Review is based on Version 1.03 It is a fun little game. Controls are solid and upgrades are useful. Achievements work and are simple enough to get. You could probably finish the game in a few hours, definitely within a day if you're trying for that. This is a GREAT game if you’re busy and would like to play a game for 20 minutes before work and feel like you accomplished something. Game play is a simple loop. You dig down collecting upgrade orbs and treasures. Sell treasure. Pay for upgrades and resources to get down farther where higher priced treasure is. This can be a bit ‘grindy’ but that is what this style of game is meant to be. If you are not into that style of game this might not be for you. The combat is a bit easy. Would have been cool to see other colors of snails / other enemy types with AI that are not so cheeseable as you go deeper. Currently the combat is fun and a perfect fit for a casual gaming session so I can see why they left it like it is. Music is decent. It is a bit repetitive but not to the point it drove me crazy while playing. Again I mostly played this in 20-30 minute bursts with a few longer play sessions. There is not a ton of replayability unless you want to do challenge / speed runs i guess. Would be nice for the game to have other asteroids that you unlock as you play with other challenges to overcome (enemies, lava, high/low temps, toxic air, ect. ) I understand that is a lot of work so maybe even a DLC. I got this game for free but feel like the price is about right at $7.99 USD. On sale it would be a bargain.
Canary in a Crater is a clone of Miner Dig Deep, but it's graphics are far better and in my view super cute! ^_^ Movement is smooth, but seems slower than Miner Dig Deep. There are upgrades and things in this game that Miner Dig Deep does not have, but I did not play enough to see them myself so I can not comment upon if those aspects make the game overall stronger then Miner Dig Deep. The developer seems genuinely into improving the game and making it better then it is and is open to critical feedback.
I really like this game! The art and dialogue are charming, the game looks great, and the gameplay is fun and interesting! I kept playing the game because I wanted to discover all of the upgrades and new ores and stuff, and was pretty satisfied with the ending! The only time I was ever unhappy with the game is when I got eaten by a snail and lost my stuff, haha. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone with some money to spend and some time to kill!
Only 5 Steam reviews? This game is awesome and it really deserves more recognition. Canary In A Crater is a 2D mining game, similar to Miner Dig Deep, Motherload, Steamworld Dig etc. Mechanically, the game functions very well - I never encountered any bugs during my play-through and the controls remained solid throughout. The sound design is acceptable and the graphics and art design are very nice, in my opinion. The default controls are good, although you have the option to rebind them, if necessary. Overall, I really enjoyed this game, and for £2.09 at full price, it's a bargain! The replay value is high and the game is engaging throughout. Having enemies in the game really adds another layer to the gameplay. You really feel the progression in this game and it doesn't just feel like a race to the maximum depth. Anyone who enjoys the aforementioned games must play this!
Not very good sadly. It's a poor man's Steamworld Dig basically. Everything is inferior in some way and also it has these annoying punishing mechanics where you just have to keep returning to your base because you run out of your battery, or you run out of ladders, or whatever. Dying not only deletes all your mined materials, but also your equipment that allows you to move underground - which might technically mean it's possible to lock yourself out of progression completely.
i love 2d mining games., played em all. I have taken shi*s with more depth than this game. Try it if you find it on sale for....free.
