Hey, remember when Mirror's Edge was good? This makes me remember! Solid Parkour, if a bit short.
This is one of those where I'd give it a mixed review if it existed. This is a promising tech demo for an indie third-person Mirror's Edge Catalyst. Let's be real, that's what this is. I think for a tech demo this short, it should be free. Just try the free demo version of it. For what it is, it feels pretty decent, has a decent flow, but there's some parts that are jank and slow as others have stated. Namely, if you're not running (sprinting, can we please get a toggle for that?) and you hit a vaultable object, you'll just come to a complete standstill. You need to go backwards a bit and sprint into it. Another thing it needs is a first-person mode toggle and the ability to wallrun on all walls. Otherwise once you learn its quirks, it feels pretty Medgy. An area in couple of the levels (out of 5 including the tutorial and a dev room!) are very difficult/inconsistent to complete. Namely a zipline after a wallrun in Construction and the final wallrunning sections in Action Blocks. It's doable, but very awkward. Hopefully Glass Wings 2.0 becomes a thing, but I don't have much Faith at this point.
Not worth the $0.89 I paid for it. I gave up on playing this within minutes because it feels like it'll just bring more frustration than fun. Movement is not reliably fluid regardless what device you play it on. It has this awkward effect of alternating between faster and slower movements making it feel very jumpy and hard to keep timing between the control inputs and displayed actions. I expected something relaxing to play, but got something that just feels inherently defective. Steam Deck: The experience with a controller is just horrible, making this the only parkour platformer I've tried that is just too frustrating to play on my Steam Deck. A real shame, because this is the exact type of game I'd prefer to play with a controller. Defaults to lower graphics settings than the Steam Deck is capable of - so it looks garbage until you go in and change it. Occasional stuttering, freezing, crashes regardless of the settings. Top-of-the-line gaming PC: Long load times even when installed on an NVME RAID Array. Takes a while to open the game too - with no launch feedback / splash screen to let you know it's doing something while you wait after clicking the play button. Defaults to Medium graphics settings on a system capable of handling Ultra - so it looks garbage until you go in and change it. Occasional stuttering, regardless of the settings.
This game was a solo project, so I wanna give some honest criticism from someone who loves games like Mirror's Edge and Ghostrunner. (Note: I am not a game dev myself.) The Good First and foremost, the rolling and falling are perfect. The punishment of speed instead of health, and the visual indicator that you should've rolled from that height, awesome. The general act of running and moving feel pretty good too, if a little stiff. Much of the game's movement is restricted by every action being tied to their animations, rather than the other way around. This is where games like Mirror's Edge and Ghostrunner benefit from being in first person - there are much fewer player animations to worry about. Despite the limitations, running, wallrunning, sliding, and rolling all feel pretty good. I do still have some gripes with the movement but I'll get to those later. Honorable mention here to the pricetag, only $1 USD. Granted, it's less than an hour of gameplay. But you're supporting a solo dev :) I also like that enemies are there to punish you for being slow, rather than having combat. Though I do like combat mixed in, that's clearly not the goal with Glass Wings. The Criticisms I didn't wanna call this "The Bad" because I really don't think these are that bad. The dev is clearly learning but it's still good stuff here. My biggest gripe: vaulting. Because of the actions being tied to animations, vaulting was easily my least favorite part of Glass Wings. You may often find yourself slightly to the side or at a corner of a box you want to vault over, and suddenly get launched off to the side, or even behind you (or your camera). If you can loosen this up a bit, the game would be so much better. Continuing to talk about movement, I also found that jumping didn't feel too great either, especially when exiting a slide. Maybe it's a skill issue, maybe it's just inconsistent, or maybe it would've been easier if I could rebind my keys. More options are usually good! I mentioned the third person camera being a negative earlier, and I'll add to that here. In a game like this, I get that being in third person helps some people with motion sickness, or taking in their surroundings, but I often find that it just gets in the way. This becomes most obvious on the pure wall-running part at the end of the game. The camera usually ends up getting caught on the wall you're running on when you try to look ahead at the next one. "Why are you turning your camera to the side for a wall transfer?" You may be asking. That brings me to my next gripe, the level design. I will keep in mind that this is a solo dev for this, and I get that it's easy for me to sit here and criticize instead of designing the levels myself. That being said, the related gripe is with the flat textures. I can tell the dev was definitely inspired by Mirror's Edge with the aesthetic they've gone with, but the flat colors and lack of depth really hurt it in some parts. It's hard to tell how far away, or even how long, the walls are when doing wall transfers like that when the textures are a solid color. And continuing on about the level design: some more variety. You gotta give us a reason to traverse an obstacle. Putting a line of boxes leading to a jump doesn't make me want to vault 5 times in a row, it makes me want to go around. Especially when the vaulting slows you down the way it does. I did notice that they put some shortcuts in one level where you're climbing a spiral, but that doesn't change that it's still a spiral full of upwards of 25 boxes to vault over. All in all? Still a good concept here, I like what you've got going, but there's still some improvement to be had. I look forward to seeing Glass Wings 2, honestly :) And again, for $1? It's worth a try.
Good game, would love to see some sort of level editor in it.
pretty good start up idea. i have been looking for something to scratch that itch of mirrors edge and this is hitting that spot.
Purchased to support the developer on the 2.0 version. I really love Mirror's Edge style games and this could potentially be something that can revitalize the parkour genre.
