This game is alright. It's really nothing spectacular, although there are things I can praise. One of them definitely being the art style - probably the most well done thing in the entire game. I love it so much, the character portraits, sadly of which there are only a handful, look great and the background art while the game loads is insanely cute and full of detail. The other part of the game that's very well done is the soundtrack. It's pretty simple but it's honestly nothing that I wouldn't listen to from time to time just to leave it in the background. Plus, a certain YouTuber uses this game's soundtrack in their videos so those who know them will definitely be surprised where the song they use came from. The rest of the game is, well...alright. The game comes in two halves - first half being a fetch quest for various items which wasn't too remarkable and I can see it become a bit boring. But it's relaxing in a sort of way if you just want a chill experience. The game does provide plenty for you to do, with the Mushroom Quiz mini-game being my favorite one out of the whole bunch. Although this part of the game should take upwards of two hours to complete and it may sometimes be a little confusing, as the game doesn't do much in terms of directing the player on what they're supposed to do next, especially the bridge part. One thing I can knock the game for here is the pacing. It really goes by fast. It comes in 3+ stages, 3 of which are required to unlock the "main game". Stages 1 and 2 took me less than 30 minutes collectively to complete while stage 3 took me about an hour due to the game not telling me what I'm needed to do so I just ended up doing things like fishing and taking the Mushroom Quiz multiple times. The pacing is pretty bad although thankfully - it does improve later when the game decides what it wants to focus on. The main attraction of this game is the dungeon-crawler RPG in the second half. The battle mechanics are very simple. You have an attack, a block (which doubles as a parry) and an evade function. Parrying the enemy's attack (if at all possible) will result in them getting stunned and you can unleash a powerful attack known as an "Art". That's about as deep as the battle mechanics in the game go. While not terribly bad, they aren't very deep and it doesn't take very long to figure out how it works and it is pretty basic. A good introduction to the world of RPGs maybe as it doesn't require much from the player aside from timing for parrying but to those looking for something more should keep looking, as this won't be it. The dungeon crawler aspect of the game is kind of a mixed bag. It's really slow paced so don't go in expecting The Binding of Isaac levels of dungeon-crawling and it's really story-driven. What I do like is that you can continue exploring to find various tidbits about the game's underlying plot through locked doors and such if interested, but what I don't like is how restrictive it is if you want to explore everything. A floor can have 4 doors but only 1 or 2 keys, meaning you can't explore everything in a given floor. Other things I didn't enjoy were how scarce checkpoints are, not being allowed to move the camera around freely (not even zoom out for a better view of your surroundings) and random encounters being, well...random. What I mean by that is enemies will just randomly pop-in and aren't visible in the overworld like pretty much all modern RPGs do. It feels dated in its design by that sense. Of course, there are things I didn't enjoy. I think the 3D model quality in this game, and the graphics in general are pretty bad. As someone else stated in a different review - it just feels like someone's first ever Unity game. Models lack detail and are kinda blocky, textures are incredibly low-resolution - while that's fine when the game is mostly from a top-down perspective, it becomes distracting once the camera zooms in for a "cinematic cutscene". I also didn't like the fact this game doesn't allow you to have any sort of graphical customization, period. The ONLY thing you're able to do is set the resolution and even that's rather limiting considering there's a pre-determined range of resolutions hard-coded into the game. Obviously I mentioned the lack of camera controls in the RPG section but when in the main forest area, the camera doesn't really transition from one area to the next and instead just snaps around whenever you move to a new section. It's distracting, disorienting and it often makes you run into a wall as the game doesn't compensate in terms of controls whenever this happens. Overall, I'd say the game is worth it but only if you're looking for a fairly simple to grasp RPG if you're just starting out in the genre and only then would I recommend it during a sale. This game isn't really worth 8,19€ on its own as it doesn't have a lot going for it, but if it's on sale for 50% or more - definitely go for it. You might find something to like here.
REVIEW HAS NO SPOILERS This game is wonderful, it's cute and makes me chuckle. You play as a aspiring Apothecary collecting ingredients and making potions. The music in the game fits it perfectly and the character designs are very cute. Let's go over some basic review things PRICE / QUALITY This game is very much worth it at full price, I very much recommend. REQUIREMENTS ☐ potato PC ☑ minimum ☑ medium ☐ high end ☐ NASA computer The game is easy to run and is quite smooth. GRAPHICS ☐ wear glasses to protect your eyes ☐ bad ☐ OK ☑ good ☐ eye candy (low to medium) ☐ masterpiece (high and up) It's a very simplistic art style, but still very cute. STORY ☐ it doesnt have ☐ still better than Bad Rats ☐ Alright ☑ good ☐ fantastic The story is funny and enjoyable so far, good laugh. Summary of the review is that it's a recommend, worth playing.
* Game has been replaced by a newer version * The "enchanted forest" advertised in the trailer is a single, small zone. You can walk from one end to the other in 15 seconds * Freezes on exit, requiring game to be force closed through Task Manager * Missing standard Steam library assets (box art on library page)
Märchen Forest: Mylne and the Forest Gift is a JRPG game fully 3D-rendered made with Unity featuring very cute artwork, female protagonist, nice soundtrack, nice and intriguing plot. Playtime: 1~2 hours for act I and at least 8 hours or more for act II. About the game and the plot: The game design is good, resembles PSone or N64 games. This game was separated in Act I and Act II, however, they can be considered as different games. The Act I will be divided into 3 phases where you will control Mylne (MC) and gather alchemy ingredients for her grandpappy then improving her abilities to become a master apothecary; In each phase once completed, will end the game then you need start as NG+, in which will increase game difficulty and unlock more options. The game is VERY detailed, so be curious and check every single item, also talk with every NPC at least 3 times or more to gather information. In Act I have some mini-games to help your progress. Once you complete the phase 3, Act I will end and you can choose to keep playing the Act II or just end in Act I. In Act II will be different compared with Act I, in which will be a dungeon crawl game, where you need increase MC level to face strong foes. The battle system is dynamic, you will fight in 1 vs 1 and learn the enemy pattern before your action, otherwise can be an instant death. Also be careful with the dungeons, since has deadly traps, some hidden rooms, strong foes, and you can only save the game in the dungeon entrance. The Act I plot is funny, and Act II plot is a little cliché, however, exciting. This game really worths the price and very recommended for those that like 3D dungeon crawl JRPG with a cute artwork, partial voice acting. Lets be honest, this is a scam not a game, only around 4 hours worth of playtime with the rest of the story being in a DLC thats not even in english and the remake costs 4 times the price of this and thats when you include the discout for the owners of this version. Garbage developer and a scam not a game, not recomment this or anything released by this ♥♥♥♥♥♥ developer.
An indie game at this quality honestly surprises me. There are TWO episodes within the game, the first and the second being so different in terms of what you do it's almost like it's a separate genre. With the $15CAD dlc, I thought that I was going to have to buy the second episode but I was pleasantly surprised. Cute lowpoly graphics/characters, along with a puzzle dungeon on the second episode makes this game worth it at its price. Moreover, the quest line are more intuitive than direct, which gives it a better play experience IMO.

A very pleasant surprise! A full remake was announced on the VERY SAME DAY I picked this up on a complete whim - I'd LOVE to wholeheartedly recommend this, but if you're strapped for cash, either wait for that remake or pick this up on a very generous discount. This is a genre-hopping slice of life jrpg that rewrites its own rulebook every hour or so. It's so clearly made with a lot of love, the dialogue is charming and the gameplay kept me guessing. The best comparison I can come up with would be an imaginary middleground between Animal Crossing and an Atelier game, it's a relatively unchallenging jrpg with a lot of nifty ideas that could use a bit more time in the oven. If the developer is truly a person with a lot of love to give, it shows in this game, I'm looking forward to the remake so they can iron out the kinks.
You ever see a game, and you know you'll enjoy it before you even play it? For me, this was one of those games. Despite the N64-tier graphics on a 2018 title, and the character illustrations vaguely misaligned with my personal tastes, I found myself called to play this game, and I don't regret it. This is actually basically two games in one. The first game, Mylne and the Forest Gift, is basically a slice of life game, not unlike Animal Crossing. You do technically have the objective of gathering alchemy materials, but what you're really doing is meeting and interacting with the denizens of the forest. A smooth, relaxing start. The second game, Mylne and the Strange Cavern, is a roguelite dungeon crawler RPG. The simple, streamlined mechanics make the transition painless, and despite some difficulty pacing issues (particularly between Floors 2 and 3), the game mostly avoids being needlessly punishing. The story these games (mostly the second, where the most lore is revealed) tell is somewhat simple and cliche, but no less charming for it. Overall, the game does have its flaws, and it won't blow you away, but it was just the sort of experience I was craving.
