I want so very much to recommend this game, but after many play-throughs, I simply cannot. Some of the scripting/voicing (particularly Merc's) I find highly obnoxious, e.g. "I just spilled my Joe all over the keyboard!" but that's not why... The predominant reason I do not recommend this game is because the mechanics are just AWFUL. As much as I love the parkour aspect, and its originality, every time I play this game again I hate it even more. The game does not obey you. When you're running on a flat surface - any flat surface, anywhere - and you press the space key, you expect it to JUMP, at some point! but oftentimes it does not. If you're trying to climb up, from hanging off the edge of a wall, and there's a tiny obstacle anywhere within 2 feet of you, it will not let you climb up, even though in reality, you would simply climb up and not stand where that tiny obstacle is... If you are running and want to jump onto a railing and spring up off of it to jump higher/farther, just like you can do with e.g. boxes, so you hold the space key, what does it do? It simply jumps over the railing, and then you fall down to your death if you're up high. There's no actual "jumping" taking place except over the railing! It's like the game was designed to try to kill you if you don't press the exact right key combination in the exact right ways at the exact right times... and not in any sensible way. Mirror's Edge 2 (Catalyst) fixed all of these sorts of things. However, I cannot recommend Mirror's Edge 1, especially as a programmer. Did they not test the game any? Did these things not piss all of them off too? And it would be simple to fix... It ruins the gameplay, the vibe, the intensity, the smoothness, etc. So just go play Catalyst instead.
look i WANTED to like this game but i just couldnt going from actualy flaws to personal gripes: -sprinting almost feels slow most of the time AND its hard to get into a flow state for me which is detrimental to a game like this -personally what happend to me was the frames would get choppy 15 minutes in or so give or take -and i feel sometimes its hard to tell where to go and the mechanic to show you where you need to go just makes you face the directon which can screw you over i feel it had a really cool idea but just didnt work for me idk.
Great game for the vibes. Sick art direction. However INCREDIBLY A** CONTROLS and frustrating moments. Recommended essential game for all gamers
Mirror's Edge is an engaging and beautiful game with fluid controls and phenomenal art direction. Even nearly 20 years later, this game is still unmatched when it comes to realistic and mechanical first person parkour platforming. Many parkour games after it either go for a more arcade-y or hard realism approach, but Mirror's Edge is able to perfect a middle ground between both. Quick intro: You play as Faith, a "runner" who transports sensitive data via parkouring on rooftops while avoiding the law. You live in a dystopian city where everything is monitored. Your sister Kate has been framed for the murder of a political candidate, and it's your job to find out who framed her and why. Controls are smooth and responsive, although Faith can sometimes decide not to grab a ledge and kill herself. Movement is momentum-based, rather than your jumps and speed ramping up to 100% as soon as you move. You can't just jump from one building to the next from the ledge, you need to back up first and gain some speed. This makes keeping up a good pace a lot more satisfying as your leaps connect effortlessly. Despite keeping up the pace being the name of the game, there are quite a few unfortunate pace-breakers that usually slow you down to a crawl. Pressing buttons and turning valves force you to stop everything and wait out an animation that has no right to be as long as it is. Even rolling to break your fall sets your speed back to zero, which feels especially bitter after keeping up a decent rush. Picking up weapons have to be the most frustrating though. It prevents you from running for practically no reason, turning the game from a parkour heaven to a mediocre shooting gallery in the blink of an eye. These combat sequences appear far too frequently as well. Speaking of guns, combat in this game is really, really not all that great. Enemies, especially in later levels, can shoot Faith down rather quickly. Faith can fight back both with guns and fists, but it doesn't really add much to the game I feel. It's just another pace-breaker that forces you to beat the guy up before moving on. Seriously, when you get close your camera is locked onto the enemy until you back far enough away or take them down. You can't even use combat to pick up the pace again, it's only purpose is to kill it. Back to positives. The art style of this game is gorgeous, a white and rather boring city highlighted with sparring uses of no more than one or two vibrant colors per area. The use of single colors to brighten up these otherwise monotone environments makes for a striking visual style, reminiscent of 2000's graphic design trends. It's a very intentional use too. Colors are really only seen on the architecture of buildings, like advertisements or interiors. Not even trees get a little green in their leaves, just full white. It reflects the city itself, which seems clean and proper at the surface but is rather constrictive and oppressive in reality. Colors are sparse, and even then it's usually just trying to sell you something or just look presentable. You will find yourself just wanting to take in the simplistic yet beautiful environments from time to time. The story is wholly forgettable. There's not much to even really bring up, or anything significant I can recall. It's nothing more than a backdrop for the fluid gameplay and striking environments. So... don't buy this game expecting anything narratively substantial, is all I can say. All in all, Mirror's Edge is a game I would recommend with only a few caveats. The game really puts you in control of Faith's body, and makes you feel every jump and every step. There's no better high than keeping up a fast pace in this game. Despite this, the game will frequently throw many obstacles designed to break it and set you back to square one. I believe the game is still great in spite of this though. Combined with the pleasing visual, and I almost didn't mention the banging soundtrack that will have you either focused or pumping blood, makes it all the more worthwhile. If you wanted to play the ultimate parkour game, then you're looking for Mirror's Edge.
