11/10. Its time to make my fantasy reality
My following thoughts are a ramble, not a rehearsed lecture. Alas, I hope this review provides some insight into the game. While I did love and enjoy Metaphor: ReFantazio as a story *and* game [it is critical to understand the underlying difference between the game and the story], the end game feel lobsided in its absurd ramp-up in how quickly you will scale in power with an unlocked set of abilities at the apex of the journey's end. Furthermore, elements of fantasy racism and discrimination can feel one-dimensional or flat at times, but not so egregious that it undermines the subject as a whole. Despite these two primary critiques I have for part of the story and the game, the SMT Press Turn System makes for a more enjoyable experience during combat in my opinion compared to the Persona series *after the One More Turn System* which was founded in *Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3* [of which includes Synthesis Skills akin to Fusion Spells from *Persona 2: Innocent Sin*, three stage debuffs/buffs for ATK, DEF, and AGI/ACC, et cetera]. Metaphor's soundtrack and voice acting [EN/JP] is incredibly memorable in how it is presented and executed, only supplemented by the outstandingly stylized yet intuitive UI/UX design of Metaphor. Overall, understand that Metaphor is not so fundamentally flawed to leave it as a failure nor it is such a revolutionary creation by ATLUS--just as how the Persona Games can fall short with its execution of tropes [though in subjectivity for the individual--there is no "objective" when it comes to more non-standardized elements of story telling] and its primary setting for the protagonists starting with *Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3*, you will see classical fantasy tropes that have long since plagued or blessed the genre as a whole by many words of critique and opinion. Despite the inclusion of the tropes, the overall plot is not by any means generic nor a predictable story by flaw of its writing and not its execution of leaving bread crumbs to allow for the player to come to a conclusion. I found myself lollygagged at the twists and turns Metaphor: ReFantazio that do not feel contrived nor diminish previous story elements [such as the primary plot twist regarding Kara in Quantum Dream's *Detroit: Become Human* diminishing the overall narrative of the story and what the relationship between Kara and this character were attempting to explore]. They perfectly recontextualize the game as a whole without being self-contradictory or being obtuse to comprehend. All-in-all, I would recommend this game as a lovely story that is neither mediocre nor a masterpiece, but simply as a well-developed and released game.
Definitely one of THE best modern jrpgs to date, 8.5/10
10/10 No Notes
Metaphor: ReFantazio is easily one of the best games I’ve played. The story is beautifully written from start to finish. Hoping there's a sequel down the line!
probably my favorite game of all time
