only for flavor. The music is sadly not that great. My biggest criticism is the worldbuilding. At no point did I feel like this was a real MMO. It feels more like a framework for the plot (and a few jokes) than a truly fleshed-out setting. I also couldn’t stop wondering how he even plans to rescue the monster girls from the game in the first place. That’s a shame, because it distracted my attention from the themes that are actually more important. The game isn’t afraid to question the protagonist's escapism. At the same time, it stays open enough to allow for personal interpretations—without making the character feel completely empty. So how much do you read into it, and doesn’t that perhaps reveal something about yourself as well? What else is there to say? Shaliva is best girl! FIGHT ME!
Full disclosure: I received this game as part of the beta testing team. Have you ever wondered what it would be like, if all the weird love interests in your favourite RPGs ore VNs had an actual personality? I mean, aside from making the right dialogue choices and thus filling up some kind of affection bar? This game is kind of that. I would describe it as an anti-dating game. These Monster girls are all kinds of messed up an you're part of the problem! I found the writing to be excellent most of the time, sometimes genuinely exceptionally funny. Most of the characters present are very likeable or at the very least relatable. The visual novel-style dialogues are broken up with a set of diverse minigames. None of those are anything exceptional, but they work fine and are a welcome distraction. (And also help develop the characters of the Monster Girls in question.) If you're looking for a relatively short, endearing story that respects your intelligence, you can't really go wrong with this one, especially for the low pricetag.
Nice little indie game that can get pretty absurd at times. You just have to know what kind of experience you’re getting into. At its core, it’s about a three-hour visual novel where you explore the world a bit while different monsters, some cute and some less so, come to you with their various problems and complaints. To keep things from getting monotonous, there are a few minigames here and there. They range from simple classics to small puzzle sections. None of them are particularly difficult though, as the story is clearly the main focus. Well… except for Simon Says. I curse you, Simon Says. If you enjoy this kind of humor and like games where you spend most of your time reading, this is an easy recommendation. Even though it’s not mentioned in the description, the game also runs perfectly fine on Linux. Tested on Fedora and SteamOS using Proton GE 10.32.
Monster Girl Therapy may look simple at first, but it surprised me in a really nice way. Instead of fighting monsters, you mostly talk to them and try to understand their problems. The conversations are often funny, sometimes thoughtful, or just weird. ^^ And the characters feel more real than I expected first.
Who should play this game: - People who can feel compassion for inanimate objects, - people who have a heart, - people who want to interact with monster girls without it being schmexualized, and or - people who love witty dialogues!
