TLDR; This port is just a sliver of the original, get it on GOG instead if you want the full experience.*
After trying to find this game for years, I finally found it, and I was super excited! I played this as a very young child, and I have very fond memories of it. I honestly just wanted that quick rush of nostalgia, so when I saw it was on sale for $0.79 here compared to the full $3.99 on GOG, it seemed like a no-brainer to get it here instead. And, well, I kinda wish I had just dished out the extra money now, to be honest. I saw the reviews were mostly negative, and I really should have paid more attention to that. "It can't be that bad, right?" It's... Pretty bad. I have over 9 hours as of writing this but that's only because I left it running while I slept because I couldn't figure out how to save manually in this version (there could be a way to and I'm just dumb, I honestly don't know) and I had restarted the game once because I thought I'd hit a bug that softlocked the game... But we'll get to that. I'd say, without all that, it only took me 5 hours to beat the game. I feel like it would have taken me longer, had I not played a version that cut out most of the puzzles and any sense of challenge in the game. As other reviews warn, this isn't the original game. This is a dumbed-down port that's not only aggravatingly easy, but also removes a lot of the charm of the game. The cut out puzzles present a big problem when the game doesn't even acknowledge they're no longer implemented and still gives hints and dialogue that suggest otherwise. This caused way more confusion than necessary, honestly. In the Mayan section of the game, there was this super confusing math puzzle that I dreaded doing, but was ready to tackle regardless. I go to pick up a piece, and... it puts it down somewhere I didn't want it. I was beyond confused and frustrated, I couldn't interact with the puzzle anymore, and the guy blocking the doorway wouldn't say or do anything. I figured, "Well, ♥♥♥♥, I guess I blocked my progress for now." So, I made a new game, started with Ireland that time, and just played the game from there with relatively no issues. (I noticed a few puzzles being missing, but for the most part, Ireland was the least problematic with this issue imho) I got back to where I had gotten stuck before, and got the same result from the puzzle. My partner discovered that the only way he could get the guy to react and let him through was if he alt-tabbed out of the game, so I tried the same, and it worked, somehow. That weird glitch aside, that's when I realized that the game took any kind of thought out of the puzzle, the markings on the wall teaching you how to do it and the guy's hint meant absolutely nothing. There were several more moments like this, where you anticipate having to go all big brain only for the game to either dumb it down immensely or completely remove the puzzle altogether. It doesn't make sense for the Bat God to still tell me I have to assemble the Rainbow Bridge to progress when the puzzle doesn't even exist in this version. I could go on about this gripe, but the point is, it's more trouble than it's worth. There are other problems, like dialogue animations and cutscenes being gone, and this version being so blurry it's an eyesore sometimes. Even so, I still enjoyed exploring familiar worlds that I'd had a vague memory of for years, the music was beautiful, and the overall sense of nostalgia made it worth 79 cents, but I still wish I had just spent a lil more and gotten it on GOG since they actually have the full game. I would not recommend getting this version unless it's on sale and you want a hit of nostalgia or you wanna play on easy mode, but in my opinion, it might just be worth it to dish out the extra money to get it on GOG instead. *If you're on mac, I think that the GOG version is the same as this version, unfortunately.
A "classic" point 'n click adventure game. Sadly, in the Steam version , the puzzles are too often solved for you, making the game just a travelogue through the decent graphics, storyline and music for the time (2000). Get the original CDs if you want the correct game. I have those and still enjoy the gameplay every once in a while.
Atlantis 2: Beyond Atlantis is an ancient game from 1999. It's a whopping 24 years old at the time of this review. The game runs in DOSBOX and lacks proper widescreen aspect ratio support (it's locked at 4:3) or support for any modern gaming display resolutions, hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge. It also got ported to iPhone, where, on the Apple app store, it also went down as well as bacon at a bah mitzvah. It wasn't considered a great game in 1999, it's not a great game now that it's a free mobile app. Also, while this is free on app stores, they still want you to pay money, because they hate PC gamers. Nice attitude. This is a basic point-and-click puzzle adventure game, ripping off Myst and other games, but not nearly as well. You negotiate basic 360 degree static images with your mouse and click on stuff. To be honest that might even be okay if the visuals were good (and not 24 years old) and the gameplay was compelling... and it's not. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no options to change the resolution for the game or customise the graphics settings. There's no way for gamers to ensure this is running at the native resolution of their displays... there's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. There's no way for gamers to try improve the low quality graphics. The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just point and click stuff like a browser/Flash game. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 5 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Once more we see greedy devs trying to scam PC gamers. On Steam, this is $4 USD, on app stores, it's free. Devs must learn PC gamers are not here to be gouged, and can't be expected to pay a premium for a free mobile app just because it's also on Steam. This is unacceptable disrespect for PC gamers. Because this can be played free elsewhere, and because of the other defects, it's impossible to recommend. Who do they think we are?
I remember playing this game when it was only a computer PC game with a 4 disc step up. My grandfather has given me this & Chapter 2 of this game & after playing them, I love it. The story was very supernatural like, full of puzzles, challenges, maybe old-school graphics, but it was fun & enjoyable. I suggest to please give this game a try before you deny it. & if you have played this game, I also suggest to try & find the 2nd game of "Beyond Atlantis" & play it whenever you can. I can promise you, it's a cool game, so what if what I said about it being "old school', believe me, it's worth it
For an older game, this is so fun and so much adventure. I wish they would create a newer version of this game.
I spent 0.89$ on this because it was on sale and it was still not worth that much money
vägen till gud
