This is a game I really, REALLY want to give a positive review for. If there was a neutral button I would have gladly picked that over a negative review on this game in particular. The developer though small time is still trying to finish this game the problem is that there are some things that just are NOT well balanced in this game. At the beginning of this game everything is a slow and painful clog to get any material back to the surface, if you started this game with say the lv 2 visor and boots, the early game would progress at a FAR smoother rate. But by the time you craft the tier2 gear and are beginning the hunt for the t3 materials due to the fact that the t3 teleporter is not much further down than the t2 one and the materials needed for the t3 boots and teleporter are both relatively far from your prior location this can mean HOURS of digging without finding what you need. Since you cannot build a hole straight down or you will not have the fuel in order to get back. So you have to make a winding snake like path downward in order to get back out. This becomes worse when dealing with the games biggest fatal flaw in my opinion, the limited inventory system. Since you will dig down so far when trying to get the rubies, sapphires, topaz, and other rarer materials that you will inevatably will fill your bin and have to return to the surface to make more ingots/gemstones. And then traverse the winding snake path you've made down again so you can find more stuff you don't need anymore before climbing back out and making another 50-150 feet of progress before doing it all over again. And to put this in perspective the t2 teleporter is at depth 530, the materials for the t3 boots and teleporter do not appear UNTIL 2500-3000 depth! This would have been far easier if each bin doubled in size, or the increments were 30 or 40 units instead of 20. And considering the further you go down the more materials you obtain per block, if you've got that t4 bin that can hold 80 materials and you just found a strand of 20 diamond blocks, well you'll have to dig up 12-14 of them and come back to dig the rest of them out sucks to be you! If it weren't for the troubles it has above I'd easily recommend it, the voice acting gives you this eerie feeling, and the entire landscape and game gives you chills that a non-horror game hasn't given me in a pretty long time.
i am incredibly frustrated with this game tbh like not to be a jerk but first off, controls are wonky. but like, that's whatever. that happens a lot, i get it, i can deal with that to an extent. the combat is just terrible. it's like... fidgety. it's all over the place and very rarely is it satisfying. your character is slow, it's purposely terribly lit for upgrades(so, y'know. if you have even the slightest bit of vision issues this is not for you, because why on EARTH would a game make itself accessible. gosh. what a concept. too crazy 4 me!) half the time if you save, it doesn't save. it freezes in the way you can't move, or exit, or save, or open any kind of menu very often, and you just have to close the game and hope the last time you saved registered because there's no autosave at all so you lose tons of progress real easily. manually saving takes a couple seconds and you need to do it constantly if you don't wanna constantly be set back. i tried real hard to give this thing a chance but, i don't know. maybe you'll have better luck. but that's been my experience.
Usually I write quite in-depth reviews but I haven't played this game enough to go in-depth. I quit after 20 minutes. The controls are awful, the game fails at the start to give you a proper objective or reason behind doing anything, the different shops have terrible systems and you cannot even view the keybinds, let alone change them. It feels unfinished, as if the developer just had enough with the game or lost interest in it when it was in Early Access and just decided to release it and be done with it. If you haven't already played it I recommend Motherload a thousand times stronger than this.
I played the game at least 2-3 years before this review, back when it was on Humble Bundles Mobile game bundle. I played through and finished the game on my phones tiny screen, and this is an obvious port to PC, things like the improved vision from the helmet upgrade are useless and do literally nothing as your screen is already big/bright enough on PC, level 3 helmet and it still looks the exact same as the level 1. Controls stick sometimes, other times they wont register for a second or two. The game is really slow and its kind of a pain to walk all over the surface after each mining trip and 1/2 or more of your gameplay is going to/from places, walk 2 buildings from the teleport to unload your Gems from cargo, walk a building over, unload your metals from cargo, walk another 2 buildings over to craft if you need to, walk another 2 buildings over to heal and refuel (Which also takes forever while you sit there idle watching your health slowly fill back up) and then walk ANOTHER building over just to reload your ammo. That's a visit to 5 fairly spread out buildings after every trip you make. The story is... There, not good, but there, Motherload had better story to it... Overall it is a fun game. I had fun, but as I said, its really slow and tedious, I found myself pulling out my phone to play games on that while I held down to finally find the ores I needed. Dont be fooled by my 13 hours of playtime, I spent a total of 3-4 hours actually playing the game to finish 100%, I just have a habit of leaving a game open if Company comes over or I unexpectedly leave my PC.
Mines of Mars is a 2D "mining" platformer game like Spelunky. The game appears to be well polished, but the developer assumed my HOTAS is a gamepad and tried to force me to map buttons with it instead of just allowing normal control customisation. Unfortunately, cancelling the controller customisation was impossible because every time it took input from a HOTAS axis, it would bring up the key binding again. The 2D retro pixel "art" isn't the worst I've seen, but that's a bit like being the tallest midget. It's still lazy and it's the same old copout developers use when they lack the budget/talent to arrange proper graphics. Developers that make games for PC but assume every peripheral is a console peasant gamepad are the worst. Anyway, because the game cannot be played by people who own a HOTAS, pedals or racing wheels or any other of a number of PC gaming peripherals, meaning that no testing was done before they dumped this out of Early Access, I can't recommend this.
doesnt auto-save....in 2020....
