Mechanines Tower Defense is a roguelite tower defense game.
Tower Defense
There are no towers. There are dogs—five of them. In the beginning, you start out with one dog (you have to unlock the others). Place your dog(s), start a wave, and see how far you can go 'till the mechs destroy your house. You can also upgrade each dog. There are two different paths to upgrade a dog. You can't get both, so keep that in mind. After you decide which upgrade path to go, you can get two more upgrades (some upgrades have to be unlocked in the overall progression first). After some waves you can get cards. It's basically a small bonus for your dog. Each dog can hold up to six cards. Aside from that, you can expand the map for Evofood which is the same recource you need to buy and upgrade dogs.
Meta Progression
After a run, you get gold based on your score. With gold, you can unlock and upgrade dogs, abilities, bonuses, and cards. On the first look, there isn't that much to unlock/upgrade but you'll notice it still takes a few hours. If you got the same thought at first, this is probably due to being "spoiled" because of online service games with season passes and whatnot to unlock all kinds of stuff and put hundreds of hours into.
Difficulty
Each wave gets harder. Couple that with more lanes when expanding the map and you'll have a hard time. You can also choose to start a map with just one or up to four lanes, giving you more gold in the end but also giving you a harder time in the beginning.
Pros and Cons
+ tower defense is fun. It's a well proved genre and Mechanines doesn't do anything wrong here. + it's engaging thanks to the meta progression, giving you new stuff to play with and strategies to try out. + Highscores. There are leaderboards and you can immediately see your score when selecting the map. + The aesthetics are beautiful. + The devs seem to care. I got early access a few days before release and already noticed small changes they implemented which I liked and allowed for an overall better experience. - more dogs? "While each dog plays differently and upgrade paths let you change the playstyle of a dog a bit, it's still just five and seems a bit low compared to other TD games." - That's what I first thought but after playing some more, I really wasn't in need of more dogs. They allow for different strategies already and the nature of the game wouldn't fit with 20+ dogs imo.
Conclusion
Mechanines Tower Defense is a fun little roguelite with engaging meta-progression and dogs with completely different playstyles. Each run is different thanks to procedurally generated maps but still comparable thanks to a high score system which can awaken the inner demon to get a higher one than your friends, or complete strangers from the internet. If you're into tower defense games without a story or campaign, this will definitely be for you!
Mechanines. Mechanised canines, you see? Yes, this tower defence game uses adorbs doggos as the units, 5 different breeds of goodboys with different attributes that, as you would expect, you earn access to through play. It's a good tower defence game. Not great, in and of itself, but very decent. 16-bit graphics style is nicely designed and very suitable, good sound, UI works really well. But what tips this over into the 'really good' category is the rogue-lite structure. Rogue-lite, ugh! A horrible term, misused and inaccurate too. The last 2 years have been FULL of rogue-lites, in every genre, some great and some awful amiright? But here, the idea that a loss provides you perks you can use to progress further in your next run really adds to the game. It adds to the tactical planning and mental effort lost by having fixed unit positions which I would normally dislike in a TD. Each run can be short or long (up to about an hour for a 'normal' gamer) depending on how many paths to your base you allow. Each new run is a different map, presumably proc-gen with different branches that unlock like new pieces in a jigsaw puzzle, creating a larger and more sprawling map for you to apply your strategic chops to as your run progresses. As you would expect, the robot baddies get tougher at a perfectly balanced rate for your improved defences as you go, although being a rogue-lite you know you will be overcome eventually. There is no win state, only a how-long-can-I-hold-out state. The better you do the more skill points you earn to bolster your armoury before your next run. While some rogue-lites seem built to rob you of your time, I never felt compelled to play another round cos the dev said I must, only 'cos I wanted to. There are some really clever tricks employed to make this feel genuinely tactical and in the player's hands. I love that your stock of points to improve your next round can be sacrificed in your current round instead, to fix that broken asset slot that might profitably extend your current run. I REALLY love that you can reset how you've allocated all your progression perks and rebuild your priorities in a different way between runs. Really clever game design IMO. There's plenty of other little touches that make this game really work. So in summary I rate this game very highly even though 'rogue-lite TD' might initially sound a bit generic and cheap. A lot of work has clearly gone into this game and though I guess it won't be for everyone, I also think it might be a very pleasant surprise for some. Good stuff. I post this review after about 8 hours of play, but will definitely play quite a bit more I think. Do I need to say again that it's full of doggos and robots?
Really well put together - lots of polish at launch. Nice music & UI design/aesthetic. Very easy to get into/understand. Online leaderboards is a nice touch. Infinitely-expanding map is definitely interesting.
Adorei o jogo!
Gameplay "grindy".
O jogo está incrível!! Simplesmente impecável!! Não consigo parar de jogar he he!!
Recomendo MUITO!
