Metaphor: Refantazio is one of the best atlus games I’ve ever played, I only originally picked it up because I thought it would be similar to persona 5 but I ended up liking it multitudes times more Unlike the persona series it feels like you actually have to plan out your combat The archetype system feels so much better then fusing personas since it allows you to develop in the way you like instead of fusing two personas and getting a persona that has completely different abilities (except the ones you can inherit from the two you made tk fuse it) Developing bonds feels a lot more fun since you don’t have to worry about getting the “correct” awnser and missing out on time slots since you screwed up a dialogue The characters have a lot better designs too (in my opinion than in persona) The only issues I have is Once you get to the late game it can become a bit easy with all the recources you get to give yourself extra turns, which in some combats can feel necessary And also I feel like a lot more of the game could’ve had voice acting since in the only bonds there are voice acting is in the final rank of the bond I have a lot more to say about the game but this is all I feel like writing :p
While some parts of the worldbuilding are interesting. The character, the interactions, and the events that take place as just so lacking and written so poorly that it's hard to recommend this game.
peak.
A good enough Atlus RPG, but too close to Persona for its own good Metaphor ReFantazio as the first full-fledged RPG from Atlus sub-studio Studio Zero feels a bit too safe. Every other RPG series has either stood on its own from the beginning, or been honest about being a sub-series (looking at early Persona). An Etrian Odyssey, Persona and SMT game stripped of any sort of setting or unique style would still feel drastically different from each other. Do the same to Metaphor, and it would feel like a "social-link/calendar" era Persona game with some things altered. What sets it apart from persona also doesn't feel interesting either. Instead of the protagonist being a blank slate, and all other party-members having obvious strengths, weaknesses and elemental associations, everyone gets to be a blank slate that can more or less assume any role with at least fair proficiency, doubly so since you can swap around some skills you've learned with other classes (here called archetypes). More than ever can you just pick your favourites and let the other party members sit out the entire game. The calendar and social aspects are also mostly for the worse. Fewer interactions and fewer bonds makes the cast feel very small and underexplored, and the lack of things to do in the calendar system makes the daily grind rather uninteresting. The setting similarly feels unrealised. For how invested we are supposed to be in the world, we get really little of it (even if that was on purpose). Atlus isn't that good at creating a larger world, their RPGs usually excel at smaller-scale settings and when they are free to go through something written by Jung or Crowley nicking names and vague outlines of concepts, so I can't be that annoyed when their first attempt at a fantasy world bigger than a few menus doesn't hold up, but I also can't just say that it's fine. THAT BEING SAID, it's still a fairly good Atlus RPG, which puts it high on the totem pole of JRPGs. Another interesting wrinkle to this is that long-time director of the Persona series Katsura Hashino, who went on to be the director of Metaphor, stated that he went on to create Studio Zero "due to a shift in creative direction with Persona 5", so maybe we'll in ten years time look back at Metaphor with more appreciation, as this was the continuation of that style of game, whereas Persona goes on to do something else.
