Fun, not-actually-hentai satire game. The humor and writing for this game are my style. Note for the Dev: The cat girl harem concept makes the game sound like it could be an adult, hentai game rather than satire. The store page should be more explicit about what to expect. That should make people on either side of the divide happier.
I wanted to try and look past this game's faults and just couldn't. The character art is solid, but you get to see it so rarely. As near as I can tell, there's no way to view the art for the catgirls you've recruited after having recruited them. You have a status screen where you can set them to be the girl(s) you summon for assistance in the methods they can provide it, but you don't see their character art on that screen, only their sprite. Even as a game with no nudity or H scenes, being able to view the character art is something your player wants to be able to do, especially in a game about collecting (cat)girls for your harem. The movement and combat are some of the jankiest by far of any game that I've ever played. You cannot swing your weapon in the first few frames of jumping and swings are singular entities, not part of any combo attack if you're repeatedly pressing the attack button. I'm okay with that second note, as it lends a feeling of weight and commitment to the attack, but even early enemies take 5-10 attacks to kill and, at just over one attack per second, it was more worth my time to just avoid them, ignoring whatever resource they awarded on kill. There are a lot of "gotcha!" moments in the platforming as well that feel at home in a "I Wanna Be the Guy" clone that don't feel organic to discover and avoid at all in this game. Finally, the translation is terrible. For a game so heavy on dialog, the developer(s) should have enlisted the assistance of a native English speaker for the translation as some conversations in the first couple of hours are nonsensical. Character names are inconsistent even in the same dialog box, with a character named "VolT" referring to herself in one sentence as "VolT" and the next as "Volti". This happens with other characters as well. I came into this expecting something akin to Thousand Arms but as a Metroidvania. This is not that and, while I can appreciate what they were going for, it needs more work before I can consider it a good buy even on sale.
The game opens with a defeated developer reflecting on his previous title—one that garnered little attention and even fewer reviews. It’s a personal moment, because it mirrors the real-life experience of the creator. But instead of going back to improve the failed project, the dev spirals into a fantasy filled with magic, crystals, and, of course, catgirls. What starts as a daydream quickly becomes something more when a glowing portal appears in his room, sucking him into the world of his own imagination. In this strange new land, God gives you a mission: destroy special crystals to stop a dragon that’s been draining mana from the world. Each crystal is heavily protected or requires a new ability to access. But you won’t be doing this for nothing because you get a single wish. Naturally, you waste it on a harem of magical catgirls. But nothing comes easy because you must explore the world, meet these catgirls, and, crucially, ask for their permission to join your team. The dialogue leans hard into humor, with choices that actually matter. Many of the catgirls are completely optional, and if you miss the chance to recruit one, there’s no second opportunity—at least as far as I know. I ran into several that offered to join, but after choosing the wrong response, they stopped talking to me. However, you still won’t be alone because a few join as you progress thought the game. Catgirls serve as summonable companions with distinct abilities. You assign them to slots: starting with two, later upgradable to four. Pressing the summon button teleports all active catgirls to your side. They’ll follow you and boost you with unique perks. For example, one boosts your movement speed while another shoots arrows at enemies. Though they have health bars and can die temporarily, they come back quickly after a cooldown or instantly upon transitioning between screens. You can explore the world in both directions from the starting point. Controls are limited to jump, attack, and left and right. The game world is divided into discrete screens of varying size, populated with platforms, pitfalls, and roaming enemies. There are light metroidvania elements: defeating bosses unlocks new powers, and you’ll find treasure chests with money and crystals, collectible coins, and even destructible hidden walls. The game includes one collectible type, special coins, which lead to unlocking a free catgirl. There’s also a side quest involving lost items scattered across the map. It’s supposed to reward you with a damage-boosting hat, but it’s currently bugged: it finished before I gathered all items and gave me a hat that boosts damage. If you die, the hat vanishes and the quest giver stops responding. Coins are used to buy upgrades at shops and from a map merchant. The map starts extremely basic, filling in as you explore. You can buy upgrades to improve it, such as marking important spots and catgirls, but money is slow to come by. Crystals, on the other hand, are spent at pedestals that grant increased running speed or extra hearts. In many ways, the gameplay mirrors the developer’s earlier work. Enemies follow simple patterns. They move in straight lines until they hit something, then turn around or keep charging. Most just try to deal contact damage, which is frustrating due to your short attack range and the low knockback. Combat feels fast and unforgiving, but often skippable since enemies only drop mana. Mana is used to fuel the fast travel system, which is both helpful and annoyingly costly. You need to discover a portal first, and then pay a high price every time you want to teleport. If you’re low on mana or don’t want to waste it, backtracking becomes unavoidable. Enemy behavior depends on their abilities, some can jump, others can fly, and they can be killed by some environmental threats. This unpredictability makes them feel wild at times, as you can’t always anticipate their next move or whether they’ll perform some erratic action. Most of the danger, however, comes from the environment itself. Take water, for instance: while you can enter it, you’ll start taking damage within a few seconds. There’s no visual indicator, so you just have to guess how long you’ve got. Then there are fish that launch out of water with no warning, and the game’s worst offender, platforms with hidden spikes. These look like normal floating platforms until you land on them, at which point they reveal their deadly trap. Each hit removes one of your three starting hearts, and falling into a pit respawns you nearby. You can sometimes cut bushes for health, but often it’s quicker to let yourself die and come back with full hearts. In fact, dying comes with no consequences. You keep all your collected items, coins, and progress, and respawn exactly where you entered the current screen. This forgiving system offsets some of the more frustrating elements and even invites risk-taking, knowing you won’t lose much in the process. Surprisingly, bosses are not that difficult. The knight, the first boss, might seem like you’re going to have a lot of trouble, but that’s only because you have to fight it without any real abilities. Bosses might show up unexpectedly by exploring a normal-looking screen, but the game saves a few steps before the fight. In conclusion, like many games with metroidvania elements, they manage to fix some of design shortcomings with new abilities. First you’ll find the double-jump, then dash that also lets you squeeze through narrow spaces, and finally a wall-jump that lets you climb up any straight wall. Despite its flaws, some bugs, janky AI, and a few balance issues, the game has charm. It’s a passion project with a lot of self-awareness, humor, and a quirky mechanic involving catgirl recruitment that’s more engaging than it has any right to be. If you’re into oddball indie games, light exploration, and don’t mind a bit of jank for the sake of creativity, this one’s worth a look.
The year is 2025, players are overwhelmed by a glut of video games in practically every genre, and this doubly goes for the 2D Metroidvania genre. So what does Meowphoria offer that many of its competitors do not? Yes, that's correct. Catgirls. As one of a handful of games within the catgirl genre, you, the one reading this review, can consider yourself an investor in the potential of the catgirl genre. We've all seen advertisements asking us to donate to starving children in Africa, and many emphatic, bleeding hearts find themselves compelled to part with their hard-earned slave wages to ultimately fail to feed African children—and fail to teach starving African parents how to maintain the technology necessary to feed their starving children. However, consider the following: the developer is a starving Eastern European catgirl lover. By parting with your hard-earned wages, you'll receive approximately 4 hours of game featuring at least a dozen cute catgirls and later tuck yourself into bed and enter dreamland with feel-good feelings of having fed a starving developer of Eastern European descent. When has a starving African child—or any of these other human aid programmes—given you a catgirl in return for your generosity? Cuteness is Justice!

「♥Meowphoria♥」

catgirls <33 mrrrp ~
