A decent HOG in my opinion.
I wouldn’t say that this is the most popular of genres when it comes to games and I would say they are usually rated pretty low because of that fact.
The genre within itself is pretty cheesy. The stories are usually quite silly, making excuses as to why you have to find a load of junk amongst more junk and generally being pretty lame. But I amongst a lot of other people actually enjoy these games. They are a guilty pleasure for me I must admit. I used to sit and play them with my mum, seeing as they really are the middle aged woman’s kind of game.
With all that said when it comes to playing and rating hidden object games, I usually tend to just rate them by how bearably cheesy they are. This one being pretty bearable.
The story is interesting and compared to what I have seen of other HOGs, is a bit more logical.

Most HOGs, you’re a detective or investigator of some sort looking for clues to solve a case, at least that’s a popular one, but even then in those cases you are just collecting random bits of crap. You know, a tooth brush, some hamster hair, a spade and a packet of hobnobs, calling them “clues” and wah-la! We’ve found the killer!
No, no. In Mirror Mysteries you’re searching for pieces of a mirror, scattered through different worlds and realms. There is of course the obligatory point and click “I’m not going to just straight up give you what you are looking for, first YOU need to do something for ME” so you end up solving a lot of other people’s problems to. But still, as far as HOGs go… at least it makes more sense. Which was nice!
The whole find/place mechanic in this game is something I liked also. You can jump in and out of scenes easily and in some cases need to jump back and forth to proceed. It’s not at all tedious, it’s actually a bit of fresh air. HOGs usually have a set screen, you solve that screen entirely before moving on. This at least gives you a bit of freedom to do more than one thing at once. Or at least, it feels that way. It’s nice this genre of game not being so linear for once! I like it!
Like many HOGs the resolution for this game is a bit low. It’s never been an issue for me, the genre itself just looks old and dated so low res has never bothered me. But I have noticed in reviews that a lot of other people take this very seriously! So just to warn ya!
Apart from that and the game being fairly short (which I sometimes, especially with HOGs, I actually like) all in all I would say this is a decent game. If you are a fan of the genre I would say definitely give this a try. Although I haven’t played the second one yet. Should be interesting!
TL;DR: As far as HOGs go, decent story, nice mechanics, bit short (I completed it in an hour), low res but generally a good game. Go for it.
