I'd like to recommend this game. A good hit of nostalgia for about an hour and a half. It reminded me of playing motherlode as a kid and just having a good time of it. But, unfortunately, I just can't recommend it at the price it is. I have 78 minutes on record. I've beaten all there is to offer beyond grinding mindlessly for more upgrades or getting the achievement to beat the game 5 times. It's a good game, but I sincerely don't think it's a good $10 game.
Beat the game in less than 2 hours. Not enough content for the list price. I'm not demanding a refund, just thought there'd be more to it. It was fun but would fit better on a site like Kongregate (RIP) or similar. The remaining achievements aren't discovery or content-based, just grinding the same content I've already done. Maybe the dev is planning more content, but if it's paid DLC I'd have to pass.

Fun game, like a new Motherload. Could use video options so you can play windowed, not even steam launch controls will let you do it.
When I start the game I'm filled with nostalgia for the old flash game Motherlode and I would like to experience something similar and expanded upon. I wasn't expecting to also have a similar user experience in terms of game options. Missing even a basic option menu for resolution and windowed mode control. The ability to rebind keys, and just a quick screen of "how to play" to show what buttons to press to have things move is something I would consider the bare minimum, yet it's missing on day 1 of this title's launch. The game doesn't have any mouse support to navigate the menus. The gameplay and mechanics seem similar to Motherlode and I'm still going to continue playing despite these faults. For now I would hesitantly recommend, just know that you might have to wrangle the game itself in order to play. Hopefully these things can be quickly resolved with a patch.
I have mixed feelings about this game, but it's similar to a game that I absolutely love: Motherload. I personally view it as a homage to that game, and I'm absolutely fine with this game not being as excellent or better than what Motherload was. It's a simpler and shorter version, I 100% understood that going into it, and I honestly think most people should realize that. The mixed feelings is about the price of the game. For the short experience you get I just can't fully justify paying 10$ for such a simple, ~2 hour long game with no re-play ability.
Gameplay
The game is 99% keyboard based, the only times where you can use the mouse is in the buy menus, upgrade menus, etc, but these menus can also be controlled with the keyboard. The actual gameplay is pretty straight-forward: You mine for minerals, sell them to upgrade your vessel, re-fuel, buy upgrades like Teleport to surface, explode, mine through solid rock, etc. The goal is to build a beacon so you can get rescued from Volantis. The is no real story. Just a short blurb at the beginning explaining why you ended up there and what your goal is. That's about it. My play-through was 100% bug free, so no issues there, and thank you for no fall damage!
Options menu
It has a pretty decent options menu. The audio options has 3 separate sliders: Master volume, Music volume and Effects volume. The video options lets you pick between a ton of different resolutions and refresh rates, and it lets you change between Fullscreen, Windowed Fullscreen, Maximized Windowed and Windowed. Huge thumbs up for these options! The only thing it seems to be missing is being able to change keybindings, which when considering it is a keyboard-driven game it really should have that. There aren't a lot of keybindings, but as long as the keyboard is used it should have a hot-key options menu. Every game should.
Sound and music
Music-wise it's pretty weak, a bit too repetitive, but it is the kind of music you'd expect a game like this to have. I turned it off after a short while and played videos to listen to in the background instead. The sound effects are satisfying, some-what similar to the sound effects in Motherload.
Ending words
Looking at some of the existing reviews it looks like the developer has taken a lot of the criticisms and feedback to heart and implemented a lot of the suggestions, so kudos to you Spacefish Games! It also looks like they are working on making a free update that brings 'artifacts' to the game, so I might have to check that out once it's released. It all comes down to the asking price. I personally think it's too expensive. Unless you're really itching for a different type of Motherload experience I'd put it on your wishlist and hope for a good sale price one day. I have to admit that I am a bit biased though. I loved playing Motherload on Miniclip when I was kid, I beat it several times once the new Motherload version was released on Steam and I've always longed for a similar game and I think Mines of Volantis is a pretty good homage to the genre-defining masterpiece that is Motherload
Curator page
If you liked this review or otherwise found it helpful in deciding whether or not to buy this game, feel free to follow my Curator page.
Thumbs up, but barely. It's not that the game is bad, but I paid almost $9.00 for a game that I'd expect to see on newgrounds or armorgames. I don't mind supporting indie devs, but I expect a bit more from them if they're going to put this kind of price point.
Ohhh this games takes me back to the time of Motherload. (the flash version, not the steam version) I just love the ambiance and the music is very good! Every time you go down it is the question of will I be back before my fuel runs out? Every dive is a hunt for riches that you don't want to interrupt to get fuel, but you have to. And in time as well because else your haul will be lost forever! Upgrading this makes it easier to get huge hauls. Content wise I think the price is a bit steep but the game is very fun to play nontheless.
Oh man, i was waiting for this game for a while. What a let down. Game is clunky, weird mechanics (never need to refuel, because you die and start with a full tank) and most of all: lack of content. Game is barely worth 1 euro, get it when it has a 90% sale to have a few hours of grind.
3 hours disappeared; I'm not sure how. But now I need to sleep before work. If you liked 'Motherload' for the zen mining; you'll probably like this.
A shameful try at remaking Motherlode. It all just feels off, and with no settings nor any reason to "progress" to what comes to an hour of play (unless you want to grind) it is just a waste of time. I truly liked the bug that removed 1/4 of the features gg
