It's not often you see a new indie horror game that comes out and is unique these days! I loved the interactive component, the story-line was great, and the gameplay was terrifying and lots of fun! Great work on the game! Here's my gameplay footage! https://youtu.be/kzIqmm7RcPs
Midnight Evil is a very fun and unique indie horror game, no doubt about it. It's quite the contrast and growth development-wise compared to the studio's prior series with 123 Slaughter Me Street. The game has lots of pluses to it, the biggest factor being the game play. While very simple, you read a book and look at the creatures before they attack. Yes, you must read the story into your microphone to progress in the game. There is an option to have it auto-read, however for a full experience, read it on your own. Without the feature of reading the story on your own and bringing you into the story, it'd lose its value. As I said prior, the rest of the gameplay is simple: look at three different creatures as they appear in your room and try not to die. Each "level" is completed when the end of a chapter is reached; 7 chapters total. There is also a side feature of "Otori" (parody Atari)-esque games which you can unlock more awards and info from. The graphics are pretty solid, though don't feel much different from 123 Slaughter Me Street 2 (the studio's last horror game). There are creepy sounds and the room does resemble a late 70s/early 80s child's bedroom, sort of feeding into the horror aesthetic, I feel that it wasn't all that good at adding ambiance. Games like Boogeyman had you always on your toes with creatures appearing from everywhere and you never know where it'll come next, with quite a lot of places to check; the Urklings will only appear in a few select places and it's easy to get rid of them. Without the Urklings adding that fear factor, it doesn't quite do the room atmosphere itself justice. The story has many twists to it that I was quite surprised by. I won't spoil it, but it's definitely the second biggest reason to play besides the reading part. It has a very well integrated way of telling you what will happen in the next "level" as well using a radio show. The story wraps up nicely as well, however it's still left open for any possible sequels, which I would be very happy to see. I'd have to give the game an 8/10. There are of course ways the game can improve, mainly in the atmosphere and scare-factor. However for what it is and at the given price, it's very fun and an enjoyable horror game to play through. With how unique it is, using the reading function especially, I'd say it's worth the $10 price tag.
Oustanding. Very unique game. Plays & runs great. Gripping story. Exciting lore & monsters. Play the Otori ;)
This game is not worth $9.99. Maybe $4.99 tops. It is incredibly short but very fun. A little on the glitchy side because your microphone randomly stops working and you have to restart the game. It has two mini games for more achievements but they get old pretty quickly. That's it. My review is about as short as the game. If you pay full price you will feel ripped off. I expect a LOT more from a game with a $10 price tag. I look forward to more games from these Devs, hopefully with more content or a lower price point so that the cost makes sense. Thanks for reading! :)
I would recommend this game, but it's pretty repetitive. the story was meh, but my main problem was sentences not being registered and the fact some sentences went on for way too long. plus, the little jibber-jabbers you have to keep away aren't even scary. first" the green one. pretty good starter enemy and pretty balanced. then, the blue/ white one. it's basically a more difficult version of the green one. but the red/yellow ones? SCREW.THOSE. I hate the fact that four or five of them appear, and I often got screwed over by them when ALL THREE OF THE ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ THINGS were there at once. getting killed is practically unavoidable with those things if you're not the usain bolt of moving your cursor. and, the game's pretty repetitive and can get monotonous. good game if you're a wimp, but not if you've seen everything the "you sit stationary and you try to not get jumpscared" genre has to offer. if you want something good, i'd recommend taking a look around at some fnaf fangames. a lot of them have pretty unique mechanics and can offer a pretty good amount of satisfaction
Midnight Evil is basically a gimmick game that revolves entirely around a simple mechanic... you're a kid stuck in bed reading a book, which has caused various gremlin things to enter your room and try to jumpscare you. The only way to hold them at bay is to plug in a mic to your PC and read the book aloud. One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience. Thankfully the developer added a no-mic option to the game so you don't actually have to play the game as it was intended... this is both a good thing and a problem. It's great the developer made the game accessible to anyone and gives gamers the agency to experience the game they want to (that's a minimum requirement, really). The problem is that, well, it highlights how so much of the game revolves around a novel, but shallow premise of limited lasting value to gamers. My grandmother would have called this a "one minute wonder". The game is very simplistic, small and limited in scope and ambition. This feels more like a tech demo, proof of concept or student homework assignment rather than a fully fledged product designed for PC gamers. As such it doesn't offer any real value as a serious PC game. On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution (although you are in a fixed position in the game, I see that as a bit of a deficiency as it points to the simplicity and shallowness of the game), but at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. A number of other gamers have pointed out that the mic controls and audibility from the user side is often buggy or just doesn't work... I can't really blame the developer entirely for this because Windows audio controls are notoriously finnicky, but at the same time, the entire premise of the game relies on Windows audio technology for most gamers, again, a problem to be remarked upon. The low value of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 6 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this simple game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Midnight Evil has the ridiculous, laughable price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. For comparison, the $5 asking price for this game could get you games like "Mass Effect 3", "This War of Mine" or "Shadow Warrior". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
The game got a very cool idea but ya boy stutters, tho. I still love it. The thing that bugs me, three trophies: Completionist, Mole Whacker Those two trophies are bugged. (I finished the game about five times, the game doesn't even tell you that you unlocked the mole game.) I had all Data blocks and all trophies but STILL... No Competionist trophy. Side note: I had to replay random levels about 7 times until the last two blocks appeared since they're luck based. The 'Germinator Destruction Gold' trophy works but it was a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to get it since the pills are random and germs movement are random, as well, cu. (I you miss more than three shots, quit the run.) ((You can unlock the germ game by clicking the Otori poster at the beginning of level 5, 6, or 7 (I can't remember) since it zooms in on the dang thing at the end of one of these levels.)) Other than garbage trophies that made me spend wayyyyy too much time on this... issa solid game. Can't wait for the sequel.
I one of those players that likes full completion. I don't mind when there is a painful part in the game and will play for hours to get an achievement. The mole game.... The score seems random. One run i get 43 of them and get 4300 points no misses. The next i get 43 of them and get 300 points no misses. I don't know if its bugged or the Dev doesn't know but if there is something i'm missing it would be nice to know. Maybe i'm not supposed to hit a certain color etc. If so, simple rules would make this way more enjoyable. I'm extremely frustrated because the reading part is fantastic but that's not all the game offers, and i would like to complete the rest.
Midnight Evil is a fun horror game that can make use of a very interesting concept--using the microphone to control the game. The premise of the game is to read a book and check your surroundings for monsters, as the book is supposed to dispose of these monsters. While it is possible to make it so voices read the book to you, reading the book with your own voice into your microphone is also an option. My friend and I used the microphone to read the book and had a blast playing the game!
