This game, which ran great on a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ CARTRIDGE back in the day, runs like absolute ASS on my computer. Every game I tried ran as slow as molasses, the audio was choppy. Its not good. The gameplay video that plays in the game selection screen was playing at a higher framerate than when the game was actually running. I could NOT be more disappointed, as I was looking forward to playing maximum carnage and separation anxiety again. But Pass on this one. Garbage quality corporate port/cash grab.
Bought this game to be able to play X-Men arcade online. Thought the nostalgia trip would be worth it, but there are virtually no online lobbies and it appears there was little to no initial interest in the game. Patches are also needed and updates to make the others online. I'll change it to a recommend when things are fixed.
So this review is going to be formatted quite differently instead of just reviewing the collection I am going to talk about the collection a little bit but then review some of the games which will be x-men arcade, Captain America and the avengers, Spider-Man and Venom Maximum Carnage and Venom and Spider-Man Separation Anxiety. Let's begin The collection itself: I am shocked that this collection is actually reasonably priced at only twenty quid and I like that they didn't shy away from showing extras from some of the games and adding cheats which I tell you now for some of these games there's no shame in using them with how hard they are however the game selection they did go with is weird to me and it's not with what's included but rather what's missing, I understand you can't include something like Spider-Man the Arcade game, Spider-Man vs the Kingpin or X-men Mutant apocalypse as that would be a legal mess with Sega or Capcom although it would have been nice to have them but why isn't the Spider-Man animated series game here, why isn't the SNES port of Captain America and the Avengers here, why isn't the X-men NES game here, why isn't the Wolverine NES game here and why isn't Wolverine Adamantium rage here and honestly I could go on and on but I do hope we get a volume 2 of this collection so that some of the missing games can be added that would be cool. X-men Arcade: Before this collection I had never properly sit and played through X-men arcade but now that I have I see why everyone gushes over this game it's great looking Art Style, It's awesome music, It's smooth gameplay everything here is just incredibly fun without overstaying it's welcome, It's also interesting that the game is much more based on the Pryde of the X-men pilot rather than the actual show we all love as the costumes the characters wear and the characters that are here or are playable such as Dazzler being playable or Kitty Pryde being in the game, speaking of playable characters you have 6 characters to play as: Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Collossus, Dazzler and Nightcrawler as you go through 5 stages and 9 bosses: Pyro, The Blob, Emma Frost, Wendigo, Nimrod, Some statues, Juggernaut, Mystique disguised as Magneto and Magneto Himself Overall I really do recommend you play this. Captain America and the Avengers: Unlike X-men Arcade I actually have sat down and gone through Captain America and the Avengers before and just like then it's still a really fun game that makes me smile all the way through with it's varied and well-done gameplay and great soundtrack. You play as four characters: Captain America (Of Course), Iron man (My Favourite), Hawkeye and Vision (For some reason, why is he here?) as you go through 5 Stages with 13 bosses: Klaw, Living Laser, Whirlwind, Giant Robot (Which is blatantly a Sentinel), Grim Reaper, Wizard (Isn't he a fantastic Four villain, what's he doing here?), A giant robot octopus, Mandarin, Juggernaut (Why is he here!), Ultron, Crossbones, Red Skull and a Giant mech with red skulls head. During gameplay you can see cameos of other avengers members which either are power-ups or help traverse parts of a level and these are: Wonder Man, Quicksilver, Wasp and Namor Overall another game I recommend. Spider-Man Maximum Carnage: Now this is where I am now going to be a little more mixed as I think Maximum Carnage is a game with many positives and negatives. First, Let's start with the positives This game is an impressive adaptation of the Maximum Carnage storyline that was going on in a bunch of Spider-Man comics in the 90s and I don't know how but they made comic cutscenes that are so accurate to the original Comics that feel ripped from the books into the game which is amazingly impressive for a 16-bit game and makes the cutscenes really enjoyable to watch, The game also includes a really cool assist mechanic that allow other heroes to help you during the beatings of your enemies and every hero is someone that was in the storyline which includes: Captain America, Iron Fist, Cloak, Dagger, Deathlok, Black Cat, Morbius and Firestar. Lastly the soundtrack is really good to the point I sometimes listen to it outside of the game and when you learn who composed for the game then no wonder it's so good as the Band Greenjelly were the ones to compose the music and wow they went all out for this game with their music. Now it's time for the negatives, The games bosses are incredibly boring and this due to the game being so faithful to the books to an absolute fault in some aspects as the bosses will always either be generic people or Carnage and his gang of psychopaths which gets stale fast. Another flaw with the game is no Multiplayer and only having Two playable characters which are Spider-Man and after stage 2 Venom which creates a lack of replay value. The last criticism I have is this game is way too ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hard for it's own good to the point where I wouldn't blame you for using a infinite lives or continues cheat while playing this because some sections of the game are just insanely difficult for no good reason. Overall, Would I Recommended Maximum Carnage? Yes, but there's no shame in using cheats for this game in my opinion Spider-Man and Venom Separation Anxiety: A simple way to put Separation Anxiety is that it's Maximum Carnage but worse just like Maximum Carnage it's an adaption of a comic Story arc this time being the Separation anxiety storyline that was going in Venom's comics during the mid 90s and it's clearly showcasing it's self as a sequel to Maximum Carnage (The game) and for every one step forward Separation anxiety makes from Maximum Carnage it takes two steps back since if you bring up something positive for Separation Anxiety like the Secret rooms that encourage replaying the game and exploring the levels, The better boss variety with the 6 symbiotes: Riot, Phage, Lasher, Agony, Scream and Carnage along with the Jury with: Sentry (Not the one your thinking of), Ramshot, Screech, Bomblast, Firearm and Wysper or that you can choose between Spider-Man and Venom from the beginning and depending on who you play it will change the story a tiny bit again encouraging replaying the game there's many more negatives that keep it down from it's predecessor like the lack of variety from the returning assist system only having Captain America, Ghost Rider, DareDevil and Hawkeye (What is it with 90s Spider-Man beat em ups and having Hawkeye in them) or the lack of enemy variety since except the first level all you do is fight life foundation soldiers, The alright but not great music compared to the previous game, The annoying trap rooms that pad out the game for far too long, The difficulty which hasn't been adjusted and may actually be harder than Maximum Carnage since unlike Maximum Carnage your attacks will just not hit sometimes for some reason (Again, if you do play this I don't blame you for using cheats) or the Removal of the comic book cutscenes that were one of the best parts of Maximum Carnage and replacing it with basic and boring-ass text overall unlike the other games I covered I do not Recommended this game. (If do Review Arcades Revenge or Silver Surfer I will put in the comments) (Captain America and the Avengers was the Arcade Version Maximum Carnage was the SNES version Separation anxiety was the SNES version)
DO NOT BUY THIS!!! Audio clipping, gameplay slowdown, poor optimization. FF7 Remake plays better on my Steam Deck than this garbage… And now Steam won’t give me my money back after only 11 minutes of play! So mad!
X-Men: The Arcade Game (Arcade) X-Men: The Arcade Game (Arcade) I was able to see this game for the first time in the 90s in the capital in the city of Moscow at the largest railway station in Europe, the Kazansky station. The arcade machine was impressive, what else can you say, only the arcade machine monitor was truly huge and made an incredible impression, coupled with chic soundtrack in the game. Back in the nineties, Moscow was conquered by the popular Sega Megadrive 2 console and super hits from Sega even at that time seemed ridiculous compared to this beautiful game. What can I say, the ROM Board for the X-Men arcade machine was even larger than the board for the Sega Megadrive 2 console, and this speaks of a truly impressive game at that time. The plot of the game is simply magnificent impressive special effects in the game that amaze the imagination - there is still no such thing in any game in the world! Praise to Konami developers! The game turned out to be just unrealistically fantastically beautiful. High-precision playback from the original dump of the game! I recommend not only to all fans of the X-Men series, but also to all gamers!
I enjoy playing the games offline, but it seems the online for the arcade games is DOA. It's easily worth what I paid for it considering the content, but people wanting online may not be happy. I played through Avengers and XMEN 3 times from beginning to end. I hate to imagine how many quarters or tokens that would have cost me at an arcade.
Honestly not a terrible port of most of these Marvel titles, Big Maximum Carnage fan, and the 6 player online for X-Men Aecade is a very nice touch. 9/10
Okay, so I was pretty excited to try this. I had a good time with collections like Castlevania and TMNT, so I figured maybe I'd get the same with B-list/C-list old-school Marvel games... well... The Good: X-Men: The Arcade Game – This is dope! I had fun with this one. I beat it twice—once with Nightcrawler, once with Wolvie. It also supports up to six players. This is easily the best game in the collection; a fun, old-school beat 'em up. The Okay: Captain America and the Avengers – This is okay. No specials (at least in the arcade version) took away a bit, and the bad guys can be damn annoying. But overall, fun enough. Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage – Fun to relive this, especially having just read the event not long ago. It has some banger music and graphics, but beating up umbrella users and women who use their hair as weapons was not on my bingo card for Spidey to do. The Bad: Silver Surfer – BORING. Venom/Spidey: Separation Anxiety – A worse version of Maximum Carnage and cheaply made. Spider-Man and the X-Men – ♥♥♥♥ THIS GAME!!!! ONE OF THE WORST GAMES EVER!!!! So yeah, sadly this collection only has one legit good game, two okay, and the rest are garbo. It's probably worth 10 bucks, but nothing more. I can't recommend it at full price.
no online servers for multiplayer you can host but it takea while no official australian servers onlu usa and ey servers . wait til this game comes down on sale you can invite friends who have the game to play with via code price needs to be reduced to 10 dollars no online servers for multiplayers
Note: I only played Maximum Carnage I was an owner of the original Maximum Carnage and Separation Anxiety Games on the Super Nintendo. Appreciate them being ported to PC (with the cheats) to be able to make the experience a bit more approachable. Unfortunately Maximum Carnage doesn't really hold up all that well: Positives + Great port that feels responsive + Appreciate all the additional features like cheats, rewind, CRT filter, save anywhere Negative - Very little depth to the combat, you're going to find yourself mashing the same three button combo on square over and over again. - The levels have very little traversal, and they basically just recycle the same very limited number of enemies over and over again. - Even the bosses get recycled to the point where it doesn't feel special to defeat any of them since you have to face them multiple times each. I would in general so great job with the ports, I'm always happy to see SNES classics ported to PC, unfortunately I'd only recommend this one to those who played the originals and know they will like them.
