My human Form is proud. A proud Child of the 80´s. Beeing in School from 1979 to 1990 i lived the 80´s in its total pure form. We have had no Handys, no You Tube, no Steam. We have had our TV, our Home Computers and ... our dreams. After watching Series like MIAMI VICE, Movies like TRON, Games like OUTRUN we closed our Eyes and drifted away. Somewhere... Somewhere on the Horizon, where our Music and our Dreams carried us. Feeling absolutly free, breathing the spirit of a Time so unique. And i welcome EVERY Music, EVERY Movie, EVERY Series and EVERY Game that carries me back there. Like this Game. So dear Readers, feel welcomed to MIDNIGHT THUNDER RIDE! Starting the Game casts a big Smile on my Face. The Starting Screen is giving big MIAMI VICE Vibes. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3031443872 The Car, the Background and the great Retrowave Music. Looove it. Clicking brings you to a Menu where you can choose between different options. You can visit your Garage to Tune Up your new Car or visit the Cartrader for a new Car. No, you don´t get that for nothing. Of course you have to earn it. And not every Car can be bought, even if you earned the Money. You have also earn career Points to set new Maps and Cars free. How? Win! Win races and challenges and make your way to the top! While most Retrowave Racer has "just" different Tracks to drive and to enjoy MIDNIGHT THUNDER RIDE puts it on a new Level. There are 5 Mapes with 3 different Challenges waiting for you. TIME TRIAL: Beat the Time in Time. :-) DRIFT: Reach the specified drift value before the Finish Line. BOSS BATTLE: Beat the Boss to get his Car. Yes, like in RIDGE RACER 1. With each Race you get Credits and Career Points, so be good to get the Maximum you can get. All Maps need Career Points and will unlock automatically when you reach the Value. For the Cars you need Money and there are many Cars. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3031444332 The Gameplay. Fluid, easy to learn, but also hard to master when it comes to the Drift. You have to find a balance between drifting and turbo. It felt a little like RIDGE RACER 1 for me. After i learned the drifting there i won every Car in that Game. Here it is the same. In the Beginning i was really bad, but then i found out how it works and got a feeling for it. Now it is pure Fun to make races and earn Credits and Career Points to reach more an more. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3031444671 You have 5 Maps, each with 5 Time Trials, 5 Drifts and 1 Boss Battle, that makes 55 Race Tracks. You can replay each again and again and the more you unlock, the better the Rewards. Will you have a favourit Car and tune it to the Top or will you just wait for a better Car and tune it then. Your choice. You can not only tune up your Car. Customization of your Car is also avalaible. Want a new Colour? Want your Name on the Car Plate? No Problem! Change it. And that all, no matter where you in the Game are, guided by a fantastic and wonderfull Retrowave Soundtrack that fits absoooooolutly perfect in. That all for a really good price and also with Achievements. A very, very big thanks to the Developer. Thank you so, so much for this Journey to the Past. And if you, dear Reader, want also a wonderfull Trip to the 80´s with an addicting and well done Game you should not wait and enter the Journey like me. Thank you very, very much for reading. I've checked out many synthwave racers, and this is the greatest one. The visuals are beautiful and dreamy, the driving is easy and relaxing (once you get the hang of it, and once you upgrade your car), and the music is top notch. If you want that exquisite retro-futuristic experience with neon lights, palm trees, night cityscapes, beach sunsets, space highways, 80s sportscars, then look no further.
Generic racing game with amazing 80s’ soundtrack and aesthetics that will be quickly forgotten. You begin by choosing your preferred car from three different options. Despite different stats, such as acceleration or speed, everything car may be improved with upgrades that you can buy with your hard-earned money. Each piece of equipment comes in several stages, but the best need to be unlocked first by progressing through the game. There are many more cars than the first three. The collection is quite big and the cars are designed to look like well-known brands. The rest of the garage options are primarily cosmetic, such as paint and parts. Although various body components provide an attractive personal touch to your car, it’s better to spend your money on real upgrades that made a difference. After you've finished personalizing, you can start racing. The game is divided into five volumes. You can only play the first one because the rest require reputation that you gain by winning. Each volume contains two events: drift and time trial. Drifting is relatively simple once you understand how to manipulate the physics. The goal is to get the desired score by using the handbreak to engage the drift, however this requires very little effort because points start coming in as soon as the car travels a little sideways. It’s possible to get best score in the first half of the track. The multiplier makes this even simpler. As long as you keep driving, it will continue to rise. Of course, if you crash, you lose your existing score. When you're satisfied with your score, all you have to do is drive straight. After a few seconds, the score will register. Of course, you still need to reach the finish line. Time trials require a little more effort because you must drive fast and clean. There should be no problems because time is quite generous. Turbo comes into play here. It's generated by drift, and you get a lot of it real fast. But it's a much better idea to just drive without drifting and turbo. When you hit the volume’s requirement, you can challenge the boss. This is the only time where upgrades and even a new car are necessary because you will be left in the dust without them. There’s no room for a single error because the boss drives like it’s on rails. And I mean this literally, because if you find yourself in the front and on its set path, you will be thrown into the air like you’re nothing. If you manage to beat a boss, you get their car. Driving is fine but not great. Roads are wide and open, so it works best when you drive at top speed. It also can’t escape the common problem of many indie racing games. Sometimes, when you drive near the side of the road, you hit a piece of texture sticking out that stops you right away. Soundtrack is awesome, but one track is apparently missing because there's only annoying static coming out of the speakers. Tracks are different within a volume, but they all have the same look. There are palm trees and signs by the road in the first volume, driving through the city in the second volume, etc. The color hue changes a bit, but it’s more or less the same. Sadly, some weird stuttering issue happens after a few tracks. It’s very annoying and can easily happen at the worst moment that sends you into the side of the road. This can be solved by closing and restarting the game. Another thing that I found quite painful is the bright turbo effect. Almost all tracks take place at night, so it can get very painful for your eyes. One single camera view doesn't help either and settings don't save your preferences.
probably the worst out of all the retro racer games out there. not even worth the 1 euro ive paid for - refunded :D
Garbage controls. Garbage camera angles. No reverse. What car doesn't have reverse? What a stupid game.

Midnight Thunder Drive by Runebox Studios is a neon-drenched arcade racer that builds its identity around speed, atmosphere, and a clear devotion to retro-futuristic style. Rather than chasing realism or deep simulation mechanics, it embraces a more immediate, almost hypnotic approach to racing—one where glowing highways stretch endlessly into the night and the hum of synthwave music becomes just as important as the feel of the car beneath your control. The result is a game that feels intentionally narrow in scope, but also confident in the experience it wants to deliver. At the center of the gameplay is a simple but effective driving loop built on drifting and boost management. Players are encouraged to slide through corners with precision, building up energy that can then be unleashed in bursts of speed that propel them forward with exhilarating force. This creates a satisfying rhythm: corner, drift, charge, release. It’s easy to grasp within minutes, yet there’s enough nuance in timing and control to reward players who invest time into mastering each track. The handling leans heavily toward arcade responsiveness, prioritizing fluidity and momentum over realism, which makes it accessible but still capable of offering a challenge when pushing for optimal runs. The game’s visual direction is easily its most striking element. Every track is bathed in neon light, with glowing roadways, silhouetted landscapes, and surreal environmental details that evoke a stylized version of the 1980s as imagined through modern indie sensibilities. There’s a deliberate sense of abstraction in some of the track designs, with gravity-defying stretches and exaggerated curves that reinforce the idea that this is less about real-world racing and more about an audiovisual experience. Complementing this is a pulsing synth-driven soundtrack that syncs naturally with the pacing of the gameplay, elevating even simple races into something that feels energetic and immersive. Content-wise, the game offers a decent selection of tracks and a light progression system tied to performance and currency. Players can unlock upgrades and cosmetic elements, giving a modest sense of advancement without drastically altering the core gameplay. While this structure provides some incentive to keep playing, it doesn’t fundamentally evolve the experience. The primary motivation remains improving skill, shaving seconds off lap times, and learning the nuances of each course rather than discovering new mechanics or modes. For players who enjoy repetition in pursuit of mastery, this works well; for others, it may feel somewhat limited. Where Midnight Thunder Drive shows its constraints is in long-term variety and polish. The core mechanics, while enjoyable, don’t expand much beyond their initial introduction, and the differences between tracks tend to be more aesthetic than mechanical. Over extended sessions, this can lead to a sense of sameness, as the gameplay loop remains largely unchanged. Additionally, there are minor rough edges typical of smaller indie productions—occasional technical hiccups, limited customization depth, and a lack of more robust competitive or social features. None of these issues are severe, but they do prevent the game from reaching a higher tier within the genre. Even with these limitations, the game succeeds in delivering a cohesive and engaging experience within its chosen niche. It feels like a project driven by a clear artistic vision rather than an attempt to compete broadly with larger racing titles. Its strengths lie in its immediacy—the ability to jump in, race for a few minutes, and feel a sense of flow and satisfaction without needing to commit to long sessions or complex systems. That makes it particularly well-suited for players looking for a quick, stylish escape rather than a deep, evolving racing platform. In the end, Midnight Thunder Drive is best understood as a mood-driven racer: a game where atmosphere and rhythm take center stage over depth and variety. It doesn’t reinvent the genre, but it doesn’t need to. By focusing on clean mechanics, striking visuals, and a strong sense of style, it delivers a consistently enjoyable experience that’s easy to appreciate in short bursts. For fans of arcade racing and synthwave aesthetics, it offers a ride that’s both smooth and memorable, even if it doesn’t sustain its momentum indefinitely. Rating: 6/10
