Mister Versatile: A Gay Superhero Visual Novel

[b]Of Spunk and Soullessness[/b] Mr. Versatile is a humorous and light-hearted pornographic visual novel which bets on taut muscles and latex. Spark and lustre wherever you look. Is it, however, worth your time and money? For staggering $54, one gets a story that can be breezed through within two hours; add to that three DLCs, which, if read conscientiously, last no more than thirty minutes, each. The game is packed with drawings, which makes the price somewhat easier to swallow – art is, after all, the most expensive component of a visual novel. On other hand, Y Press Games is not some small-time publisher in need of money, as Mister Versatile was crowd-funded for $35,500 (another YPG title, Dear Monster, raised hefty $87,000). The studio is also aggressive in advertising plastic [url=https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ypressgames/mister-versatile/posts/2966386]paraphernalia[/url]: pop sockets ($10), pins ($30), or mouse pads ($35). Mind you, YPG is also Patreon-supported. Isn't it then rather pathetic to charge *separately* $9 for art books, soundtrack, *and* the guides? … Which, by the way, are no more than a PDF cheat-sheet with instructions. As to what Mr. Versatile actually offers: uninspired fillers, silly romances, and a bit of porn. Dialogues range from amusing to embarrassingly banal. In every line rings soullessness; and so, the writing fails to sell the fantasy it peddles. This and fundamental misunderstanding of how men tend to interact with each other are the hallmarks of YPG. The men they produce are scarcely human: while muscular, sexual, and strikingly virile, they are but fragile flowers the main character has to daintily nourish with kindness. If a player follows this approach, they open up and embrace the sunlight. Characters of this kind are about as believable as a varsity rugby player keen on knitting tulip patterns and reading Sappho. But alas, in the world of Mr. Versatile, characters live by Excel bullet points. Then there's art, Mr. Versatile's strongest and most appealing aspect. It is manifold and very colourful… yet also samey. There are sex scenes aplenty, but they are absurdly abrupt, without a build-up, and wrapped up with hasty, anticlimactic finishes. It is laughable how everyone always reaches climax at the same time. It is lazy. Lack of sexual variety is also underlined by a lack of kinks. Characters get off on looking at their partner's body alone; they barely interact with it. They do not feel each other nor do they kiss the bodies they are supposedly so in love with. No, the sex is clinical and sterile. There are some other points of concern such as nonsensical choices and voice acting being so sparse that it takes immersion *away* rather than adding to it. So then: who is this game for? Possibly for the sexually-starved who long for hunks in latex and get by with with pedestrian vanilla porn. But even then, you are better off with browsing public screenshots. It'll save you the skipping.

its sad there's a no in the middle option, this game is made for a very specific market of people and honestly i might not even be the target demographic , the game dabbles in the idea of mini games exactly twice,the saves work but its so easy just to rewind your choices and let everything play out. in my case i was missing exactly one art piece and i looked high and low only for the game to want to sell me a guide. That i cannot look past, the fact people have to pay to see some of your confusing dialogue choices simply to experience all of the game is scummy. The art is amazing but the stereotypes feel a little too on the nose. i am cautiously excited for what you guys make next. but this just isn't it chief, there are visual novels on here that do more than this for less.

Some might say, the lack of depth is okay for a pr0n (<3 <3 <3 <3 you, Steam cencorship) game. I, however, beg to differ. Good pr0n, in my humble opinion, [i]must[/i] have good plot. It helps to build the tension, leading to a heart-wrenching (and, well, not only a heart-wrenching) climax, and if there is no tension, such heights simply cannot be achieved. What does Mr Versatile has in terms of heights? One can be said for certain: the art is absolutely gorgeous, and the music is nice. Sex scenes are hot, and that - I acknowledge this much - is already a lot. But, coming back to where I started, good art and good music is not everything, when we are talking about a video game, even if this is a visual novel. Especially if this is a visual novel with little to no gameplay. I do believe there are people who get a hard on (or get wet, but that's harder - pun not intended - to believe) simply by looking at a well-drawn naked body or a well-drawn explicit scene, and the majority of the game fans might just fall into that cathegory. But a lot of people are much more complex than that. They need something more to hook their attention: an intriguing story, a captivating atmosphere, interesting, life-like characters. And it's a shame that Mr Versatile looks promising, but doesn't deliver. A real shame, because I personally find a superhero setting very exciting and kinky, and the game could've been so much more, if only the same amount of effort the developers put into art was put into script. A young superhero fan, a nemesis, a brother in arms, a helpless victim and a supervillain are not new or particularly clever concepts for characters, but in the superhero setting they work well, already building some of the atmosphere. The main hero not being the permanent top or bottom works well for a work of pr0n fiction, really drawing the versatility out. However, the types remain just that: the stereotypes, having little story behind their handsome facades. Mr Versative, its script and its stereotypical one-dimensional characters rely heavily on the cultural ancestry of the genre. The predessors brought the used tropes to life in the first place, so the game tries to use them to do its job for it: to set the atmosphere and tell the tale. Maybe if the game used more of the tropes, it could've still work somehow, but, alas, the game is painfully, unbelievably short. What's more, the large chunk of its length are various gameovers where (spoilers!) someone dies. I personally believe that gameovers other than funny ones were unnesessary in this game. If only it lasted longer Mr. Versatile could've left an impact, if the script were more developed, the game could've been so much more, but, sadly it's not the case. So... it is what it is. Do I recommend it? Only on sale and only if the absence of the plot doesn't bother you. Overall - no, I don't.

While I'm not the biggest fan of superheroes this game is very arousing with likeable characters especially our main hero who is definitely the top pick for me for sure and out of this world fantastic CGs. The base game might be somewhat short but has a lot of very well drawn art. The devs do seasonal outfit changes and constantly updating with new DLCs so the dev support is still there. Would highly recommend for those looking for a gay erotic visual novel with great material!

Hey Guys, Big Mister Versatile Fan here coming with a review on the main game! So when I was younger I sas Mister Versatile on YouTube, which I immediately fell in love with the game. Not because its a YAOI game (I'm not even into Yaoi Games) but it was because the interesting Lore of the Game and the characters. I love making silly and fun Fan art of Captain Crush. But I haven't been keeping up with the game since there hasn't been anything big going on ever since the Driler's Turn DLC came out. But I hope we get more exciting stuff happens in the with the franchise. And tbh. Even if I view Mister Versatile in a positive light, I do have one con to say. The s3x scenes aren't anything to write home about, I think its pretty clear that when there's a Yaoi game, The s3x scenes are not going to be that great and come off as weird. This is just imo thought. But hey! at least this game isn't like Bacchikoi...OMFG I HATE BACCHKIOI SOME MUCH. If you wanna know why Bacchikoi bad...I think you need to play the game or the disgusting extension pack to know why... (Idk if you can still get the game so maybe watch gameplays instead) Anyways back to the Topic. So, Is Mister Versatile a good game for a Yaoi? maybe or maybe not. It depends on how you feel after playing the game. But can Mister Versatile do Better and Improved? Well in my heart yes. Maybe fix the s3x scenes to make them less weird.
