Dog Duty is a handheld (Nintendo Switch)/console game that's also been put on Steam as a bit of an afterthought, as it's very much designed for the handheld/console gaming audience. It's a tactical RTS, that is to say, an RTS but without any base building or resource stuff. You know the missions in Command & Conquer where you weren't allowed to build a base or build new units, and you had to try scrape through carefully with the tiny handful of soldiers they give you? Yeah, I hated those. This game is basically "Oops, all squad missions". Ugh. I really think before any developer makes an RTS they should first be forced to play RTS games so they can learn what RTS games are all about. One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience. The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets with crap 2D retro pixel "art" textures on them, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the early 1990s. This very poor quality visual style is a method that lazy devs often use to disguise their lack of talent/interest in doing the graphics properly and trying to disguise it under the name of "art", or "We made it look bad on purpose", which really isn't something gamers should have to put up with. It's unclear why the developers weren't willing to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets and high resolution textures for the game. It looks bad as a result of their decisions, worse, it doesn't authentically recreate the 1990's vibe the developer is hoping people will accept instead of doing their job properly, and that's just another reason to avoid it. Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. Dog Duty didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for installing a mounted gun, trivial to get, but less than 16 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the game. Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a modest spike in player counts for the game. But this only happened once, and isn't consistent with the achievement stats, that show less than 16 percent of players bothered playing the game for any reasonable amount of time. How is it possible for this game to have so many concurrent players who didn't bother engaging with this game? Trading cards. People will use card idling software to collect the cards and sell them, but this won't trigger any achievements in-game. That tells us people only really bought this game for trading cards, and that's a damning indictment of the woeful quality. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with little merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Dog Duty has the ridiculous, laughable price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. For comparison, the $5 asking price for this game could get you games like "Torchlight 2", "Portal 2" or "Payday 2". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. Unfortunately Steam reviewers aren't presented with a "Maybe" option... if they did, that's what I'd choose. This isn't a completely bad game, but it's also not one of the best. As always, if you read my review and you can overlook the negatives I've called out, or they just aren't important to you, then by all means go ahead and buy this.
An enjoyable ride which feels geared towards casual fans of the genre, if not absolute newbies.
By no means a long game, and besides the campaign there is a horde mode playable in 3 different settings. Not much in the way of story, but the gameplay loop, while simple, is quite fun. It's mainly outpost liberation across 3 (or 2?) locations with a boss fight in each until the final showdown. > Control a team of 3 characters with additional ones you can find as you progress, each with a special ability > A variety of guns (rifles, a shotgun, among others) and items (molotov, medkit, manual turrets for when you are on a vehicle, other stuff) for the squad to try out on the baddies (there are only a handful of enemy types and while that's fine, a couple more types wouldn't have hurt) > Speaking of, there are 2(?) drivable vehicles (1 land and 1 water; can't recall for certain but I believe there's also a car) > The vehicle handling can feel somewhat frustrating at times, but not really a dealbreaker The game doesn't overstay it's welcome (at least it didn't for me, and I am by no means a fan of the strategy genre) and as such the limited gameplay elements don't feel like some chore you can't wait to be done with. (suggestion: play over the course of three/four days in short bursts, and by short bursts I mean an hour, roughly) As mentioned, the game feels like it's not for hardcore afficionados of the genre because it's relatively easy to beat. On a couple occasions (at the larger outposts) I did get stuck, but it didn't take long to figure out a better approach. As long as you aren't being cocky or hasty, you shouldn't have a hard time. I also found the art style to be very fitting for the tone of the game, and did not encounter any game-breaking bugs during my playthrough. Overall, if the games piques your interest, you might wanna give it a shot, especially if you are a newcomer to the genre. In fact, I'll go far as to say this might even be a decent entry point into the genre.
Tip: Stock up on molotovs for a very particular segment of the endgame
战斗很无聊,车辆船只的操控感觉很奇怪,不好玩。

Only one difficulty Game is very small with only three or four biomes but made artificially longer as success is based on pattern-memorisation or knowing exactly when a soldier is going to come on screen, shoot and where it's going to shoot like Contra or Castlevania. This is only accessible to the most sadomasochistic and not good if you have a large back log of games offering a much much stronger sense of achievement and progress for your limited game time spent. Games are meant to be fun, Dog Duty leaves me feeling sick and anxiety ridden inside without any progressto show for it.
